1 Introduction
The REA–JET marking system is a robust marking system that is also suitable for use under extreme
environmental conditions, such as dust, humidity, vibration, temperatures and aggressive media. The
patented REA printhead technology provides high system availability coupled with a low maintenance
requirement.
The extremely fast-working printheads guarantee outstanding print quality even at high production speeds.
The easy user operation in dialogue form is user-orientated and easy to learn. The individual programming of
the input terminal can be carried using simple script language.

The interfaces can be variably configured by the operator. The modular design of the overall system enables
the easy and quick replacement of system components during servicing.
This reduces the standstill times and costs considerably. The REA-JET has been developed for universal
use. The printheads and control unit are proof against water and dust (IP 65).
Due to its modular design, the REA-JET can be operated as a stand-alone unit or as an integrated system
component with computer connection to other systems.

1.2 Printing Examples


The print height depends on the type of printhead, and can be varied to produce all the print heights specified
for the printhead type.
For this purpose, the printhead must be turned in the clockwise direction (viewed from the connection socket
of the printhead) until the required print height is achieved.

The print height of a 7-nozzle printhead can be set between 3 - 27 mm.


The print height of a 16-nozzle printhead can be set between 3 - 67 mm.

Note: The maximum print height is always defined by the following distance: center of the 1st nozzle to
the center of the 7th (or 16th) nozzle. This value must be entered in the basic parameters. The
maximum print height is changed by the angled position of the printhead.

If the printhead is being used to print a font that does not make use of all the nozzles (e.g.: 5 x 5),
the above value of the maximum print height must still be entered correctly in the basic
parameters (and not the print height of the 5 x 5 font).

* In order to achieve the optimum result, the dot size and/or the ink pressure may
need to be adjusted.

1.3 Available Fonts


The fonts shown in the following print samples are available for printing with the REA-JET Marking
System.

For a clearer overview, the print samples are only shown in one print height. Every font can of course be
varied in height within certain limits.
Fonts that do not make use of all the nozzles (e.g.: 5 x 5) cannot of course be adjusted in size to the
maximum print height of a printhead.

Unless specified otherwise, the print samples have been printed using the following standard settings:
Multistroke 1, gap setting 2.

For the font 16 x 10, print samples are shown with different settings for the parameters “Multistroke” and
“Density”. These setting facilities can however also be applied to the other fonts.

3 Introduction to the ST200

The ST200 input terminal is used for the configuration of your REA Inkjet System, and to provide
you with a continuous overview of the settings and the currently assigned texts.

The ST200 input terminal works with the control unit, to which it is connected by a spiral cable.
One input terminal can be used to operate and configure several control units. Once the system has
been configured with the aid of the input terminal, the ST200 input terminal can be disconnected
from the control unit and stored in a safe place.

The ST200 input terminal can also be used as the central control unit in a network (RJ network,
optional).

The ST200 input terminal consists of an LCD display, a robust keypad which is resistant to
solvents, integrated in a compact, heavy-duty housing.

For the security of your system data (date, time, texts etc.), the ST200 is equipped with a
permanent memory, which will retain the data for several months even without an external power
supply connected.

The system offers the facility of formating and storing up to 99 different texts. This number can
also optionally be extended to 999 texts. There is also sufficient memory space available for
different text elements, time and date fields, shift texts, variables, logos, counters and single texts.
In addition to the standard equipment, there are also various accessory options, which are described
in this manual under the section “Accessories – ST200”.
All texts and basic parameters which you as the operator enter into the input terminal and configure
must also be sent to the control unit. This process is referred to as “assignment”. Assignment is
carried out via the menu or directly using the defined function keys.

The layout of this manual follows the menu items of the main menu of the ST200 as shown in the display.
The menu items are described below.

3.1 Notes on Different Representations Used in these Operating Instructions:

<Green text> Describes the keys on the keypad of the input terminal for calling up
menus, selecting options or entering control characters.

Underlined, red Referred to below as “hotkeys”. These enable rapid, direct access to a
letters menu item.

The arrow keys can be used to position the display pointer marked by
←↑↓→ the “>” or navigate to any required menu item, before confirming your
selection by pressing the <Return > key.

<Ctrl> / <Alt> In some menu items, additional menus are available, which are
displayed by pressing the <Ctrl> key or the <Alt> key. The menu items
displayed here can be selected by pressing the relevant hotkey.

The exclamation mark symbol is shown wherever special attention is


required, for example at places where pressing a certain key may save
or cancel the process currently being carried out.

At some points in these operating instructions, you will find so-called “quick navigation
instructions” shown in blue boxes. These are intended to help you perform more complex entry
procedures easily and directly from the main menu.

3.2 Notes on Data Security and System Availability

At this point we would like to draw special attention to the fact that, for purposes of
protecting your data, we recommend that you make use of the data back-up facility
in your system configuration (REA-JET server software module, see “Accessories
– ST200” in your manual). We cannot accept any liability for loss of data and
resulting production stoppages.
In the course of using the REA marking system, you will find that with increasing
experience in the handling and operation of the system, you will build up a
considerable stock of data which is very valuable to your company. For this reason
in particular, it is essential to protect yourself against loss of data by means of
regular back-ups.
We also recommend that in the case of applications where substantial costs could
be incurred due to the breakdown of the marking system (e.g. due to production
stoppages), users should maintain a stock of replacement parts (printheads etc.) for
quick replacement.

4 Safety Measures

The REA-JET marking system should be installed only in well ventilated areas.

Commissioning, operation and possible later service work should be performed only by
properly trained personnel.

Protective goggles and gloves must be worn whenever working on areas in contact with
ink, e.g. on the printheads, the ink tank or the ink hoses.

Disconnect the system from the main power supply before maintenance work or any other
work on the system.

The safety data sheet for the type of ink being used can be obtained from REA Elektronik
GmbH.

In all cases, users should avoid breathing in ink vapors for any extended period.

The REA-JET marking system must only be cleaned using the cleaners specified for the
relevant inks by REA Elektronik GmbH.
The cleaner specified for the relevant ink must be used at all times.
Other cleaners may cause defects to the system, since these inks and cleaners are designed
specially for use with each other.

The REA-JET marking system must only be operated using the inks and cleaners specially
selected for the application in question by REA Elektronik GmbH.
The use of foreign substances (inks or cleaners) or the mixture of different types of inks or
cleaners, may cause damage to the marking system, and will immediately invalidate any
guarantee claims made against REA Elektronik GmbH.

When using inflammable inks, always take care to ensure that the maximum permited
temperature of machine components or products being printed is not exceeded (see safety
data sheet for further instructions).

Before commissioning an installed system, always carry out a visual check for leaks.

If any leaks are found in hoses, connections or ink connections, switch the compressed air
supply off immediately, and relieve the over-pressure in the ink container.
Defective parts must be replaced before re-commissioning with original replacement parts
from REA Elektronik GmbH.

All printheads are filled for dispatch with alcohol-based cleaner.


If you are using water-based inks in your application, the printheads must be cleaned out
with water-based cleaner before commissioning of the system (see Section 10.2 / Cleaning
the nozzle plate). If this is not done, this will lead to blockage of the printing nozzles.

If inflammable inks are being used, the products being printed, and all parts of the
production and conveyor system must not exceed a maximum temperature of 100 °C.
Take care to avoid any naked flames or sparks in the area of the system.

5 Handling Instructions
The REA-JET printhead cable must not be disconnected when the system is switched on. The REA-JET
control unit must be switched off at the main switch before disconnection.

Cleaning work on the printing nozzles or ink chamber should in general only be carried out by service
technicians or other properly trained personnel.

In case of defects to the printhead, always send the complete printhead for checking to REA Elektronik
GmbH or your relevant distributor.

* Read the installation and programming instructions carefully before carrying out any work
on the system.

When operating several REA-JET control units from a single input terminal, the input terminal may be
disconnected with the control unit switched on.

6 Installation
You will be supplied with all the parts necessary for operating the system for your particular application.
Please check the delivery for completeness (see “Contents”) and any possible transport damage.

Assemble the printhead and the ink system accordingly for your application, and set up the control unit in a
clean and dry area.

For maximum print height, the printhead must be installed as shown in the sketch below
(ink connection and purge button at bottom, connection plug at top):

Fill the ink system with ink, and then close the ink tank immediately.

Fill the ink container up to the maximum level of 5 cm below the filler opening.

* Screw the cap onto the ink tank until it is tightly sealed.

Connect the ink supply to the external compressed air supply (maximum external working pressure 2 bar).

A regulating device for external pressure is not supplied as standard, although this is
available as an option. Please refer to your REA contact partner.

Connect the ink hose to the printhead.

Connect the control unit to the 230 V / 50 Hz main power supply (optional 110 V).

Connect the printhead to the REA-JET control unit (socket on the rear side).

Switch the system on at the main power switch of the control unit.

Turn the ink-pressure regulator to 0 (i.e. fully to the left).

