BOLT AC TION
THE HERD
OF PRONGHORNSwas nothing more than
a haphazard collection of white specs on the horizon when I left the
truck on that frosty, Wyoming morning. I wouldn’t normally
chance such a long stalk with so many eyes watching, but the odd
buck with the forward raking horns we christened “Funny Boy”
caught my fancy earlier in the hunt.
I’ve killed bigger pronghorns, but I love unusual racks, and
Funny Boy’s certainly fit the bill. Fortunately, a convenient coulee
offered enough cover to help us stay out of sight while working
my way into range.
When at last we made it to the end of the coulee and I peeked
over the edge, I was rewarded with the sight of the herd feeding

I crawled slowly, inch-by-inch, pushing my pack and rifle in front
of me in hopes of gaining the few inches of precious elevation I
needed to make a clean shot. With hundreds of eyes to fool, it
took nearly an hour to cover those 50 yards, but when I finally
rested my gun on my pack and pulled out my range finder, Funny
Boy was still there.
The shot was only 255 yards, but as often happens when
hunting herd animals, I had to wait an eternity for a safe shot.
When the buck finally stepped clear of the surrounding does, I
plastered the reticle squarely on its shoulder and touched the
trigger. At the shot, Funny Boy – the first animal to fall to Mossberg’s
new 4x4 rifle — flopped over on its back, deader than dollar gas.

The primary difference is a flush-fit, detachable polymer

NOT ONE TO
SIT AROUND, I wanted to do more with the test
rifle, so after getting our pronghorns to the skinning shed, I spent a
few hours with it on the outfitter’s shooting range. I started out by
shooting steel targets at 250 yards from a variety of positions. The
first thing that stood out was how good the stock felt. Mossberg’s
marketing and engineering folks clearly put a great deal of thought
into the design, as it does a great job of attenuating recoil, and was
comfortable to shoot from the bench and from field positions. And
even though it was a prototype, the detachable box magazine fed
perfectly, regardless of how fast (or slow) I worked the bolt.
Once I got a feel for the gun, I headed to the bench. First, I
fired three groups with the last nine rounds from the box of 180
grain Winchester Power Points I hunted with. My groups averaged
just over an inch—impressive, but I had a feeling that it could do
even better.
Next, I tried Federal’s 150 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw load.
Given that we were in the middle of nowhere, I did not have a wide
assortment of ammunition to test, and would probably not have
chosen that particular load for accuracy testing if I did, but it
produced several one-inch groups—not bad for a bullet that was
designed for penetration rather than accuracy.
I didn’t choose that Trophy Bonded Bear Claw load by accident.
While we were pronghorn hunting and bantering about
the knock-down power of the .300 Win., Keith, our
outfitter, mentioned that he knew of a bison herd
on a nearby ranch that he thought we

Globetrotting for Ducks and Doves
BY GREG RODRIGUEZ
Although I have booked hunts in Argentina for over ten years, I had never been
there myself. On many occasions my employees and friends tried to talk me into
going, but it was only recently that I bit the bullet and booked my own trip south.
Everyone who had been there raved about the fantastic food and hospitality, and
hunting so good it had to be experienced to be believed. I never really doubted
them, but it was difficult for me to imagine the kind of shooting they described.

