TechnoVector wheel aligner manual – Camera synchronization and optical barrier for TechnoVector 8 VELOX wheel aligner

This manual describes how to connect the camera synchronization framework to a TechnoVector
8 VELOX wheel aligner.
This manual is to be used by dealers and service technicians.
This manual is applicable to VELOX modifications that use camera lenses OmniVision 4 mm. If you
are not sure which camera lenses your wheel aligner uses, see Appendix A.

Before you start assembling, connecting and configuring the framework, read this manual
carefully.

TechnoVector Group accepts no liability for damage caused by ignoring instructions provided
by this manual.

TechnoVector Group reserves the right to modify the design or function of the wheel aligner
and the framework that this manual describes, for commercial or technical purposes.

Any maintenance operations performed over the wheel aligner must comply with the safety
requirements that this manual describes.

TechnoVector wheel aligner manual – Camera synchronization and optical barrier for TechnoVector 8 VELOX wheel aligner

Overview
TechnoVector 8 wheel aligner's functions is based to detecting wheel position in space by using
video cameras and patterns projected onto the wheels.
To detect the wheel position, you place the vehicle between the measurement units in a way, that
right and left wheels of the vehicles' front or rear axle respectively resides exactly in front of the appropriate
measurement unit. The cameras must face the wheel directly.
Taking a single measurement takes approximately 1–2 seconds. While the measurements are
taken, the wheels must remain steady.
To make the measurements faster and to allow taking them while a vehicle is driving between the
measurement units, you can implement the "drive-through" measurement mode for the wheel aligner. It
won't be necessary to stop the vehicle to detect the wheel position and estimate the wheel alignment
values.
This requires a certain level of synchronization between wheel aligner cameras that can be
achieved by connecting the cameras through the synchronization framework.

1 Safety requirements

Not complying with the following safety regulations may damage the person safety,
health and well-being. It may also damage the device.
− Follow the instructions that this manual provides.
− Never perform any assembling or disassembling or maintenance operation over the wheel
aligner while it is still connected to the power source.
− Never use components whose power cable is damaged.
− Never touch the wheel aligner's electronic components or the framework's components with
wet hands.
− Do not touch any damaged cords or plugs while the wheel aligner is connected to the power
source.

2 Framework design and function

2.1 Areas of application

The framework synchronizes the camera operation that allows avoiding unexpected errors that
may occur when the wheel aligner's PC is sending commands to cameras and reducing the delay that occurs
when the wheel aligner's PC is getting the camera feed.
This synchronization level allows implementing the drive-through measurements.

2.3 Design and function

The main board processes commands that it receives from the wheel aligner and controls the
camera shooting: sends commands to start or stop shooting to the cameras. It also controls the
communication between the receiver and the transmitter.
The main and the auxiliary boards communicate via the RJ12 cable.

3 Assembling the framework

When assembling and connecting the framework, make sure to connect all the cameras
in the proper order.
To learn how to connect the cameras, see the assembly scheme in Appendix B.
Otherwise, the framework will not be able to operate as expected.

3.1 Assembling the framework

Left measurement units

Remove all the screws fastening the upper

and the back covers to the left
measurement unit. Remove the covers.
Remove all the screws fastening the side
panel of the left measurement unit. Pull
the side panel out.

Attach the main board to the side panel

and fasten it with screws.

Use the IDC2-16 cable to connect the
board to the left measurement unit's
lower camera.
Use the LAN cable to connect the board to
the unit's router (typically, the router is
attached to the unit's top).

In the front lower panel, drill the slots.

Use the plastic holder that is supplied with

the framework to attach the receiver to
the front of the measurement unit and
fasten it with screws.

Use the IDC2-8 cable to connect the

receiver to the main board.
To reach the board, you may have to pull
the cable inside the units through the slot
that resides at the unit's bottom.