Open the rotary valve of the ink-pressure regulator and set the pressure to 0.2 – 0.5 bar.

In the case of ink supply systems with an integral compressor, the ink pressure can be set at the built-in
pressure-reducer on the rear side of the mounting bracket. To do this, remove the red protective cap, and set
the pressure using a screwdriver. Unscrewing the setting screw increases the ink pressure, and screwing it in
reduces the ink pressure (basic setting: 0.2 bar).

Bleed off any air remaining in the printhead.

To do this, hold the printhead and nozzle plate pointing upward at an angle of 90°. All valves are actuated
and the air removed by pressing the purge button on the rear side of the printhead. The ventilation is
complete when all the ink dots are applied cleanly. The ink supply and the control unit must be switched on
for the ventilation process.

Connect the product sensor to the control unit (insert the plug on the rear side).

Install any required shaft encoders on the production line. If no shaft encoder is being used, the REA-JET
system basic parameters must be set to “internal pulse”.

Now position the printhead in relation to the product to be printed so that the gap between the printhead and
the product is approx. 4 ... 10 mm.

* The gap between the printhead and the product must not exceed 20 mm.

After assembling the system, the control unit must now be programmed.

7 Fault Correction
This chapter deals with problems that can occur during operation.
In order to avoid such problems, please follow the installation instructions and carry out all specified regular
maintenance work.

• Maintenance work should be performed only by properly trained personnel.

• In the event of problems, please first check the installation. Switch the system off, carry out a check, and
switch the system back on again.

• Check that all maintenance procedures have been carried out properly.

• If this fails to correct the problem, please contact our Service Department. Please have your
documentation and setting parameters ready so as to be able to answer any questions.

7.1 Problems with Printing Quality


This chapter deals with problems in printing quality that can occur under certain circumstances.

Before looking for the cause of an unexpected printing result, first check the installation position of the
printhead.

The most frequent cause of an unacceptable printing result (sloping edges of letters) is the incorrect
alignment (angled position) of the printhead, usually in combination with the incorrect setting of the print
height in the basic parameters.

Before looking for any other causes of faults, always first check the setting of the print
height of the printhead in the menu “Basic parameters”, and ensure that the installation
position of the printhead (and thus also the maximum physical print height) is correct.

* The maximum print height is always defined by the following distance: center of the 1st
nozzle to the center of the 7th (or 16th) nozzle. This value must be entered in the basic
parameters. The maximum print height is changed by the angled position of the printhead.

If the printhead is being used to print a font that does not make use of all the nozzles (e.g.: 5
x 5), the above value of the maximum print height must still be entered correctly in the
basic parameters (and not the print height of the 5 x 5 font).

In the event of problems, go through the list of possible solutions from top to bottom, until the fault is

8 Operation of the ST200 Input Terminal

8.1 General Navigation within Menu Items

After switching on the system, the “Main menu” will be shown in the display. All the menu items
available in the system will be listed. Individual menu items can be disabled if required, see Section
9.9, on page 80.

For the easy selection of menu items, one letter, the so-called hotkey, is underlined in each menu
item in the display of the input terminal. Wherever they appear in the following manual, these
hotkey letters are printed in red, bold and underlined.
In order to select the required menu item directly, simply press the underlined letter on the keypad
of the ST200.

In all entry menus a pointer ( ) is also displayed, which can be moved with the aid of the arrow
keys. The pointer can be placed against the selected menu item using the control keys. The
selection process is confirmed by pressing the <Spacebar> key or the <Return> key.

8.2 Control Keys

The REA-JET input terminal is equipped with a number of function keys. When pressed either
separately or in combination, these keys perform certain functions or open other menus.
The use of these function keys is described in the relevant chapters.

The following are available as function keys:

9 The Main Menu

After switching on the system, the “Main menu” will be shown in the display.

The main menu shows the branching possibilities to the basic menu items of the input terminal.
Navigation to the individual menu items is carried out either using the control keys and then
confirming by pressing the <Return> or <Spacebar> keys, or alternatively by direct entry of the
underlined letter in the relevant menu item (referred to below as the hotkey).

9.1 Text Editor

The texts to be printed are entered, formatted and saved in the Text Editor. Texts can be combined
and formatted for printing from individual text elements. The display of the ST200 is a graphic
display in which the text entered is displayed in the same way as it will later be printed on the
product (WYSIWYG – What You See Is What You Get).

The text entry screen may look as follows:

9.1.1 Text Composition

Your text may consist of alphanumeric characters, text elements, barcodes, logos or a combination
of all the above.

When entering text, you can choose between various standard fonts. The appearance of the printed
text can also be changed using the Multistroke function (see Section 9.1.3.10, on page 38).

Text fields may contain several fonts, which can be displayed as a particular font or as a barcode. A
text can consist of one or several lines, depending on the printhead type.

For a lettering text, all letters, numbers and other characters can be entered directly. The system
also offers the facility of inserting and incorporation all stored, predefined text elements (single
texts, logos, date and time fields etc.) in the area “Text elements”.

In the horizontal direction, and in the case of correspondingly long texts, the text is displayed as a
section of the display. In order to view and edit parts of the texts to the right or left outside the
display window (indicated by “<” and “>” in the display), the cursor must be moved to the
relevant edge of the display using the arrow keys. The text is then moved in the corresponding
direction in the display.

9.1.3 The <Alt> Menu of the Text Editor

The <Alt> menu of the Text Editor provides the functions for editing texts and inserting text
elements:

After calling up the menu by pressing the <Alt> key, the required function is selected by pressing
the underlined hotkey.
Alternatively, the function can also be selected by pressing and holding the <Alt> key and
simultaneously pressing the hotkey (e.g. <Alt> + <D> = Insert date field).

9.1.3.1 Inserting Text Elements

The “Insert” column of the <Alt> menu provides amongst other things the functions for the
insertion of the text elements “Date”, “Time”, “Variable”, “Logo”, “Counter”, “SysCntr”, “Shift
text” and “Single text”.
Since these text elements cannot be entered or edited directly in the normal Text Editor, the
corresponding entry screen must be used for creating or editing such a text element. These are the
same entry screens as provided for the creation of predefined text elements (see Section 9.3 Text
Elements, on page 50).

When inserting or editing a text element, the system switches to the relevant entry screen. Here,
either a new text element can be entered, or a new element selected and inserted by pressing the
<Return> key. The insertion process can be cancelled by pressing the <Esc> key.

9.1.3.2 Inserting a New Field (New Field)

This command creates a new single text field, and also offers the selection of another font by
simultaneously calling up the font selection (see Section 9.1.3.6 Format Font, on page 34). The font
is selected by pressing the <Spacebar>, and the selection confirmed with <Return>. The
formatting selected for the text of the new field refers only to the new field, and has no effect on
the rest of the already entered text.

9.1.3.3 Inserting Barcodes

The barcode selection is activated when inserting a barcode field. The corresponding barcode is
selected in the status line of the display by pressing the <Spacebar>. Every change of the barcode
type can be seen immediately in the text display. The barcode types available are “Code 39” and “2
of 5 Int.”.

The following are available:

If a text element such as the date or a variable is to be displayed as a barcode, the required text

9.1.3.4 Edit Element

The function “Edit Element“ is used to edit texts already inserted.


Text elements such as date, time etc. cannot be edited direct in the Text Editor, but instead have
their own entry screen.

In order to be able to edit a predefined text element (e.g. date, time etc.), position the cursor on the
required field. Then press the <Alt> key, and activate “Edit” element. You can now edit the text
element.

The user can of course also select one of the other predefined text elements from the list, which
then replaces the previous text element in the text.

The user can leave the editing screen in order to accept the changed text element with the
<Return> key or, without accepting the changed text element, with the <Esc> key. Any changes
made to the predefined text elements will always be saved.

9.1.3.5 Rotate Element

This function is used to mirror individual fields of a text horizontally (individual fields in the text
can be printed “on end”).
Text tilted to the left to create a vertical font can be mirrored vertically (tilted to the right) with this
function.

If a field is to be printed “on end”, the user moves the cursor to the corresponding field, and selects
this function with the hotkey <Alt> + R.

The rotation of the text field is only displayed when the cursor has left the rotated text field.

Logos cannot be rotated with this function.

9.1.3.6 Format Font

If a font in a text field is to be changed, this function is selected with the hotkey <Font> or <Alt> +
F.

After selecting the format menu item “Font”, the available fonts (e.g. 5 x 5 etc.) can be selected by
pressing the <Spacebar>. The change of the font for the selected field is shown immediately in the
display. The selection is confirmed by pressing <Return>, and the new formatting is applied to the
text field.

One exception to this editing facility is the barcode field. In this case, pressing the <Spacebar>
switches between the barcodes available in the input terminal (Code 39, 2 of 5 Int.).

