BACKGROUND ACTION (PRR 34680)

B. Reason

Accomplishment of this service bulletin will reduce the passenger


cabin noise levels in the vicinity of the riser ducts.

Operators of 737-400 airplanes have reported that the noise levels in


the passenger cabin in the vicinity of the riser ducts, exceed that of
the 737-300 by as much as 8db during boarding and cruising conditions.
Ground test have revealed that installation of two layers of aluminum
noise damping tape on the riser ducts from the floor to the PSU level,
provided a 6db noise reduction.

The noise is significant enough to generate complaints from passengers


and crew.

C. Description

The passenger seats and sidewall panels are removed at Body Stations
500E through 520 to gain access to the four riser ducts. The
insulation is pulled back and two layers of aluminum damping tape are
installed on the inboard surface of the riser ducts. The sidewall
panels and passenger seats are then reinstalled.

D. Approval

This service bulletin has been reviewed by the Federal Aviation


Administration (FAA) and the modifications herein comply with the
applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR's) and are FAA approved.

E. Manpower

Approximately 6 man-hours and a crew of 2 are required to install


aluminum damping tape on the riser ducts per airplane.

The manpower requirements is suggested as a guide to assist operators


in planning and accomplishing this modification. This estimate is for
direct labor performed by an experienced crew. It does not include
setup, planning, familiarization, tool acquisition, or lost time.
Factor this estimate as necessary based on your own experience.

The material identified in Paragraph II.A may be furnished from


operator's existing stock or purchased directly from industry sources.
Accordingly, price and delivery data are not included in support of
this bulletin.

III. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES: 1. The following paragraphs outline the general accomplishment


instructions. The suggested sequence of operations and detailed
accomplishment instructions are indicated by circle notes on the
figures.

2. On the figures, unless otherwise specified:

All linear dimensions are in inches

3. Observe all warning and caution notes in the referenced manual


sections.

A. Remove left and right passenger seats between Body Stations 500E
through 520 (Ref. 737 Maintenance Manual Subject 21-23-25).

B. Gain access to the riser ducts by removing the left and right sidewall
panels between Body Stations 500E through 520 (Ref. 737 Maintenance
Manual Subject 25-21-346).

C. Pull aside insulation blankets to access the riser ducts and install
noise damping tape per Figure 1.

D. Restore insulation to original configuration and reinstall side wall


panels between Body Stations 500E through 520 (Ref. 737 Maintenance
Manual Subject 25-21-346).

E. Reinstall passenger seats between Body Stations 500E through 520 (Ref.
737 Maintenance Manual Subject 21-23-25).

F. Restore airplane to operable configuration.
