How To Solve Cryptograms
Cryptograms are popular puzzles worldwide, usually found in
newspapers. The puzzles are short quotes or phrases which
are encrypted via a substitution code (one letter replaced by
another). This is then applied to all letters in the phrase/quote
down the order of the alphabet.

Example Cryptogram
Suppose you had the following cryptogram:

ZNK MXGYY OY GRCGEY MXKKTKX

When decrypted, looks like this:

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER

Here, the ‘T’ is replaced by a ‘Z’. Following that pattern, ‘H’ is re-
placed by ‘N’, ‘E’ by ‘K’, and so on.
The objective is to figure out the code and solve each puzzle!
Cryptogram Solving Tips
1. Look For Common Letters.
The most common letters in the English alphabet are: E, T, A, O,
N, with I and S closely behind. So look at which letters occur most
often in the cryptogram and work with those.

2. Solve The Short Words First.

Finding the short words first will massively help with the decryption
of these cryptograms. After all, they’re just 2, or 3 letters!

Most common 2 letter words: IF, IT, AT, BY, ON, OF, AS, OR, HE,
BE, TO

Most common 3 letter words: THE, AND, FOR, HIS, NOT, BUT,
YOU, ARE, HER, HAD

3. Spot The Repeated Letters.

Only certain letters appear one after the other in English words. The
most common are: LL, MM, SS, RR, NN, TT, OO, EE. Spotting
these will help early on, especially if combined with a short word.

4. Contractions.
Contractions are two words joined together by an apostraphe.
Words such as: won’t, you’re, don’t, shouldn’t. Spotting these and
deciphering them will help towards solving the whole puzzle.
5. Digraphs.
Some letters will appear commonly in pairs. One good example
is ‘TH’ as it appears in THE, THERE, THIS, THAT etc. Other
examples: CH, CK, ST.

6. Unused Letters.
When you’ve exhausted all of your effort, take a look at the puzzle
and see if any letters in the English alphabet you have not yet tried
fill the gaps nicely. In most cases, they will.
7. Always Use A Pencil.
Make sure you solve these puzzles with a pencil. The last thing
you’d want is to make a permanent mistake on paper!

8. Logic
This is a puzzle book after all. It wouldn’t be any fun if it didn’t
challenge you mentally. Make sure you take a deep breath and
apply as much logic to these puzzles as possible.

The answers to all puzzles are at the back if you

get stuck. But really, do try and use your head as
much as possible.

Oh, and if you’re stuck on a puzzle, why not color

in the page borders while you think? They’re
asking to be decorated!