In the case of a field formatted with “Barcode 39” which also includes letters,
these will be suppressed when converting to the barcode “2 of 5 Int.”, since this
barcode does not allow the display of letters.

In addition to the available fonts, additional fonts can be loaded into the ST200 at any time. In case
of questions, please refer to your REA contact partner.

9.1.3.7 Format Proportional Font

Here the user has the facility of choosing between the normal font and the proportional font view.
In the case of a normal font, every letter has the same print width. An “m” therefore takes up
exactly the same width as an “i”. With proportional fonts, letters and numbers of different widths
are also printed at different widths.
When the proportional view is active, the font name will be preceded by a “P”.

9.1.3.8 Format Vertical Font

The formatting function “Vertical Font” allows the text to be arranged vertically. This applies only
to texts and numbers, barcodes and logos cannot be rotated.

The function “Rotate” (see Section 9.1.3.5) is used to mirror the text vertically.

9.1.3.9 Format Gap

Here the user can set the gap between the characters by entering a value in the range 0 to 11. When
creating a new field, the last gap setting selected will be used. In the display of the text element, the
corresponding number of empty spaces will be inserted between the individual numbers or letters.
The new entry line with the flashing cursor shows the active gap setting in the status line:

The value can be entered either directly with the number keypad, increased step by step by pressing
the <Spacebar> or increased or reduced by pressing the <+> and <-> keys. If no “Display
compression” (see Section 9.1.4.11, Compression of the display, Page 47) is activated, you can
follow the result of the view direct on the display. The selection is confirmed either by pressing the
<Return> key or the arrow keys <↑> or <↓>.

The user can leave the editing by pressing the <Esc> key. The original condition before calling up
the function is now restored.

If an “X” is shown at the right of the lower information line in the display, this
means that the display mode is set to “Compressed”. If this is the case, the
characters in the display will be compressed, i.e. shown without any gap. The
“Compressed” display mode can be deactivated by pressing the key combination
<Ctrl>+<V>. The selected gap will then be displayed correctly.

9.1.3.10 Format Multistroke

Here the user can set the character width by entering a value in the range 1 to 9. In this case each
character or barcode column will be repeated the corresponding number of times when displaying
the text element (see following examples).

The value can be entered either directly with the number keypad, increased step by step by pressing
the <Spacebar> or increased or reduced by pressing the <+> and <-> keys. You can follow the
Multistroke change direct on the display, provided that the display mode is not set to
“Compression” (see Section 9.1.4.11, Compression of the display, Page 47). The user can then
leave the Multistroke entry by pressing the <Return> key or the arrow keys, while pressing the
<Esc> key will restore the original condition before calling up the function.

The selected value for Multistroke will then be displayed in the lower information line of the
display for every text element that has been assigned a Multistroke value (e.g. Multistroke).

If an “X” is shown at the right of the lower information line in the display, this
means that the display mode is set to “Compressed”. If this is the case, the
characters in the display will be compressed, i.e. shown without any gap. The
“Compressed” display mode can be deactivated by pressing the key combination
<Ctrl>+<V>. The selected Multistroke setting will then be displayed correctly.

9.1.3.11 Format Barcode Height

This function is used for setting the Barcode Height for barcode fields by selecting one of the
values offered of 8 or 16 for both barcode types (“Code 39” and “2 of 5 Int.”). The cursor must be
positioned on the barcode field. The current barcode height is displayed in the information line
(H16 or H8).
The user can switch between the values 8 and 16 by pressing the <Spacebar>, the plus key <+> or
the minus key <->.

The user can then leave the height entry by pressing the <Return> key or the arrow keys, while
pressing the <Esc> key will restore the original condition before calling up the function.

9.1.4 The <Ctrl> Menu of the Text Editor

The <Ctrl> menu of the Text Editor provides functions for editing existing texts, entering the basic
parameters and changing the view on the display.

After calling up the menu by pressing the <Ctrl> key in the Text Editor, the required control
function is selected by pressing the underlined hotkey.
Alternatively, the function can also be selected by pressing and holding the <Ctrl> key and
simultaneously pressing the hotkey (e.g. <Ctrl> + <A> = Assign text).

9.1.4.1 Assignment of Text

In order to print an already existing text or a newly created or edited text, the text must first be
assigned to a printhead. To do this, the user must first call up the function “Assign”, and then enter
the required printhead number. A confirmation message is displayed following assignment. This
function can alternatively be called up by pressing the <Print> key.

The displayed text can also be assigned directly to the required printhead (without the function of
the <Ctrl> menu) with the aid of the <F1> to <F10> keys. With <Ctrl> + <F1> to <F10>, the
current text is assigned to the printheads 11 to 20, and with <Shift> + <F1> to <F10>, the current
text is assigned to the printheads 21 to 30. If the text is assigned to a non-existent printhead, an
error message will be displayed.

9.1.4.2 Inquire of text

If required, the user can inquire at any time which texts are assigned to the printheads. After calling
up the function, the user must first enter the required printhead number.

The printhead number is displayed at the upper left of the display, instead of the active
text library and the text number. The print mode is displayed to the right (e.g. once,
normal etc.).

Since an assigned text cannot be changed, all the editing functions are disabled as long as this is
displayed. The cursor can however still be moved as usual to all text elements with the arrow keys,
so that the relevant information can be displayed if required.

A further sub-menu can be opened by pressing the <Ctrl> key.

The following functions are available:

Display BASIC Display of the basic parameters assigned to this text.

9.1.4.3 Copy from Text Memory

This function copies the currently displayed text into another text memory.

To do this, a text memory number must be entered as the destination for the copying procedure.
The system first offers the text number of the following text memory, although this can be
overwritten by any other text numbers.
The copying procedure is started by pressing the <Return> key. If the destination memory is
already occupied, the system will ask whether this text should be overwritten. The copying
procedure can be cancelled at any time by pressing the <Esc> key.

9.1.4.4 Delete (a complete text memory line)

This function is used to delete the contents of the text memory currently shown in the display. For
safety purposes, the deletion process must be confirmed by pressing the <Yes> key. Once the text
has been deleted, the text name remains in the list. To delete the text name, go into the text by
pressing <Ctrl> + <T> and delete the name with the <Del> key, and confirm the editing by
pressing the <Return> key.

A further means of deleting a complete text content is available by simultaneously pressing the key
combination <Ctrl> + <Del>, which will delete the complete text memory. For safety purposes,
the system will ask for confirmation, and the user must enter <Yes> or <No>.

9.1.4.5 Save

Newly entered or edited text is saved automatically when leaving a text memory. However, since
the power supply could fail, or the REA-JET system be switched off at any time, and the automatic
saving of changes only takes place on leaving a text memory, all changes made since entering a
text memory would then be lost.

9.1.4.6 Text List

When calling up the text list, the system lists all text memories of the active text library which have
either a name or any contents. Text memories without a name or contents are not listed.

The text list provides the user with a quick overall view of the texts available in the text memory
(Standard: up to 99 texts, optionally extendible up to 999 texts).
The user can scroll within the list with the aid of the cursor control keys. Pressing the <Esc> key
selects the text against which the cursor was positioned, and shows it in the display.

It is also possible to assign a text direct in the text list. To do this, press either the <Print> key or
the <F> function key for the corresponding printhead.

The list view is used generally for a better overview when selecting or assigning texts. This view
shows all occupied text memories, with the text numbers in the left column and the text names in
the right column.

The currently selected text is indicated by a pointer indicating the text number or text name. On
calling up the list view, the pointer will initially be positioned against the text number of the current
text.
The pointer can be moved up or down to the required text using the arrow keys, and also between
the text numbers and text names with the aid of the arrow keys <←> and <→>. The visible section
of the list thereby scrolls along automatically. If you use the <Ctrl> key and the up/down arrow
keys, you can move through the list page by page.
If the pointer is positioned against the text numbers, the list will be sorted by text numbers. If the
pointer is positioned in the text names column, the list will be resorted by text names.

Searching in the text list

An entry field with flashing cursor above the list view offers the facility of also selecting texts
directly by entering the text number or the text name.

If the first character entered here is a number, the entry will be interpreted as a
text number.

The pointer will be placed automatically in the text number column and indicates the text with the
entered number. As soon as another character is entered, the pointer jumps immediately into the
text name column to the text with the entered name, and the list is resorted according to text names.
From the first character entered, the pointer will indicate as accurately as possible the correct text,
and will immediately move to the first text whose text number or text name most closely
corresponds with the character entered.

The last character entered, or all the characters, can be deleted by pressing the <Backspace> key.
The entry field will also be deleted as soon as the text selection is continued with the arrow keys or
a text is assigned.

In the list view, a further selection menu can be opened by pressing the <Ctrl> key:

• Inquire: assigns the selected text to a printhead


• Copy: copies the selected text to a specified text library
• Delete: deletes the content of a selected text, the text name is retained

9.1.4.7 +, -, # (Navigation through active text libraries)

By simultaneously pressing the <Ctrl>+<+> or <Ctrl>+<-> keys, the user can switch within the
text memory to the next text or previous text, jumping over empty text memories. By pressing
<Ctrl>+ <#>, a text number can be entered in order to select a required text directly.