GenerationNext:
APerfectFit
by Bob Humphrey
The future of hunting lies squarely on the shoulders of the next
generation of hunters. However, it is the current generation’s
responsibility to make sure there is a next generation. We are
challenged to do all we can to foster and encourage participation
in our sport; including everything from creating opportunities to
providing the right equipment. One company—Mossberg—has
taken this challenge head on.
Perennial leaders in offering sporting arms of versatility and value,
Mossberg has developed a full line of firearms specifically designed in
both form and function for the next generation of hunters.
Fitting the shooter to the gun, or the gun to the shooter, is important
for several reasons. If the gun doesn’t fit properly, the shooter will have
trouble mounting, holding and moving it. This, in turn, can lead to poor
mechanics, missed targets (and later on, game), enhanced recoil effects
and resultant flinching. It could discourage a newcomer right out of the
sport. Proper fit, on the other hand, not only eliminates these negatives,
but instills a sense of confidence in the shooter. The end result is a more
positive experience that will foster more interest in participating.
Unfortunately, most guns are designed to fit a right-handed adult
male between 5’8” and 5’10” tall and weighing from 170 to 190 pounds.
That just won’t do for a young or small-framed shooter. The most obvious
difference between an adult gun and a youth or “Bantam” gun is the
size of the buttstock. The important measurement here is not the stock
itself, but the length of pull (LOP)—the distance from the forward face
of the trigger to the end of the butt plate or pad. LOP greatly affects how
well you can hold a gun and shoot it comfortably. If it’s too long, the gun

will tend to ride upward and outward during recoil, which causes
a right-hand shooter to shoot low and left. It also creates a less
stable, less comfortable and unbalanced shooting
posture, and is more difficult to mount.
A shorter LOP however, is not the only
thing you need to properly fit a youth or
smaller-framed adult. Smaller people may
have shorter arms as well.
A forearm that is too far forward causes
a less stable, front-heavy posture. In the case of
a pump-action firearm, a forearm that is too far
forward also makes the cycling operation more
difficult. Similarly, too long a barrel will also lead
to a less balanced, muzzle-heavy gun.
Yet another consideration, and one that’s
often overlooked when designing a gun for
a smaller-framed person, is their smaller
hands and shorter fingers. That’s why it’s also Three pivotal members of the distinguished 500 family, perfect for the younger and smaller-framed shooters:

for the season was simply a matter of changing loads in your rabbit/pheasant gun. Accuracy with the rifled slugs
of the past fired through a shotgun with nothing but a front bead for aiming was problematic to say the least.
Indeed, if you could hit a gallon jug at 40 yards with any consistency, you had a tack-driver.
That’s no longer the case. Spurred by the fast-expanding market, development of slug loads and
slug-shooting shotguns has advanced more in the last 20 years than just about any other aspect of the firearms
industry. While Foster-style slugs and smoothbore shotguns still represent a major portion of the shotgun deer

The Mossberg family recognized the potential of fledgling sabot slug designs as far back as the
1980s, and in 1988 introduced the world’s first production rifled-barrel shotgun in the 500® Trophy
Slugster®. The gun featured a 24-inch barrel with 1:34” rifling and an integral, cantilever scope base
that allowed a scope to be mounted and removed with the barrel. This unique barrel system (pictured
at right) was fitted to the receiver of the 500 pump gun that had been the mainstay of the Mossberg
product line since its introduction in 1961.
The 500 was an innovation itself in that it was the first pump with a disconnecting fire control

f you’ve priced a new shotgun or deer rifle recently you know it can represent a major investment. Considering the fact that the percentage
of the average American workers’ discretionary income continues to decrease, getting the most “bang for your buck” on a firearm purchase
looms ever more important.
Instead of purchasing two or three guns to handle the chores of deer, turkey, upland birds and waterfowl, many hunters are leaning
toward the versatility offered by combination firearms. These specialized guns accept different chokes, barrels, and stock configurations to meet a variety of
hunting situations. Combination packages vary; some offer factory-mounted riflescopes (no more hassling over selecting the right optics!); some offer barrel and
choke options, and even kits to modify length of pull for growing youth or smaller-framed hunters. By
shopping smart you may be able to purchase one firearm capable of fulfilling all your needs. And it so
happens that Mossberg, America’s oldest family-owned and operated firearms manufacturer, offers
more such guns than anyone else – a fact not lost by the millions of Mossberg owners around the world.
So, if you’re looking for that perfect combo package, I’ve done your homework for you, and put
together a list of some of the most popular Mossberg combo offerings around…popular enough to
make them the worlds largest shotgun manufacturer in the world!
More than 10 million hunters can’t be wrong; that’s how many venture afield
each year in search of America’s most popular game animal, the Whitetail deer. And the
most popular gun for such a pursuit is the bolt-action centerfire rifle.
Variable Rifle Scopes—To help rifle owners

