Question 1
Briefly explain what is meant by the terms ecology and ecosystems.

Answer:
Ecosystems are communities of living organisms in conjunction with the non-
living components of their environment; interacting as a system, whereas
ecology concerns the spatial and temporal patterns of the distribution and
abundance of organisms.

Question 2
Define the term ‘symbiotic relationships’.

Answer:
Symbiotic relationships are those of any type of a close and long term
biological interaction between two (2) different biological organisms.

Question 3
List the three (3) types of symbiotic relationships supporting with at
least two (2) pictures of each relationship.

Answer:
The three types of symbiotic relationships are:
*Mutualism
*Commensalism
*Parasitism
*Mutualism – a mutualistic relationship is one where two organisms of
different species work together; each benefitting from the relationship.

E.g.

*Commensalism – a type of relationship where one organism benefits while


the other is neither helped or harmed.

E.g.
*Parasitism – a relationship between two different organisms where one of
the organisms actually harms the other through the relationship; they live off
of the host animal.

Question 4
State what is a food chain and give two (2) examples (words or
pictures).

Answer:
A food chain is a system where a small animal is the food for a larger
animal, which in turn is the food for an even larger animal. However, a food
chain never begins with an animal, it always begins with a vegetative
organism.

State what is a food web and give two (2) examples.

Answer:
A food web is very similar to a food chain but it comprises of many food
chains. A food web is the natural interaction and graphical representation of
what eats is an ecological community.

Choose any two (2) words from the list and briefly explain or define.

Answer:
Predators – an organism that primarily obtains food by the killing and
consuming of other organisms.

Habitat – the natural home or environment of an animal, plant or other


organism.