9.1.4.8 Text-related Basic Parameters

The entry screen for text-related basic parameters, i.e. text-related additional information, is called
up by pressing <Ctrl> + <B>.

Text-related basic parameters refer exclusively to the currently selected text. Any changes made
apply only to this text. By the assignment of text-related basic parameters (F1 / F2), the fields of
the generally valid basic parameters from the main menu are overwritten with respect to the
selected text.

Since text-related basic parameters overwrite the entries of the global basic
parameters in the control unit, care must be taken when reassigning the basic
parameters to ensure that these are reset to the original condition if required.

9.1.4.9 Text-related Basic Parameters (BP) of/off

Active text-related basic parameters can be seen from the letter “P” at the lower right of the
display.

9.1.4.10 Allocating Text Name

The use of text names facilitates administration within the text library. In the case of a large
number of saved texts in particular, the user can retain a better overview by entering a text name or
a text-related designation (e.g. product or article number or similar).
The activated entry of the text name can be seen from the pointer (>) with the flashing cursor
indicating the current text name, The old text name can be edited at any time, or a new name
entered. The names may be up to 40 characters in length.
The user can then leave the name entry by pressing the <Return> key, <Esc> key or the arrow
keys <↑> and <↓>, and the newly assigned text name will be saved.

9.1.4.11 Compression of the display

If the text contains larger Multistroke values or gaps between the letters, the text display can be
compressed with the aid of the key combination <Ctrl>+ <O> in order to provide a better
overview of the text display, since more text can now be shown simultaneously in the display. The
text is shown in the display with a Multistroke setting of 1 and a gap setting of 1.
The compressed text display does not therefore accurately reproduce the resulting imprint on the
product.

If compression of the text display is activated, an ‘X’ will be shown at the lower right of the
display. The compression can be switched off by again pressing the <Ctrl> and <O> keys.

9.2 Text Assignment

In addition to the Text Editor, which allows editing of the text, the main menu also provides a
separate text assignment function with a largely similar display, although with disabled editing
functions.

The saved texts with text content or text names can be selected as follows:

If a text is too long to be shown in the display, this will be indicated in the status display by the
symbols “>” or “<”. The user can scroll slowly through these long texts by pressing the <←> and
<→> keys. Pressing the key combinations <Ctrl> and <→> or <Ctrl> and <←> jumps direct to
the end or beginning of the text.

The text can be assigned directly to the corresponding printheads by pressing the <F1> or <F2>
keys.

Pressing the <Esc> key leaves the text assignment and returns the user to the main menu. On
leaving the text assignment function or the Text Editor by pressing <Esc>, the system notes the last
text memory called up, and displays this memory again the next time the function is called up.

9.3 Text Elements

Individual text elements can be inserted into a text to be printed. These include the date, the current
time, a previously selected logo, a barcode, a counter or a text from a collection of frequently used
individual text components. Text fields for later use can also be predefined.

The text elements entered here are “unformatted”, i.e. they contain no information on the position,
the method of display or the font used. The formatting is only established when the text element is
inserted into the text to be printed.
The same text element (such as a date field) can therefore be shown in the text to be printed as a “2
of 5 Int.” barcode or in clear text in the font “7 x 5”.

The prepared text elements are always available, irrespective of the selected text
library, and therefore only need to be entered once.

The “Text Elements” menu offers the following selection possibilities:

The selection of the functions is made by entering one of the underlined hotkeys or by navigating
the cursor to the required position and confirming the selection with the <Spacebar> or <Return>
keys.

9.3.1 Single Texts

Up to 99 single texts can be created and saved in this area. These only have to be entered once, and
can then be called up as often as required.

These text components can be inserted into the text to be printed and combined with other text
elements in the menu “Text Editor” via the <Alt> menu “Insert – Single text”.
A single text can contain up to 255 characters.

The user can page through the list of single texts with the aid of the <↑> and <↓> keys.
With the key combination <Ctrl> + <↓> or <Ctrl> + <↑>, the user can page forward or backward
six lines at a time, in order to reach the required single text more quickly.

When inserting a single text into a text to be printed, a copy of the text is inserted.
Later changes to the single texts do not affect the copies already inserted into texts.

9.3.2 Date Fields

This entry screen is used to create up to 20 predefined types of date fields. A prerequisite for the
correct function of the “Date fields” is the correct time and date. Both can be set if required under
“Main menu – Setup – Date / Time” (see Section 9.11.2 Date / T, on page 83). The system is set in
the factory to Central European Time (CET).

A date field consists of normally entered text, into which date elements from a specified range can
be inserted at any required point. For example, the user can also create coded date fields with
transposed or mixed date elements.

When inserting a date field into text to be printed, a copy is created. Later changes
to the predefined types have no effect on the text.

In order to edit a date field, proceed as follows:

− Move the pointer to a line that you want to edit.

Open the entry screen by pressing the <Return> key.

− The corresponding selection menu for date elements is called up by pressing the <Ctrl> or
<Alt> keys.
− An element is selected by pressing one of the underlined hotkeys. The date element is shown in
the entry field with the current value.
− Further date elements can now be selected, and/or combined with text.
− If the hotkey for a date element is known, this can be inserted directly, bypassing the selection
menu, with the key combination <Ctrl> or <Alt> + <Hotkey>.
− The selection is confirmed by pressing the <Return> key.

9.3.2.1 Date field offset

The date offset is normally used for printing a “sell-by” date or a production date which differs
from the actual, current date.

When using date elements such as day, calendar week or year in numerical form, the current value
of the system clock is always inserted. If a date imprint in coded form is required (specific
company format) or a date that lies in the future or the past, this can be done by specifying a day
offset in terms of days.

To enter the offset, select the offset function by pressing the <↑> key. The offset value can now be
entered. For instance, the entry “+30” sets the date to 30 days into the future, the entry “-120” sets
the date to 120 days into the past. The entry is confirmed with <Return>, and is then shown
immediately as the new date.

9.3.2.2 The <Alt> Menu of the Date Fields

The <Alt> selection menu provides date elements that can be combined with each other to create
the date imprint.

Day : 1..31 Current day of the month (1-31)

Month: 1..12 Current month (1-12) either as a number or name of the month.

Year : 1980.. Current year (four characters; if the four-character display is not required,
the unwanted characters can simply be deleted).

CW : 1..53 Number of the current week (1-53)

Day : Mo..Su Name of the current day (the names can be changed or translated into other
languages in the menu “Text elements/Weekday names”).

Day : Monday.. Full day name (e.g. Monday)*.

Day : 1=Mo..7=Su Number of the current day in the week (1-7, Monday = 1).

Day : 1..366 Current day of the year (1-366).

9.3.2.2.1 The <Ctrl> Selection Menu of the Date Fields

These additional date elements are provided for cases where such things as a coded date are to be
printed, i.e. for example with transposed or even mixed date figures.
The different fill modes have no effect on individual date figures, since these are treated as
independent elements.

9.3.4 Text Counter

The text counter is used to provide the products to be printed with a consecutive counter number.

In order to enable consecutive numbered printing, the REA-JET system provides 20 counter
formats, which can be inserted into the text to be printed either in clear text or in the form of a
barcode.

Every counter can be adapted to individual requirements by setting the various parameters.

When inserting a counter into text to be printed, a copy is created. Later changes
to the predefined types have no effect on the text.

On pressing the <Return> key at a selected text counter, the following screen is displayed:

To change the values, press the underlined hotkey or move the cursor to the required position.

Explanation of the parameters:

Digits: Number of decimal positions of the counter.

Start Value: Value to which the counter will be reset on reaching the specified end value.

End Value: When this value is reached, the current value will be reset to the “Start value”. If
the “End value” is set lower than the “Start value”, the counter will work
backwards.

Step Size: Step size of the counting process (e.g. “3” Î 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ...).

Repeat: This value specifies how many products will be printed with the same current
value before the counting process is continued (e.g. if 5 cartons are to be printed
with the same counter value Î 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, ...).

Current Value: Specifies the current value where the counting will start after every new text
assignment.

Fill Mode: The user can switch between “Without”, “Flush l.”, “Flush r.” and “Leading 0”
with the aid of the <Spacebar>, <+> or <-> keys.
Without: No fill
Flush left: Fill at back with empty spaces up to the defined overall length.
Flush right: Fill at front with empty spaces up to the defined overall length.
Leading 0: Fill at front with “0” up to the defined overall length.

