ACRONYMS & THEIR MEANINGS

Write the meaning of the following acronyms:


*LCD - Liquid Crystal Display. LCD’s are used to help produce images. The liquid crystals are
implanted into the display screen. They are usually used in TV’s and computer monitors.

*RAM - Random Access Memory. They super-fast and temporary data storage space that a
computer needs to access right now or in the next few moments.

*OCR - Optical Character Recognition. OCR technology is used to convert virtually any kind
of images containing written text (typed, handwritten or printed) into machine-readable text data.

*HDD - Hard disk drives. A hard drive stores all your digital data. E.g documents, pictures,
music, videos, programs. Hard drives can be both external and internal. Hard disk drives are
commonly used as the main storage device in a computer.

*MICR - Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. They are used to verify the originality of paper
documents, especially checks. It also has special ink which is sensitive to magnetic fields.

*LED - Light-Emitting Diode. Their main uses are to illuminate objects . This is because of
it’s compact size, low consumption of energy, extended lifetime, and flexibility in terms of use in
various applications.

*ROM - Read Only Memory. It is a storage medium that is used with computers and other
electronic devices. As the name indicates, data stored in ROM may only be read.

*CD - Compact Disk. They are portable storage mediums that can be used to record, store
and play back audio, video and other data in digital forms.

*DVD - Digital Versatile Disc. It is a type of optical media used for storing digital data. It is
the same size as a CD, but has a larger storage capacity. Some of them are formatted
specifically for video playback.

*OMR - Optical Mark Recognition. They help in the process of capturing human-marked data
from document forms such as surveys and tests. They are also input devices , it is a method of
entering data into a computer system.
