First Reading: Jonah 3:1-10

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a days walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. 8Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. 9Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. 10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. For the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

Psalm 130 (said antiphonally)

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice! 2O let your ears consider well: the voice of my supplication. 3 If you, Lord, should note what we do wrong: Who then, O Lord, could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with you: so that you shall be feared. 5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him: and in his word is my hope. 6 My soul looks for the Lord: more than watchmen for the morning, more, I say, than watchmen for the morning.
1

O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is ample redemption. 8 He will redeem Israel: from the multitude of their sins.

Second Reading: Romans 8:18-25

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
18 22We

know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. For the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

The Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke chapter ten, beginning at the thirty-eighth verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ 38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lords feet and listened to what he was saying. 40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself ? Tell her then to help me. 41But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

A note from our Treasurers: PC is very happy with the number of folk using direct debit for their weekly offering and encourage more parishioners to consider this method of giving. Pew Reflections for 18th Sunday after Pentecost We have dual citizenship our earthly-Australian citizenship and our heavenly citizenship. Many of us work so meticulously to fulfill the demands of our earthly citizenship we pay our water, electricity, pension and income tax bills timely and religiously. Today we are being reminded to be equally meticulous in our fulfilling the demands of our heavenly citizenship our offerings to the Church of God, prayer life, fellowship, service to God and humankind. Pray for exemplary Christian citizenship that shows reverent concern for the world we live in and the hope we hold for the world to come. Give thanks for the Anglican Church of Kenya, for Archbishop Eliud Wabukala, and for his clergy and people. Text: The Revd Vongai Mkaronda, Gender Co-ordinator for the Anglican Church of Papua New
Guinea Anglican Board of Mission, 2011

The Words and Wisdom of Archbishop Desmond Tutu: This is a moral universe, which means that, despite all the evidence that seems to be to the contrary, there is no way that evil and injustice and oppression and lies can have the last word..... that is what has upheld the morale of our people, to know that in the end good will prevail. In a situation where human life seems dirt cheap, with people killed as easily as one swats a y, we must proclaim that people matter and matter enormously.