9.3.5 Variables

Variables can be used in order to apply changes to part of a text to be printed without having to
reassign the text. The variables can either be entered directly or entered by data transmission via
the optional external interface (e.g. weight data etc.).
A total of 99 variables are available (each up to a maximum of 99 characters in length). The
parameters fill mode and length, a name and the content of the variable can be entered for each
variable.
When first opening the entry screen, only the name and contents are initially shown:

Pressing the <←> key enables the display or entry of the parameters fill mode and length:

The user can switch between both views at any time by pressing the <→> and <←> keys.
The variable content will always be displayed.

The user can move forward and backward in the list with the <↑> and <↓> keys, or jump forward
or backward 5 lines at a time with <Ctrl> + <↑> or <Ctrl> + <↓>.

Before a content can be entered, the variable must be assigned a length (see
“Length” column).

The appendix to these operating instructions contains a form, on which you can archive your list of
variables (see Section 15 Form for Variables Overview, Page 98).

Name: A name up to 15 characters in length can be specified for each variable.

Length: The length entry defines the maximum width of the variable. This length will be
reserved in the text field as soon as the variable is inserted. No variable can be used
unless the length has been specified.

9.3.6 Shift Texts

The text element “Shift Texts” enables the automatic switching between predefined, shift-related
single texts within the text to be printed.

Every shift text can contain different single texts for up to 52 shifts. A single text (e.g. Müller) can
have a maximum length of 255 characters, and the total shift text a maximum length of 1000
characters. There are 99 memory spaces available for shift texts.

The entry screen for Shift Texts may look as follows:

After calling up the shift text entry, the entry for the first shift is always active. The pointer (>)
indicates the active entry field, which can be seen from the flashing cursor. Here the single text
relating to the corresponding shift (e.g. Müller, Maier ...) can be entered or changed.

The <↓> and <↑> keys switch to the entry field of the next or previous shift. At the end of the shift
text, a further, empty entry field is always offered, in addition to the single texts already entered,
for a possible further shift.
If nothing is entered, or an existing text deleted in the last entry, the corresponding shift text letter
is also deleted when switching to the previous entry field. In this way, the number of shift-related
single texts can easily be changed by inserting the corresponding number of new single texts or
deleting them with the <Del> key.

If there are more single texts available in the shift text than shifts defined in the shift cycle (time
sequence in which the shifts change), only those single texts up to the corresponding shift number
will be used for the automatic change. If on the other hand there are single texts missing in the shift
text, these will be replaced by empty fields.

The shift allocation (shift cycle) is carried out in the “Setup” menu in the entry screen “Shift
Clock” (see Section 9.11.3, on page 84).

The user can switch between the different shift text memories with the key combination <Ctrl> +
<+> or <Ctrl> + <->. The number of the current shift text is shown at the upper left of the display.

Pressing the <Alt> or <Ctrl> + <N> keys moves the pointer to the entry field for the shift name
(e.g. equipment production group). Here the designation relating to the shift text can be entered or
changed. Pressing the keys <Return>, <Esc>, <↓> and the key combinations <Alt> or <Ctrl> +
<S> switches back to the entry field of the last shift edited.

9.3.7 Month Names

Here the month names of up to 3 characters can be entered in the first column, and the full names
of up to 15 characters in length in the second column. The scroll function is used to view the
remaining months that cannot be shown in the display.

In this entry screen, the spelling of the month names can be changed.
If the month is included in a date field (see Section 9.3.2 Date Fields, on page 52) as a name, the
current month will be displayed with the spelling defined here.

This enables the use of abbreviations such as Jan, Feb etc. or the spelling out of the month name in
full. The relevant translations can also be entered for text to be printed in other languages.

9.3.8 Weekday Names

Here the weekday names of up to 2 characters can be entered in the first column, and the full names
of up to 15 characters in length in the second column.

The spelling of the weekday names can be changed in this entry screen in the same way as the
month names. The names entered here will also appear later as the weekday names within date
fields (see Section 9.3.2 Date Fields, on page 52).

This enables the use of abbreviations such as Mo, Tu, We. etc. or the spelling out of the weekday
name in full. The relevant translations can also be entered for text to be printed in other languages.

9.3.9 Logos

Logos are graphics (monochrome bitmaps), which can be inserted into a text. These are
administered separately from texts, and have a unique name of maximum 8 characters in length.
The REA-JET system has its own editor for the creation of logos, which can be called up from the
“Text elements” menu.
Logos can also be created on a PC and imported into the REA-JET system, provided that they are
available in MS-Windows bitmap format (.BMP) as so-called two-color bitmaps, i.e. black/white.

Please note that a logo can only have a maximum height of 16 pixels.

After selecting the logo entry, the following screen is displayed:

The available functions are listed in the left column. Three further columns complete the display
window for the list of available logos. A particular logo can be selected with the aid of the pointer
(>), which is moved by the arrow keys. The display window will scroll automatically if logos are
available for more than three columns.

Explanation of the menu items:

New: This function creates a new logo. An entry field will be displayed, in which the
name of the new logo is entered. The entry can be cancelled with the <Esc> key
or confirmed by pressing the <Return> key. If the name entry is confirmed by
pressing the <Return> key, the editing screen will be opened.

Edit: With this function, the marked logo is transferred to the editing screen.

Copy: In order to copy a logo, navigate to the required logo using the arrow keys.
Then press “C” for copy, and specify the new name under which the logo will
be copied. Confirm this name by pressing <Return>. The copied logo now be
shown in the selection list with the assigned name.

Rename: On calling up this function, the name of the selected logo will be displayed in
an entry field. the name of the logo can now be changed. The entry can be
cancelled with the <Esc> key or confirmed with the <Return> key.

Delete: With this function, and after a safety inquiry, the marked logo is deleted.

The name and size of the logo are given in the upper line. The co-ordinates of the current cursor
position are displayed in the lower status line, next to the information of the current editing mode
(in this example: Draw logo).
The cursor can be moved in the usual way with the arrow keys. By simultaneously pressing the key
combination <Shift> and arrow key, points can be set and lines drawn to make up the logo. The
combination <Ctrl> key and an arrow key deletes points or lines.

9.3.9.1 The <Alt> Menu of the Logo Editor

The Logo Editor is opened via the <Alt> menu. Here various functions are provided for editing
existing logos.

The help menu also offers the facility of inverting or deleting the logo, or merging logos by means
of so-called inserted logos. The inserted logo remains unchanged, and can be inserted again if
required.

Description of the functions of the logo editor:

Logo: Invert: This function inverts the current logo, which means that all set
pixels are deactivated, and all previously inactivated pixels are
activated. (Negative view).

Clear: Deletes the content of the current logo, after a safety inquiry.

Change Size: Here you can change the height and length (in pixels) of the field
size reserved for the current logo.

If you assign a smaller size to an existing logo, the area of the logo outside
the defined size will be deleted. Even if you modify the size again, the part
of the logo that was cut off is no longer available.

Insert: Up to 3 other logos can be inserted or blended into an existing logo


as inserted logos. Calling up this menu item displays a list of the
available logos. The selection of a logo is completed by pressing
the <Return> key. The logo is then inserted into the first logo
called up, and can now be positioned with the aid of the arrow
keys.
Pressing <Return> takes you back to the drawing mode. Here the
first logo loaded can be edited, although not the inserted logo. An
inserted logo can only be edited after leaving the entry mode of the
logo first loaded. If this logo is loaded again, the pixels of the
inserted logo can also be edited.

If the user leaves the entry mode, the inserted logo becomes part of
the first logo loaded, and can no longer be activated!!
The <Alt> menu available in this mode offers the functions
“Invert”, “Delete”, “Drawing mode”, “Insert”, and “Activated
inserted logo”.

Activate inserted logo: After selecting this function, a selection screen will be displayed.
Here an inserted logo can be selected, and then activated by
pressing <Return>. An activated logo can be moved, inverted or
deleted, without affecting the originally loaded logo. Pressing
<Return> takes the user back to the entry mode.

9.4 Status Reading

The “Status Reading” menu shows the current status of the connected printhead drivers. This
allows a rapid overview of the number, head driver software version and status of the connected
printheads:

By positioning the cursor at the “Head” and entering the printhead number, the configuration data
set for the selected printhead will be displayed.
The “Head Driver Version” shows the software version of the external connected control unit.

Under “Dot/Jet Quantity”, the number 7- or 16-nozzle will be displayed, depending on the
connected control unit.
The “Print Message” informs the user whether a print message will be output or not. If you position
the pointer on this menu item, you can select between different print messages using the
<Spacebar>. See Section 9.11.4.1 Print M, on page 86.

The information “Basic param. loaded” shows whether the basic parameters have been loaded into
the control unit. You can also display the preset basic parameters by pressing the hotkey “B”. For
basic parameter setting, see Section 9.5 Basic Parameter, P. 68.

Under “Text Loaded to Head” the user is informed whether a text has been loaded in the control
unit. If a text is loaded, you can display it, together with all its text attributes, by pressing the
hotkey “T”. Pressing the <Ctrl> key opens a further menu, in which you can inquire about further
assigned texts of other printheads and basic parameters. The “Compression” display mode can also
be switched between compressed and back again by pressing the hotkey “O” (see Section 9.1.4.11,
P. 47).

