Lesson Title: 4.1 Square and Cube Roots Lesson # 1 Date: 2023-01-05
Grade(s)
Name: Jacob Proctor Subject: FPC 10 : 10

Rationale:
Exponents have been used to help model and solve problems since the time of the Babylonians. Einstein -
“the most powerful force in the universe is compound interest”. Today, we use exponents to solve
problems that range from calculating interest earned, to estimating how algae and viruses grow. It is a
great idea to build students' understanding and confidence in these functions and operations.

Core Competencies:
Communication Thinking Personal & Social
Communicate and collaborate Critically and creatively Acknowledging and listening
with classmates to solve approach problems and to others solutions and ideas
problems and gain understanding thinking tasks
through various lens Contributing one's own ideas
Reflective thinking on others and solutions
solutions and methods to
solving problems Recognizing positive peer
contributions as well as
personal contributions

Big Ideas (Understand)

- I can solve problems involving square roots and cube roots
- I can solve the square root of a perfect square and the cube root of a perfect cubes and explain the
process

Instructional Objectives & Assessment

Instructional Objectives (students will be able to…) Assessment
● Students will be able to relate square roots and ● Formative - as learning - exit ticket
cube roots to previous concepts and other 1. Solve the following ?
topics such as area, volume, exponents, 2. Explain/demonstrate how prime
multiplication factors can be used to identify
perfect cube/perfect root
● Students will be able to solve problems
involving square roots and cube roots
● Students will be able to demonstrate the
relationships between prime factors and
perfect squares/cubes

Prerequisite Concepts and Skills:

Gr.9 - exponents and exponent laws with whole-number exponents
Gr.8 - perfect squares and cubes, square and cube roots

Indigenous Connections/ First Peoples Principles of Learning:

First Peoples Principles of Learning:
- Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential and relational – honor
traditional lands - land acknowledgement - talking about what it means to me
- Learning requires the exploration of one’s identity - sharing more about my personal journey
- Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story - sharing my story of my path to teaching
- Oral discussion, hands on doing, listening to others - this thinking style of class is revolved
around discussion, hands on learning, and listening and exchanging thoughts with others

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Outline structure of the class to students at the beginning. Outline the unit plan and remind them each lesson
where they are on the unit. Outline what success looks like at the end of the unit and each lesson.

- Vertical whiteboard work - collaborative group work, hands on, kinesthetic, visual-spatial,
intrapersonal
- One on one quick conversations - Interpersonal
- Class discussions - interpersonal
- Group puzzle work - interpersonal, logical/mathematical
-

Differentiate Instruction (DI):

- Printed out worksheets with fill in the blanks
- Hands on thinking tasks
- opportunities to show or tell individuals learning
- reduce noise levels when arising
- Working with partners

Materials and Resources

Unit workbooks (x26), Designing a New School activity sheet (*9), White board markers (x15), Projector,
Tablet

Introduction (anticipatory set – “HOOK”):
- Land Acknowledgment - Listen to story
- Intro story - a bit about myself - Go to Whiteboards and brainstorm
- The emperor's three questions what they believe the three answers
1.whens most important time are (10 mins)
2.whos most important person
3.what's most important thing to do
why I am such a big fan of bringing
indigenous connections to learning, a lot of
you are doing that today, its working
together..being generous to everyone.. and
creating a community which..

story solution and provide positive
feedback

(ii) Square Roots and Cube roots

- Present Square roots and Cube roots - share insights and understanding on (5mins)

related terms/understandings …. (hint at and cube roots
area from activity if stuck)
- Complete problems…
- Direct students to complete practice
(25mins)
problems in workbooks
- Work on assignment problems
- Present assignment to students

- Identify alternative ways to approach - attempt to understand other

particular problems strategies and share and strategies (10mins)

Organizational Strategies:
- Have today's class structure written on whiteboard.
- Have unit open on Kami for collaborative understanding

- Ensure all print outs ready to be distributed - (26x unit workbooks) (9x designing a new school
activity)
- Ensure timer is ready to prompt transitions through schedule

Proactive, Positive Classroom Learning Environment Strategies:

Welcoming each student as they walk in the class – building relations
Being a role model – not just for safety – but for listening, reacting, caring
Mindfulness exercises beginning of every class, randomized group work for collaboration and peer teaching
skills, frequent reflections on learning,
Frequent whiteboard / out of seat experiential learning activities

Extensions:
Solving the roots of larger perfect squares and perfect cubes using the logical method reviewed in the
closure (identify alternative ways to approach particular problems)

Reflections (if necessary, continue on separate sheet):

To be done after each class / laboratory by teacher.
1. What went well, what challenges were encountered, what adjustments should be made next time.
2. Inclusivity: was the class inclusive of all students? If not, why not?
