Basic Principles for Electric Machine Analysis
• The principle of electromechanical energy conversion is perhaps the
cornerstone of machine analysis .
• It allows us to establish an expression of electromagnetic torque in
terms of machine variables
• Other principle that must be established are
 the derivation of equivalent circuit representations of magnetically
coupled circuit
 the concept of a sinusoidally distributed winding
 The concept of a rotating air gap magnetomotive force (MMF)
 The derivation of winding inductances

Magnetically Coupled Circuits

 Magnetically Coupled electric Circuits are central to the

operation of transformers for the purpose of changing the
voltage and current levels and,
 In the case of electric machines, circuits in relative motion
are magnetically coupled for the purpose of transferring
energy between mechanical and electrical systems.
 It is important in a power transmission and conversion and
to establish the equations that describe their behavior and to
express these equations in a form convenient for analysis.

book understanding all the steps
 Energy Relationships
 Electromechanical systems are comprised of an electrical system, a
mechanical system and a means whereby the electrical and mechanical
systems can interact.
 Interaction can take place through any and all electromagnetic and
electrostatic fields that are common to both systems, and energy is
transferred from one system to the other as the result of this interaction.

 The energy distribution should be expressed as

 Where
 𝑊𝐸 − is the total energy supplied by the electric sourse.
 𝑊𝑀 −is the total energy supplied by the mechanical source
 𝑊𝑒 - the energy transferred to the coupling field by the electrical system.
 𝑊𝑚 - the energy transferred to the coupling field by the mechanical
system.
 𝑊𝑒𝐿 -the heat losses associated with the electrical system
 𝑊𝑚𝐿 -the heat losses associated with the mechanical system
 𝑊𝑒𝑆 -energy stored in the electric field.
 𝑊𝑚𝑆 - energy stored in the magnetic field.