Pressing <Ctrl> + <+> or <Ctrl> + <-> switches to the next or previous printhead.
The data of the relevant printheads can be displayed direct by pressing the function keys <F1> for
printhead 1, <F2> for printhead 2, etc.

The “Print Enabled” message in the status menu shows you whether printing is enabled for the
current printhead. Pressing the hotkey “E” takes you to the maintenance menu (see Section 9.8, on
page 79). Here the available printheads can either be enabled or disabled for printing.

The ST200 input terminal supports up to 2 printheads in the basic version. Extension up to 32
printheads is also optionally available through the REA-JET network.

9.4.1 The <Ctrl> Menu of the Status Display

By pressing the hotkey “L” you can display a list of all available printheads from which to select.
With <Ctrl> + <+> or <Ctrl> + <->, the printhead number can be switched over in order to
display the status messages of different printheads.

By pressing the hotkey <S> you can inquire about the extended ST200 status information, which
will be displayed as shown in the following screen.

Max. Text Memo: In the basic version, the ST200 has a memory capacity of 99 texts. This
memory can be optionally extended to 999 texts.

9.4.2 Enabling Software Options

In the screen “ST200 STATUS”, further options can be enabled by simultaneously pressing the key
combination <Ctrl> + <F1>. An enabled option can be seen from the asterisk shown to the left of
the option number in the display.

The function and operation of the possible options is described in greater detail in a supplementary
manual.

The enabling of an option can be carried out either in the factory or by the user himself. We will
supply you with an enabling code for this purpose (xxxxx-yyyyy-zzz). In order to calculate the
enabling code, we will need from you the number of the option to be enabled, together with the
serial number of the device. To enable an option, move the pointer to the required option and press
<Return>. An entry field will be displayed for entry of the code in the above format. Enter the
enabling code, which consists of three groups, in the corresponding fields. Repeat the process if
you wish to disable the option again. After confirming with <Return>, the asterisk in front of the
option will no longer be displayed.

9.5 Basic Parameters

In the entry screen “Basic parameters”, the settings relevant for the printing control can be made
and checked individually for each printhead. The number of the printhead is always shown at the
upper left of the display.

Head Type: The type of the connected printhead can be selected by pressing the
<Spacebar> or the <+>- and <-> keys.
The print height will thereby automatically be changed to the standard
value. The following printhead types are available for selection:

If selecting the 2 x 7-nozzle printhead, the connection for a 16-nozzle


printhead is split and divided between two 7-nozzle printheads by means
of a special cable.

Since both printheads controlled in this way are considered by the system
as a single printhead, both printheads must always have the same basic
parameters.

If two 7-nozzle printheads are connected to a 16-nozzle control unit using


a Y-cable, there are two setting possibilities:
1.) If both printheads are installed on the same side of the product to be
printed, the printhead size must be set to 67 mm.
2.) If the two printheads are installed on opposite sides of the product to
be printed, the printhead size must be set to 27 mm (the system then
automatically inverts the printing direction for the second printhead).

Print Height: The maximum print height depends on the set printhead type. The print
height can also be reduced. To do this, the printhead must be turned in the
anti-clockwise direct, when viewed from the nozzle side (see sketch).

If two 7-nozzle printheads are connected to a 16-nozzle control unit using


a Y-cable, the print height applies for both printheads, i.e. for print
heights of < 27 mm, both printheads must be turned by the same angle.

Print Density: the print density must be entered as a value from “0” (low density) to “9”
(high density). The print width reduces with increasing print density. This
means that the dots are printed closer together.

External encoder:
This setting is necessary in the case of fluctuating conveyor speed.
The travel reference must be specified in the next field “Pulse Rate” /
hotkey “r” as the number of pulses per millimeter, as generated for
example by a shaft encoder. In this case, divide the impulses per
revolution set on the shaft encoder by the circumference of the running
wheel being used.
For example: if a shaft encoder with 3,000 impulses per revolution is
being used with a running wheel with a circumference of 200 mm, this
gives a pulse rate of 3,000/200 mm = 15 pulses per mm.

You can switch between the two selection possibilities (internal /


external) with the <Spacebar> or the <+> and <-> keys.

Conveyor Speed: This entry is only possible if the encoder is set to “internal”. See menu
item description Encoder / Shaft Encoder. The setting range extends from
0.01 m/min. to 300 m/min..

Pulse Rate: This entry is only possible if the pulse rate is set to “external”. The setting
range extends from 0.01 pulses/mm to 999.99 pulses/mm. See menu item
description Encoder / Internal Encoder.

Sensor Gap: The sensor connected to the control unit serves to detect the product
approaching on the conveyor (e.g. carton) and send a signal (Print Go) to
the control unit to start the printing. The sensor gap specifies the distance
between the fixed sensor and the center of the first nozzle of the
printhead. For some applications, the sensor must be mounted behind the
printhead. In this case, negative values can also be entered for the sensor
gap. The setting ranges from -9999 to 9999 mm. The sensor gap delays
the printing by the distance between the product sensor and the printhead.

Text Margin: This parameter is used to position the text on the product. In the normal
case, the “Sensor gap” specifies the distance between the edge of the
product and the sensor. The value “Text margin” determines the distance
between the edge of the product and the start of printing.
This parameter is intended for use in text-related basic parameters, if the
start of printing is not always to take place at the same point.
The overall printing delay is made up of the sum of the sensor gap and
text margin.

Print repeat: The following modes are available for selection:

Normal: The text will be printed once for every sensor signal. The
assigned text is retained.
Single: The text will be printed once on generation of a sensor signal.
It will then be deleted from the active assignment. The
printhead must now be assigned a new text.
Continuous The printing will be repeated as long as the sensor is
-E: actuated. The Continous Gap specifies the distance (in mm)
between the end of one printing and the start of the next
printing.
Continuous The printing will be repeated as long as the sensor is
-B: actuated. The Continous Gap specifies the distance (in mm)
between the end of one printing and the start of the next
printing. If a printing is longer than the continuous print
distance, the next printing will start immediately after the
end of the previous printing.
Continuous As for Continuous-E, except that the printing will be
-EA: stopped immediately at the end of the sensor signal. The first
printing will however always be completed.
Continuous As for Continuous-B, except that the printing will be
-BA: stopped immediately at the end of the sensor signal. The first
printing will however always be completed.

Number of prints: This specifies how often a text will be printed. The maximum number is
restricted to 9999. In the Normal print mode, the assigned text will be
deleted on reaching the set number. In the Single print mode, this
parameter has no effect! In all continuous print modes, printing will be
stopped on reaching the set number, and will have to be started again.

When allocating a new text, the counting starts from the beginning.

Continuous Gap: During continuous printing, this value specifies the distance (in mm)
between the start or end of one printing and the start of the next printing
(see above: “Print Repeat”).

Boxmark active: In this field, the Boxmark can be activated and deactivated.
If the REA-JET printheads have not been used for some time, it may
happen that the first dots are not printed cleanly. This is due to the ink
drying in the area of the nozzle. The printhead can be “sprayed free”
again by printing a number of dots.
The option “Boxmark” has been implemented in the REA-JET system in
order to allow the user-defined setting of this function.
With the Boxmark function active, and after the preset activation time
when no printing has taken place, the Boxmark is first printed before the
start of actual printing.
Activating the Boxmark does not alter the distance between the sensor
signal and printing text. The Boxmark is printed within the print delay.
This is why the sensor gap cannot be any smaller than the Boxmark. If a
print delay is selected which is smaller than the Boxmark delay plus the
Boxmark length, the print delay will be increased accordingly.
If the Boxmark is deactivated, the three following parameters will be
ignored.
When printing the Boxmark, all nozzles are actuated. The position of the
Boxmark within the print delay is defined by the (Boxmark) “Delay”.
If the Boxmark is activated, this will be printed once after switching on
the system, and before the start of actual printing.

Number of Strokes: Here the user can specify at what width the Boxmark is to be printed.
The width is specified in strokes.

Print Delay: This field is used for the entry of the distance from the Boxmark to the
product sensor (in mm).
The delay should be selected so that the sum of the delay plus the
Boxmark is smaller than the print delay. No check is carried out at this
point.

Print After: This field is used for the entry of the time period that must elapse without
printing before the Boxmark function is activated. The time is specified
in minutes.

Changes to the basic parameters only come into effect after assignment!

In Chapter 14 Form for Basic Parameters Overview, P. 95 of these operating instructions, a form is
provided in which you can make a note of your basic parameter settings for future reference.

The current basic parameters can be assigned to the printheads with keys <F1>, <F2> etc.

the <Ctrl> menu of the basic parameters offers the following functions:

The user can switch between the basic parameters for the different printheads by pressing the key
combination <Ctrl> + <-> or <+>.

