Mathematics Assessment Objectives

1. Direct and Inverse Variation

1 Explain the difference between direct and inverse variation. Give an
example of each.
2 If y varies inversely with x and y = 12 when x = 6, find the value of
y when x = 8.
3 If y varies directly with square root of x + 2 and y = 15 when x = 7,
find the value of y when x = 14.

2. Ratio and Proportion

x
1 Solve the proportion: 4 = 35 .
2 If the ratio of boys to girls in a class is 2:3, and there are 20 boys,
how many girls are there?
3 A recipe calls for 3 cups of flour and 2 cups of sugar. If you want to
make half of the recipe, how many cups of sugar do you need?

3. Percentages
1 Calculate 15% of 80.
2 If a shirt originally costs $40 and is on sale for 25% off, what is the
sale price?
3 If a student scores 75 out of 100 on a test, what percentage did they
score?

4. Break-even Points in Business

1 A company sells a product for $10 each. The fixed costs are $100 and
variable costs are $5 per unit. Determine the break-even point.
2 Explain what the break-even point represents in a business scenario.
3 If the fixed costs are $2000, the selling price is $20, and the variable
cost per unit is $8, calculate the break-even point in terms of units
sold.

5. Factorization Techniques
1 Factorize the expression 4x 2 − 9.
2 Solve the equation x 2 − 5x + 6 = 0 by factorization.
3 Factorize the expression 3x 2 + 12x.

6. Change of Subject Operations

1 Make x the subject of the formula: y = 3x − 5.
2 Make y the subject of the formula: 2x + 3y = 12.
3 Make z the subject of the formula: 2x + 3y − z = 10.

7. Algebraic Manipulations
1 Simplify the expression: 2(x + 3) − 3(2x − 1).
2 Solve the equation: 2(x + 5) = 3(x − 1).
3 Simplify the expression: 4x − (3x − 2).

8. Linear Programming
1 Write the objective function for a linear programming problem where
you want to maximize profit given constraints.
2 Solve the linear programming problem:

Maximize P = 3x + 5y

x ≥ 0

subject to y ≥ 0

2x + 3y ≤ 12

3 Explain the concept of constraints in linear programming and provide

an example.
