PONGAL

Introduction:

Pongal, a significant festival observed by the Tamil community, holds great importance. It
aligns with makara Sankranti, a harvest festival celebrated across India. The primary purpose
of Pongal is to express gratitude to the Sun God for a bountiful harvest. This four-day
celebration takes place during the month of Thai, which corresponds to the January-February
season. It is a time when crops such as rice, sugarcane, turmeric, and more are harvested. The
Pongal festival encompasses various types of Pongal dishes prepared over the course of these
four days.

Thai Pongal :
On this particular day, a unique ceremony takes place in which rice and milk are
combined and boiled in a clay pot. A turmeric plant is attached to the pot and the entire setup
is placed outdoors as an offering to the sun deity. Additionally, sugarcane sticks, coconuts,
and bananas are also presented as part of this ritual.
Mattu Pongal :
Mattu Pongal is a special occasion dedicated to honoring cows. These gentle creatures
are beautifully decorated with bells, corn sheaves, and garlands, and are revered with utmost
devotion.
Kaanum Pongal :
Kaanum Pongal marks the culmination of the Pongal festival. In this particular
context, the term "kaanum" signifies the act of visiting. Numerous families gather together to