To switch the display, the key combination <Ctrl> + <N> is pressed to enter the number of the
required printhead.

By pressing the key combination <Ctrl> + <A>, the basic parameters are assigned to the printhead.
The successful assignment of the basic parameters is shown on the display.

By pressing the key combination <Ctrl> + <I> the basic parameters of a printhead can be read
back into the entry screen.
There then follows a safety inquiry as to whether the active basic parameters (in control unit)
should be applied.

9.6 Texts for Lines

In the Line Text Editor, texts for several printheads can be created simultaneously. A reference to a
text from the active library can be specified for each printhead. Alternatively, a text can also be
entered directly. An “*” must be entered for this purpose instead of a reference. The text editor for
entering the text can now be called up with <Alt> “E”. (see Section 9.1 Page 7)
When assigning a line text, all specified texts are assigned simultaneously to the corresponding
printheads as predefined.

The entry screen for line texts looks as follows:

An entry field for a text number is available for each printhead. The pointer indicates the relevant
active entry field, which can also be seen from the flashing cursor. The number of the required text
can now be entered here.

If a text is not available, an error message will be displayed.

If nothing is entered, or an existing entry deleted (<Del>), this means that the corresponding
printhead does not receive any new text when this line text is assigned, and the previous text will
therefore be retained.

A “P” after the text number indicates that text-related basic parameters are active in this printhead
text (see Section 9.5 Basic Parameter, P. 68).

Basic parameters entered in the texts to which a reference is made are not taken into account.

he central part of the display shows the text that is currently active for the selected line text and
printhead.
When switching between the entry fields for each printhead (with the arrow keys or function keys),
the text display also changes immediately to show the new text. This gives the user a quick
overview of the complete line text. This is particularly useful when inquiring about the current
assignment.

The line text <Ctrl> menu is almost identical to the <Ctrl> menu of the text editor, as are also the
functions themselves. Reference is therefore made here to the description of the corresponding
functions in Section 9.1.4 The <Ctrl> Menu of the Text Editor, P. 40.
The difference consists only in the fact that many functions, such as “Assign” or “Inquire” refer not
only to a text, but to the complete line text.

On calling up the function “Edit” (<Alt>+<E>), the display of the current text switches to the text
editor.

In case of text changes to texts from the library, the changes affect all line texts
that contain a reference to this text.

9.7 Linetext Assign.

The menu item “Linetext Assignment” is used to select and assign a predefined line text from the
list. The line text cannot be edited here.

The <Ctrl> menu of the line text assignment has restricted selection options in comparison to the
<Ctrl> menu of the line texts. The facilities of creating, copying or deleting line text, changing the
basic parameters or assigning a line text name are not available here.

9.8 Maintenance

In the entry screen “Maintenance”, connected printheads can be either enabled or disabled for
printing.

For example, during cleaning work, it is advisable to disable the relevant printhead in order to
prevent accidental start of printing.

The disabled/enabled status is changed by marking the printhead with the arrow keys and pressing
the <Spacebar>.

9.8.1 The <Ctrl> Menu of Maintenance

The key combination <Ctrl> +<D> disables all printheads.


The key combination <Ctrl> +<E> enables all printheads.

The key combination <Ctrl> +<T> can initiate manual printing, provided that the marked
printhead is enabled for printing.

The purge function of the printhead is started by pressing the key combination <Ctrl> +<P>. The
effect is the same as pressing the purge button directly on the printhead. The purge function can be
discontinued by again pressing <Ctrl> + “P”, and stops automatically after 5 seconds.

9.9 Operator

The system offers the facility of defining different operator levels. At the different operator levels,
selected menu items and functions can be enabled, disabled or concealed. In he factory setting of
the ST200, all available menu items are enabled.
After switching on the ST200, the system is at operator level “0”.

Menu items can be blanked out in the display, but can still be called up by pressing the relevant
hotkey.

For setting the operator level and allocating passwords, see Section 9.11.6, P. 88 in the Setup
Menu.

Passwords can be allocated for operator levels 1-3. If an operator wants to use functions which are
only enabled at a different level, he must log in with the corresponding password.

If no password has been defined for an operator level, this cannot be logged in!

If the operator has switched to another operator level (by entering the relevant password), the new
operator level remains active until the operator logs out or switches the system off. Logging out
automatically resets the system to operator level 0.

An operator with a higher-level password should always log out after completing
work on the system if he wants to prevent unauthorized persons being able to call
up disabled functions!

Log-in is initially carried out by pressing the <i> key. The entry field for the password is then
displayed. If a password has been defined for the required operator level, this must now be entered
and confirmed by pressing <Return>. The new level will then be displayed.
Log-out is performed by pressing the <o> key. This resets the operator level immediately to “0”.

9.10 Library

The REA-JET marking system offers the facility of storing texts belonging to a particular
application or production area in separate libraries.

All texts and line texts are designated as libraries.


A library has a name (max. 8 characters) under which all texts and line texts are grouped.
Text elements are globally valid and can be used in all libraries.

Every text library has 99 text memories in the basic version, although the memory can optionally
be upgraded to a capacity of up to 999 texts.

The selection screen “Library” shows an overview of the available libraries. The name of the
currently active library is shown in the upper left corner of the display.

To change the library, move the pointer (← ↑ ↓ →) to the required library using the arrow keys
and confirm the selection by pressing <Return>.
If more libraries are available than can be displayed at any one time, the display window will scroll
automatically if required during the selection.

New libraries can be created, and existing libraries renamed or copied. To do this, enter the
underlined hotkey and go into the entry field for a library name. A new name can now be entered
here (max. 8 characters) or the procedure cancelled at any time by pressing the <Esc> key. The
entry is confirmed by pressing <Return>. If a library already exists with the name just entered, a
warning message will be displayed!

A library can be deleted, after a safety inquiry, by pressing the <D> key. If the currently active
library is deleted, it will nevertheless remain active, i.e., as soon as new texts are entered, the
library will be recreated and will therefore appear again in the selection list.

9.11 Setup

The Setup menu is used to make settings to configure the REA-JET marking system for the
required purpose and operating conditions prevailing at the point of use.

The operator interface and all menus can be displayed in different languages.
The selection of the required language is performed with the aid of the cursor control keys and then
confirmed by pressing <Return>.

Further languages are available on request.

9.11.2 Date / Time

In this entry screen, the system date and time can be set or adjusted.
The flashing cursor is moved to the figure to be changed by means of the arrow keys, in order to
overwrite it.

The date or time are first updated only in the internal clock of the ST200 input terminal.

This time is transmitted to the connected control devices by pressing the key
combination <Ctrl> + <T>. The date and time must be assigned to each printhead
separately: only then are the date and time synchronized between the ST200 input
terminal, the control unit and the printheads.

9.11.3 Shift Clock

This entry screen is used to define the shift allocation (shift cycle) for shift texts. Section 9.3.6 Shift
Texts, on Page 60 contains further information on the shift texts.
The complete shift cycle may also total more or less than 24 hours!
The shift cycle is therefore not defined only in terms of the shift start, but also the duration of each
shift and the start of the actual shift in relation to normal time.

The entry screen “Shift Clock” looks as follows:

The user can switch between the different entry fields with the <Tab> key, the corresponding
hotkey or the arrow keys. A pointer (>) indicates the current, active entry field.
If the user moves the pointer right to the bottom of the “Period” column, the next shift number will
be displayed and a further shift can be entered.
Shifts with the period 00:00 will be automatically deleted.

The entry example shows a simple application case with a daily recurring shift sequence.

With a maximum possible 52 shifts, a shift cycle can for example be defined as extending over
several days up to a total duration of 100 hours.
Break times can also be integrated in the form of intermediate shifts of the corresponding duration.

In contrast to the normal application case, a shift cycle can also be defined arbitrarily, for example
with printing alternating every 5 minutes and recurring every hour (12 shifts).

Special cases with complicated sequences containing phases of different lengths are also possible
(minimum 1 minute up to a maximum of 100 hours).

For the shift cycle definition, it is irrelevant whether the shift in progress at the time of entry is
actually entered in the entry field “Current shift”, or any other shift, as long as the correct start time
is defined in the entry field “Start at”.
The only essential factor is that the entry field “Start at” always refers to the current date and time.
In the case of longer shift cycles that are to be defined retrospectively, a shift of the current day
must therefore be specified as the current shift.

Every time the shift clock is called up, the corresponding entry fields are updated to the current
shift in progress and the start time of this shift.
For the above example, at 15:50, shift B is shown as having started at 14:00, although shift A
starting at 06:00 was originally entered.

Care must be taken to ensure that the date and time are set correctly, and have
been synchronized with the control unit before using the Shift Clock function.

9.11.4 Printhead Options

This menu is used to carry out various printhead configurations.

9.11.4.1 Print Messages

Here you can configure print messages and/or status messages to a connected host (SPS or PC) via
the serial interface.

