EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN UK

The educational system in the UK belongs to one of the highest quality and most reputable in
the world. The United Kingdom consists of four countries - England, Scotland, Northern
Ireland and Wales. In these countries the education system is the same or very similar. The
British teaching style is interactive and focused on students and working in groups. The main
goal is the development of the child's creative and research abilities. Children are actively
involved in experiments and team projects. In each semester there is a small vacation of
several days and free weekends. Education is compulsory for everyone from 4-5 to 16 years
old. Most school require students to wear schools uniforms. At the state schools equipment
and education are free. Independent schools are financed by fees and private money. Their
school day starts at 9 a.m. and they finish at about 4 p.m. The school year begins in
September, and is divided into tree terms, with holidays at Christmas, at Easter, and in
summer. British students are evaluated by grades from A to F.

Accommodation:
During their studies, students are usually divided by age and are accommodated in
residences on the school grounds. Younger students live in larger groups of three to five
people, while older students live one or two. Graduates often live separately and prepare for
an independent life.

About money:
Most school children receive free education whilst others attend independent fee paying
schools. With the exception of children attending independent or private paying schools,
most children attend school for fee in the UK. However, students wishing to engage in post-
secondary education, such as university, will need to incur their tuition fees. These fees vary
from one university to another and overseas students are usually required to pay higher
tuition fees. For financial assistance with tuition, many students have the option to apply for
a scholarship or a student loan.
Home schooling:
Attending school isn't compulsory. The only demand is that every student receives on
¨efficient full-time education suitable to this age, ability and aptitude, either by regular
attendance at school or otherwise¨. Over 50 000 student are home schooled each year.
The systém is divided into:
- Nursery – from six weeks to 4 years
- Preschool – 3-5 for children who are not old enough to go to school
- Primary school – 4 to 11 years in our country it is 1.-6. class
- Secondary school - 11 to 16 years old students, students have professional subjects that
prepare them for the next level. As part of Secondary School (from approximately the age of
14), students at secondary school have specific and specialized GCSE subjects (General
certificate of secondary education), which prepare them for the next level of education, the
Sixth form.
- Sixth form – during this period, students complete their secondary education and have 3
options for completing secondary school
1. A – level = Czech high school diploma, chosen by those who want to in their their
studies
2. BTECs = students who has already been studying one field, a combination of theory and
practice
3. IB diploma = prepares for the international matriculation exam, then accepted by the
world's universities
- Universities - are the same as here. The most prestigious universities in Britain are Oxford,
Cambridge, University College London. In the first phase, students obtain a bachelor's
degree-3 years. At higher levels of study, Master's degrees are awarded - 1-2 years or Doctor
- 3-5 years. For foreign students, there is a Foundation Program — preparation for bachelor's
studies. It complements secondary education and significantly improves English language. It
lasts two months. You have to pay for it. Students can have a stipendium.

Possibilities of joining the university is:

-Zero year - foundation
It is a preparatory year where English and academic skills are improved and we can apply to
the university during the whole year
-First year - with extra preparation
That's a normal year, but as a bonus they have 4-7 hours of extra lessons.
They are focused on improving English, preparation and processing of presentations and
individual lessons with a lecturer
