TIPS & TRICKS
Instead of being an ordered step-by-step manual,
this guide is packed with a handful of neat tricks
that will help you understand this unique brush
pack a little better and therefore, use it more
efficiently in your artwork.

So, feel free to go about its pages in any order you

prefer, I'm sure you'll gonna find a useful tip
wherever you look at.
NATURE MASTER USER’S GUIDE TIPS & TRICKS

TIP 1: THREE-COLORS NATURE GET LOOSE!

Despite its apparent difficulty, painting nature it's not that One useful advice when using

By using Nature Master brushes, you'd be able to tackle this more organic and aleatory
task with more ease than using regular painting brushes. By results, imagine you're

brush.

MORE EXAMPLES
On these examples we are using only one brush at a time, to
show you their unique versatility; however, the more brushes
you add to the equation following this same formula, the more
natural your illustration/painting will look.

TIP 2: SHAPES GO FIRST Brush: FTOON - Bush Maker A

If you aren't sure about your overall composition, you should

begin working with solid shapes to define visual weights and
overall balance. For this task you can use the blocking brush
that comes with the pack.

Then you may want to use the same brush in Eraser mode on
certain areas to add some grooves to your main shape and take
away the bulky look.

In FIG.1 you can see how I used FTOON - Blocker A to sketch a

simple tropical forest bush. Doing it this way can be very useful
when planning out larger scenes, where you need to concentrate
on the big picture first and then, add life and a natural feel with
your Nature Master brushes FIG.2.

TIP 3: ‘PAINTING’ BY UNDOING

Nature Master brushes will bring certain randomness to your paintings; because nature behaves, well, very random. This behavior is
way cool because you’ll be running into lots of happy accidents when using the pack. But certainly, not every accident is a happy one.

When I'm sketching my trees, foliages, bushes, stones, grounds, grass fields, etc.; I find myself using my non-drawing hand tapping
with two fingers (UNDO gesture) all the time, as if it was another illustration tool. Finding that perfect shape can be just a matter of
undoing and redrawing. Let's see some examples.

1 2 3

I made a quick silhouette using the brush FTOON - Rainforest A and a dark green tone. Then, I used a lighter green to add volume. I
didn't like how the first attempt looked (Fig.1), so I undone that and tried again. Although the result is different (Fig.2), I was going
after a more 'scattered' look, so I undone that once more and did the same zig-zag motion a third time and, at last, (Fig.3) is exactly
what I was looking for.

This tip might seem quite obvious, but the truth is that not everyone sees Undo as an experimentation tool. Since not every stroke
will look the same when using this pack, your possibilities with just a single brush are plenty.
NATURE MASTER USER’S GUIDE TIPS & TRICKS

TIP 4: USE BRUSHES DYNAMICS

You can get the most out of each brush applying different
pressure and velocity while painting.

Notice how different results came up, applying the same I strongly recommend you to try several directions on each
painting direction for every stroke, but varying pressure and brush, to find different patterns. Brush used above: FTOON -

TIP 5: CREATING FIRE

Nature Master contains a handful of specialized brushes, which
have been designed to be used together to recreate more
believable natural elements. Let’s start by having a look at FIRE
BRUSHES.

Select any of the fire brushes located in the second pack ‘Nature
B’ and draw some strokes from top to bottom in a wavy manner.
If you pick up a regular orange color, the light of the brush will
build up itself as you create new strokes.

TIP 6: MIXING FIRE

Pick an orange color and use the brush FTOON - Fire Shaper to
lay down the primary structure (FIG.1), then, use FTOON -
Organic Flame A to shape its contours even further (Fig.2).

You don't have to worry about changing colors; whenever you lift

Add the final touches using

Experiment with all these brushes in any order you like, to come
up with different results each time. Try other colors to create

TIP 7: ROCKS
Rocks can be a beautiful part of your composition. We've
included some rock textures in our pack; however, these brushes
aren't meant to be used to fill-in shapes, but to add a realistic
texture to solid shapes.

Using either Lasso Selection or the included FTOON -

Blocker A brush, create the base shapes of your rocks.
Think about variety and contrast when doing so.

Then, you can use these shapes as Clipping

Masks to paint inside them.

Pick a light source and use the brushes

FTOON - Cliff Rock and FTOON - Rocky B in
combination, to define shading and details.
Change brushe size and pressure as you
paint, to add extra variety and more
dynamic results.

FTOON - Rocky A is also a very useful brush for painting extra details and highlights. Complement your rocks's surroundings using a
couple of grass brushes such as FTOON - Wild Grass, FTOON - Straight Grass, FTOON - Wheat. Another nice set of brushes you can
use on top of your rocks to create mossy surfaces are: FTOON - Moss A, FTOON - Moss B and FTOON - Fine Moss, located in
‘FTOON - Nature A’ pack.

realism to grass, rocks and natural surfaces in general. These are
their suggested uses, but you can experiment and apply them on
everything you may think of. These are SOME suggestions:

the lights and shadows. As I said before, it's easier when you see
it like a solid object. Then I used the same brush with the Eraser

TIP 13: CLOUDS

Painting good clouds is probably one of the holy grails of environment design. Despite of their undefinable shape, clouds are kind of
difficult to pull out correctly.

TIP 18: DESIGNING GROUND

Ground is something shouldn't be overlooked when designing
backgrounds and environment paintings. Ground can add a lot
of depth to your scenes. This pack includes 6 specific brushes for
non-grass based ground design:

FTOON - Ground Base FTOON - Ground A

FTOON - Ground B FTOON - Ground C

Like other natural elements, the way you mix these ground
brushes will give a different personality to each type of
environment you're creating. I love to add a handful of weeds
and grass all over to enhance my grounds realism.

TIP 20: WARP

Coming up with ideas for painting organic and natural shapes, is no easy task at all. Luckily
enough, we have plenty of tools within Procreate that won’t let us running out of ideas. One
trick I use all the time to create tree tops, is to paint a semi-squared shape, just worrying about
lights and shadows. Then I use the Warp function to play around with different shapes.

To avoid messing up my original shape, I duplicate it before

warping it. This way I can create many varitations and put them
together to see what works best.
