Visual-based trash detection and classification system for smart trash bin robot

Abstract:This paper presents a trash detection and classification system that will be implemented on a
social-education trash bin robot. The robot is expected can be implemented in public facilities, like
airport, railway station, hall and more which is there are a lot of people that potentially producing waste.
We use Haar-Cascade method to first detect any objects on the floor. Then, Gray-Level Co-Occurrence
Matrix (GLCM) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) are combined to get a set of features. Support
Vector Machines (SVM) is used to classify the features into organic waste, non-organic waste, and non-
waste. Offline testing of classification system using 5-fold Cross Validation method obtain 82,7% of
accuracy. Online testing of detection and classification system obtain 63.5% of accuracy with the best
distance gained when the camera is tilted down to -40° with minimum distance for detection is 80 cm
and 200 cm for maximum detection. By using this robot, it is expected to help instill the habit of
disposing of garbage in the right place. The purpose of this research is making people aware of handling
their waste in the right way and hopefully, it can reduce the waste problem

Autonomous Trash Collecting Robot

Abstract – In this present era, people live a very busy life. In Such a situation, a person will always finding
the way to saving Time. Especially for working women it becomes difficult to Handle both home and
office work together. So proposing an Autonomous robot this can collect waste from an environment.
Then it will discharge the waste to the area which is already Predefined autonomously. The robot tested
in a designed Region. It performs the task like avoiding the static and Dynamic obstacles, sucking of
waste mechanism. Combination Of S-shaped algorithm and wall follow algorithm is used to Clean the
entire room efficiently.

Trash Basket Sensor Notification Using Arduino with Android Application

The protection of society and environment from garbage accumulation and Its polluting effects is carried
by waste management companies, the services Provided by these companies are improving life overall
quality. By Preserving raw materials, proper collecting and elimination of trash have Reduced pollution
and environmental impact. On the other hand, areas which Are suffered from inappropriate negative
service appreciate the garbage Collector’s valuable efforts. Appropriate garbage collection and
management Facilities have made a recycling process improvement which caused a Reduction in waste
generation. Also controlling the released contaminators And pollutants has decreased the impact on
landfills and protected the Environment from the pollution negative effects. Using mobile and electronic
Technology to enable waste management companies to finish its work and Make it easier for collecting
trash in a simple and an easy way. We introduce Trash Sensor Android Application to help waste
management companies Detect trash levels to collect it and help citizens from undesired odours.

STB: Human-dependent Sociable Trash Box

Abstract:We developed a Sociable Trash Box (STB) as a children-assisted robot able to collect the trash in
order to convey its intentional stance to children. The STB is capable of engaging manifold affiliation
behaviors to build a social rapport with children by collecting the trash around their environment. In
particular, the STB is a child-dependent robot that walks alone in a public space for tracing humans and
trash for the purpose of collecting the trash. The robot is incapable of collecting the trash by itself, and it
engages by using interactive behaviors and vocalizations to make a social coupling with children based
on the robot’s anticipation to accomplish its goal. The present experiment investigates how STB
behaviors are effective in conveying intentions to evoke children’s social interactions and to assist in
collecting the trash in their environment.

Trash can robot: High School Robotics initiative

Abstract:This paper, written by students on the Rockwall High School (Texas) Robotics Team, describes
how we developed a remote-controlled, ldquotalkingrdquo trash can robot for greater public exposure
for our team and for greater practical experience in robotic construction and design. We were motivated
by the FIRST (for inspiration and recognition of science and technology) emphasis on fostering
enthusiasm in the technological field on a competitive level. We used this framework in a non-
competition setting to design, build, and test our trash can robot. After the construction and trouble-
shooting were completed, we demonstrated the trash can robot to our community, stimulating local
interest in FIRST and robotics in general. We learned important real-world engineering concepts from
this project and inspired fellow students with an enthusiasm for computer science, engineering, and
technology.

On the lightweight truss structure for the trash can-handling robot

With the rapid development of cities, the automated and intelligent garbage transportation has become
an important direction for technological innovation of sanitation vehicles. In this paper, a vehicle-
mounted trash can-handling robot is proposed. In order to reduce the cost of the robot and increase the
loading capacity of the intelligent sanitation vehicles, a lightweight design method is proposed for the
truss structure of the robot. Firstly, the parameters of the robot that are related to the load are
optimized by multi-objective parameter optimization based on particle swarm optimization. Then, the
material distribution of the truss structure is optimized by topology optimization under multiple load
cases. Finally, the thickness of the truss structure parts is optimized by discrete optimization under
multiple load cases. The optimization results show that the mass of the truss structure is reduced by
8.72%, the inherent frequency is increased by 61.08%, and the maximum stress is reduced by 10.98%.
The optimization results achieve the goal of performance optimization of the intelligent sanitation
vehicle, and prove the feasibility of the proposed lightweight design method.

The design and implementation of smart trash bin

This paper presents a cost-effective design of an intelligent waste container for small-scale cases. This
system is based on Arduino Nano board and an ultrasonic sensor to monitor the fullness level of the
container and give SMS alerts using a GSM module. The system is powered by lithium battery power
bank supported by solar cell panel. The system provides an option of charging external portable devices
using the power bank. Moreover, the system will store usage events, recorded by PIR sensor, and fullness
events on a memory card, which is also used to play audio message using a speaker, when the bin is
being used. Finally, the system is implemented successfully with an acceptable overall cost for the
intended application. The system performance was found satisfactory according to the obtained test
results.
