story based on how the author
developed the elements.

6. Discussion
There are elements in every story. And,
these are the following:

1. Plot. The plot is the basic

structure that drives the
elements in the story. It
 includes the Exposition that
provides the background world
and context for the characters,
the Rising action that
introduces the sets the
characters on a new journey,
and the Climax the highest
point of the drama.

short story:
A Happy Day
One day, Mario and Lucas agreed to go
fishing. At the river they casted their
fishing rod with bait excitedly.
Suddenly, the water bubbled, they had
their first catch. “It’s a big fish!”, they
screamed as they pulled the fishing
rod. After a while, their basket was full
of fish. They went home happily.

The exposition: One day, Mario and

Lucas agreed to go fishing. At the river
they casted their fishing rod with bait
excitedly.

The rising action: Suddenly, the water

bubbled, they had their first catch. “It’s
a big fish!”, they screamed as they
pulled the fishing rod.

The climax: After a while, their basket

was full of fish. They went home
happily.

2. Themes. The theme is central

idea of the narrative. It
answers the question: What
are you trying to say?. It helps
the reader derive meaning
from experience. It is also the
children would call the moral of
the story.

Example:
I was the last contestant in the bubble
gum contest at school, and I was
determined to win. Constant practice
had limbered my jaw and improved my
techniques. I chewed the sugary wad of
gum confidently until it arrived at the
properly smooth texture. I inhaled
deeply; then I blew. The bubble was
the size of a marble-the size of an egg-
the size of a baseball. When it finally
burst, like a rubbery pink balloon, the
class cheered. I was clearly the new
bubble gum champ!

This selection has a theme of:

Determination, Confidence, Support,
Happiness, and Success.
 3. Characters. The characters are
the people or entities in the
story.
In the first story, A Happy Day,
the characters are Mario and
Lucas.

4. Settings. The setting is the time

and place where the story
unfolds. In the story A Happy
Day, the setting is at the river.

7. Application Remember, in every narrative, the

story usually begin with the settings,
characters, then the plot or the
conflict. Every narrative should be told
in a chronologically order to be an
effective narrative.

to escape and flew away from the
hunter. He ended up at a hermitage
and grew up listening to kind words
and compassion. The hunter put the
parrot in a cage, and soon it learned a
few words and phrases. The hunter and
his family were crude and didn’t care
much about kind words.

hears a loud thunder. Then small

house before she will get wet. As soon
as Maria get inside, the heavy rain fell
down. She sighs and says, “It is good
that I am already inside the house”.
