1.1 OUTLINE
1.1 Outline
This dry chemical powder extinguishing system are used for the purpose of fighting fire
on the deck above the cargo area of LNG or LPG vessel and in the manifold area of the cargo
loading and unloading.
The design and construction of the dry chemical powder extinguishing system are in
conforming to the resolution of IGC code.
The main specifications are as follows ;
1) In order to doubly protect all areas, monitor nozzle and hand hose nozzles (Guns)
are installed.
2) Dry chemical powder storage tank are installed.
3) Hand hose nozzles (Guns) to be installed at the rear end of the cargo space.
4) Monitor nozzles which are able to actuate directly and remotely, and further
discharge are installed near the manifold area of the cargo loading and
unloading to protect the manifold area.
5) All hand hose nozzles (Guns) and monitor nozzle are able to actuator directly
by hand on the spot.
6) The capacity of the monitor nozzles is 16 kg/sec. and the capacity of the hand hose
nozzle is 3.5 kg/sec. and is capable of on/off operation.
7) The length of each hand hose line is 33 m.
8) The sufficient quantity of dry chemical powder is stored in each tank to provide
a minimum 45 sec. discharge time for attached monitor and all hand hose nozzles
discharging at their rated discharge rates.
9) All hand hose nozzles (Guns) and monitor nozzle are installed by taking the difference
of altitude of the cargo space into consideration.
of altitude of the cargo space into consideration.
1.3 Components and Arrangement of Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguishing System
The system consists of dry chemical powder storage tank which contains dry chemical
powder of sodium bicarbonate powder type, nitrogen propellant storage cylinder unit,
main selection valve, selection valve, monitor nozzle, hand hose nozzle (Gun),
hose station and pneumatic control cabinet.
The dry chemical powder tank, N2 cylinder rack unit, main selection valve
to be housed in the dry chemical powder room on the deck of the cargo space.
The hand hose nozzle (Gun) and the monitor nozzle to be located at the suitable
places of the deck so as to cover the protected area by two jets of dry chemical powder.
The actuating device is located near each hand hose nozzles.
and monitor nozzle. Furthermore, the actuating unit for monitor nozzle
to be installed in the Fire Control Station.
1.5.1 The dry chemical powder extinguishing powder contained in the dry chemical powder
tank unit to be thoroughly aerated. pressurized and discharged by the N2 propellant
gas through each monitor nozzle and/or hand hose nozzle (Gun) to extinguish the fire.
1.5.2 To operate the system, at first, release the N2 cylinder of the hose station for
the monitor nozzle and/or hand hose nozzle (Gun) to be used. The N2 gas pressure
releases the corresponding selection valve and all N2 cylinder valve.
1.5.3 When N2 cylinder valves are released, the high pressure N2 gas is reduced to the
specified pressure through the pressure regulator and is led to the dry chemical storage
tank.
1.5.4 Upon completion of leading to the dry chemical storage tank, the relief valve is
operated then, N2 gas is supplied to the main actuator of selection valve to automatically
open the main selection valve. When the main selection valve to be opened, the dry
chemical powder extinguishing powder to be supplied to the monitor nozzle and/or the hand
hose nozzle (Gun) through already opened selection valves and thus fire fighting to be
made possible by releasing the valve attached to the nozzle.
In this case, the dry chemical powder to be automatically discharged since the on-off
valve of monitor nozzle to be always opened.

2. SPECIFICATIONS OF COMPONENTS
2.1 DRY CHEMICAL POWDER TANK UNIT & N2 CONTROL VALVE UNIT
2.1 Dry chemical powder tank unit & N2 control valve unit
This storage tank is the dry chemical storage tank which takes capacity of dry chemical
powder to be stored into consideration and to be provided with main selection valve,
non-return valve, safety relief valve, vent valve, safety valve, pressure gauge,
manual ball valve (test, N2 supply) and other necessary parts.
The dry chemical powder to be stored is sodium bicarbonate powder. The quantity of the
storage is as follows.
3. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Each hand hose nozzle can be used by operating the hose station located in the box.
hose station. This actuating device is corresponding to the hand hose nozzle (Gun)
since the sequence to be taken into consideration and so the hand hose nozzle (Gun)
provided at the area hose station to be actuated shall be used. When plural hand
hose nozzles (Guns) are used. Each hose station located near-by shall be operated.
3.1.1 Actuation
Open the door of the station, and open screw down valve of N2 cylinder and ball valve.
3.1.4 Cautions
1) During operation the operator must wear gloves.
2) When the hand hose nozzle is actuated, the discharge of dry chemical powder must be
carried out as soon as possible.
3) It requires about 1 min. from actuation of the dry chemical system until discharge of dry
chemical through the nozzle.
4) Pay special attention to the reaction force due to the dry chemical discharge.
5) Discharge of dry chemical should be carried out from this side of the fire spot to
the other side, thus the fire can be extinguished effectively.
6) The total length of hose line shall be pulled out as far as possible and special
attention should be paid so as not to kink the hose.
3.2.1 Actuation
1) Actuation by Pneumatic
Open the door of the pneumatic control cabinet and open screw down valve of
N2 cylinder and ball valve.
3.2.3 Cautions
1) Operation of the monitor nozzle shall be carried out after loosening the locking
device for up and down, and the locking device for left and right. There locking
device shall be again tightened after use of monitor nozzle
2) Discharge of dry chemical powder can be temporarily stopped by closing the ball valve,
but the discharge must not stop for a long time.
3) It required about 1 min. from actuation of the chemical system until discharge
of dry chemical powder through the nozzle
2) Fill dry chemical into the storage tanks with the specified quantity 1,050 kg, 1,200 kg
of dry chemical powder through the hopper exclusively used this purpose.
3) Upon completion of re-charging of dry chemical powder, the bolts of the blank flange
should be tightly fastened.
2) Remove the flange, and stir the dry chemical powder in the tank by hand.
2) Slowly open the cylinder valve by the manual lever and then the pressure in the N2 cylinder
is indicated on the pressure gauge.
3) The pressure varies with the ambient temperature. If the pressure of N2 gas in the
cylinder is to be reduced more than 10% comparing with required pressure referring to the
following table. The N2 cylinder must be recharged.
4) The above mentioned inspection shall be carried out for all N2 cylinder.