A print message informs the user whether a printing process is being carried out or whether the
printhead is ready for operation. The print message is activated by pressing the hotkey <M>.
Pressing the <Spacebar> switches between the following print messages: Sensor signal, next text,
print start, print end. The selection made here with the <Spacebar> will be displayed in the Main
menu Î Status Reading Î in the field “Print Message”. Changes can be made, as described
above, from the Status menu.

A status message informs the user whether the printing system is ready for operation, or another
process is already in progress. The status change message is activated with the hotkey <S>, and
switched on or off by pressing the <Spacebar>.

In the relevant <Ctrl> menu, the display of the printheads can be changed with the aid of the <+>
or <-> keys. Pressing the hotkey <L> displays a list of the connected printheads with the relevant
names, from which the required printhead can be selected by using the arrow keys.

9.11.4.2 Fonts

Here you can select from a list of different fonts. These fonts can be transmitted to the control unit.

In the corresponding <Ctrl> menu, the fonts can be assigned to a particular printhead with the
hotkey <a> fonts. With the hotkey <i>, all fonts contained in a printhead driver can be read out.

All fonts can be assigned directly to the relevant printheads by pressing the function keys <F1> for
printhead 1, <F2> for printhead 2, etc.

Please note that fonts can only be transmitted to the control unit from printhead
driver software version No. 10.

After font-assignment the basic parameters are deleted and the printhead will be
locked.

9.11.5 Display

Particular lighting conditions at the point of use of the system may necessitate adjustment of the
contrast of the display or the use of background lighting (optional).

<+> increases the contrast (up to the maximum value of 20)

<-> decreases the contrast (down to the minimum value of 1)

<L> switches the background lighting on or off

The changes remain in effect even after the system is switched off.

If no display is visible after switching on the ST200 input terminal, it is possible


that the display contrast has been set incorrectly. In this case, press and hold the
<Fn> and <Alt> keys, and keep pressing the <+>- or <-> keys until the display
becomes legible again.

For cleaning plastic surfaces such as the display, use only special cleaning agents intended for this
purpose. If necessary, check the suitability on an inconspicuous area. In most cases, cleaning with a
dry or slightly damp cloth is quite sufficient.

9.11.6 Passwords / Levels

The entry screen “Passwords / Levels” allows the disablement/activation and/or concealment of
menu items from the most important menus in the display. A total of four operator levels (0 / 1 / 2 /
3) are provided for this purpose (see also Section 9.9, P. 80), for which certain functions (menu
items) can be disabled, activated or concealed.
Every operator level (except level 0) must be allocated a password in order to make certain
functions available to a selected group of persons only. Operator level 0 serves as a generally
accessible level, which under normal circumstances is active and can always be accessed without a
password. If necessary, only those functions are enabled that every operator is allowed to use.

Classified in up to 3 further levels, certain functions can be enabled, and authorized users defined
by the allocation of passwords. The rights usually become more extensive with the rising operator
level.

The passwords should be administered very carefully, since the “Passwords”


function itself should only be able to be accessed via a higher operator level (with
password entry)! Forgotten passwords can only be removed by the REA-JET
Customer Service Department!

In order to define the operator levels and the disabled or concealed functions, first select the
required operator level using the keys <Ctrl> + <+> or <Ctrl> + <->. The entry mark can then be
moved to the corresponding row for the function or the column for the properties “Active” or
“Visible” with the aid of the arrow keys.
Here the current setting can then be changed by pressing the <Spacebar>, <+> or <-> keys. The
password entry itself is accessed by pressing the <P> key, and left by pressing the <Esc> (cancel)
or <Return> (accept password) keys.

Operator levels 1-3 are only activated when the password has been entered.

9.11.7 System Counter

The system counters refers to the counters available in the control unit for each printhead, whose
value is increased by “1” on every printing process.
Text assignment has no effect on the system counter!

The counter of a particular printhead can be reset as follows:

Mark the required printhead with the aid of the arrow keys.
The counter of the corresponding printhead driver is then reset by pressing the <Ctrl> + <Reset>
keys.

Note: The counter will be reset without any request for confirmation!

9.11.8 Data Transmission

This menu is used to save data on external data storage media, and/or to call it up again if
necessary. The data transmission requires the software option RJ-Server.

Receive Data: Here you can load texts, logos, variables, date fields, shifts etc. into the
ST200 from an external computer.

Transmit Data: Here you can transmit data in the reverse direction from the ST200 to
external data storage media.

Setup: In the Setup area, you can select the Baud Rate (speed of the data
transmission), and if the external interface has been enabled, the type of
Data Transmission (standard printhead driver, via external RS-422, via
external RS-232).
If you want to transmit the data via the standard printhead driver cable (the
cable connecting the ST200 input terminal and the control unit), you will
need a special cable with an RS-422/RS-232 converter. This cable can be
obtained as a REA-JET accessory.

For data exchange with a PC, you will need the software module RJ-Server

10 Care

For cleaning plastic surfaces such as the display, plastic-coated or printed surfaces,
use only special cleaning agents intended for this purpose. If necessary, check the
suitability on an inconspicuous area.

10.1 Before Switching On

Before switching the system on, the nozzle plate should be cleaned using the cleaning agent
supplied (specially matched to the ink used) and a clean, fluff-free cloth.

The filling level in the ink container must be checked. If the filling level in the ink container is less
than 5 cm, the container should be refilled.
Ink residue should not be collected for use at a later date (see shelf-life date).

The function of all nozzles can be checked by briefly pressing the purge button on the rear side of
the printhead, while drawing a piece of paper across the printhead. You will be able to see from the
paper whether all nozzles are working and the dots are even. The dot size depends on the material
being printed. If individual dots are smaller or are not being printed at all, this indicates that these
nozzles are blocked.

In this case, hold the printhead with the nozzle plate upward, spray the blocked nozzle with cleaner
and leave it to work. If this procedure does not prove successful, the nozzle plate must be cleaned
(see Section 10.2).

If the upper nozzles are not printing, this indicates that air has probably
penetrated into the system. The procedure to be taken is described in Section
10.3.

10.2 Cleaning the Nozzle Plate

To clean the nozzle plate, disconnect the ink hose from the printhead.

Switch off the ink supply and allow the pressure to escape.

Hold the printhead with the nozzle plate upward, and remove the attachment screws retaining the
nozzle plate. Remove the nozzle plate and place it in a container full of cleaner. Then clean the
blocked nozzle holes (nozzle needle, ultrasound ...).

Flush out the ink chamber of the printhead using the cleaner supplied for the ink being used. Refit
the nozzle plate.

When refitting the nozzle plate, ensure that the nozzle plate sealing ring is
correctly located in the groove provided.

Connect the ink hose, switch the ink supply on again and ventilate the printhead (see Section 10.3).

10.3 Ventilating the Printhead

If the system is allowed to run without ink, the printhead will subsequently have to be ventilated.

To do this, hold the printhead upward at an angle of approx. 90° and remove the air under
continuous operation. The purge button should only be pressed for a maximum of 60 seconds!
The ventilation has been completed successfully when the uppermost dot is printed cleanly.
Ventilation must always be carried out when the upper dots appear weak or are missing completely.

The purge process automaticly stops


after 10 seconds and can be restarted if
necessary

10.4 Replacing the Filter

The built-in ink filter has to be replaced on a regular basis. If the pressure has to be increased in
order to obtain dots of the required size, the filter may be blocked with dirt, and must be replaced.

Before carrying out any work on the ink system, switch the compressed air
supply off and relieve the over-pressure in the ink container.

11 Fault Correction

In case of faults, please first check the installation. Switch the system off, carry out a check, and
switch the system back on again.

Check that all maintenance procedures have been carried out properly. If this fails to correct the
problem, please contact our Service Department. Please have your documentation and setting
parameters ready so as to be able to answer any questions.

13 Guarantee Conditions

REA Elektronik guarantees that the equipment delivered is free of material or manufacturing faults.
This guarantee applies for 6 months from the date of dispatch, but does not cover faulty
installation, improper use or damage to the equipment.
The pump of the pigmented ink supply is guaranteed for 3 months only.

Repair under guarantee

If the equipment purchased fails to function properly within the above guarantee period, REA
Elektronik will repair the equipment free of charge. In order to avoid unnecessary costs, you are
requested to check all the information provided in the operating instructions thoroughly before
coming to the conclusion that the equipment is defective or is not working properly.

Return of the equipment

The original packaging should be used when sending the equipment back for repair. The return
must be made at the cost of the sender, and must be adequately insured. REA Elektronik or the
relevant representative will return the equipment to the purchaser’s address after repair.

General guarantee conditions

REA Elektronik accepts no liability for subsidiary or consequential damages, including damages
resulting in loss of profit or production, delivery delays, material loss or increased operating or
business costs etc.

Customer service after expiry of the guarantee period

In this case, please contact REA Elektronik or the representative responsible for your area.