rimfire models— the Mossberg International 802™ and 702 Plinkster.®
Without question the recruitment of new blood, youngsters in particular, is critical to maintaining
our country’s rich hunting heritage. Toward that end, Mossberg offers the 500 Super Bantam Combo,
a 20 gauge set-up that is equally effective in upland fields, marshes, and forest.
The Super Bantam Field/Deer Combo comes with two interchangeable barrels, both with 3” chambers.
One barrel consists of a 22” smoothbore with a dual-bead, ventilated rib and Accu-Set™ chokes in Improved
Cylinder, Modified and Full; the other is a 24” fully-rifled slug barrel, ported to reduce recoil, with adjustable open
sights, and the receiver is tapped to accept scope mount bases.
The Super Bantam’s buttstock and EZ-Reach™ forearm are scaled to the younger shooter and smaller-
framed adult, while also equipped to enable one to customize the fit as the shooter grows. As it comes from the
factory, the buttstock has a 12-inch length of pull, a full inch shorter than the standard Bantam. Included,
however, is a stock spacer and a second rubber recoil pad to increase the length of pull to 13 inches. Also included
with each Super Bantam is a certificate from Mossberg for a 50 percent discount on the price of a full-sized stock,
so the same gun can see a hunter through his beginning stages to being a seasoned pro.
Weighing just 5-1/4 lbs., the Super Bantam is an easy handling firearm. The entire gun, including the
two barrels, carries Mossy Oak’s New Break-Up camouflage finish that’s extremely durable as well as effective.
The Super Bantam Combo is truly a do-everything gun for the growing shooter at a remarkably affordable price.

Two of the toughest birds you’ll ever encounter are turkeys and geese, and the ideal gun for
each is quite different. The answer for many hunters who can’t justify the purchase of two guns can
be something like Mossberg’s 535™ Turkey/Waterfowl Combo package. Here’s a slide-action 12
gauge that comes with two smoothbore barrels—the Turkey barrel
is 22”, with a vent rib, an adjustable fiber-optic sight, and is equipped
with an XX-Full turkey choke. The Waterfowl barrel, which includes
an Accu-Choke tube set (Improved Cylinder, Modified, Full), also
sports a vent rib, but is 28” long, and has a fiber optic front bead for quick
target acquisition in low light —like early dawn or dusk when ducks and
geese are most active. Both barrels are chambered for the potent 31/2”
12 gauge magnum, so they also digest 23/4” and 3” shells without hassle.
Another value feature that comes standard with the 535 Turkey/Waterfowl
Combo includes what Mossberg calls a Uni-Line™ receiver which, in conjunction with
a special comb design on the stock, allows easier, faster sight alignment and target
acquisition. This, combined with the gun’s relatively light, 61/2 lb. weight makes for a very

The rubber recoil pad on the retractable stock proved
comfortable enough and felt recoil was more than

The Federal load was standard velocity and provided
the most “kick”. The reduced-recoil Hornady and PMC
rounds were akin to field loads as far as felt recoil was
concerned. The “semi-auto” Hornady red shell, while a bit
more stout than its reduced brother, was nonetheless
easily controllable.
Shot patterns from the Tactical were what I would have
expected from a cylinder bore. The Federal and PMC loads
gave 5.5 and 6 inch wide pattern spreads at seven yards.

shotgun. While most regular infantry troops have only limited access and
experience with either the pistol or shotgun, I was a member of the
Security Forces Battalion and carried both firearms almost daily for more
than two years.
My principle duty with the Security Forces was as a member of
the Marine Detachment aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrestal. While
every man had an assigned M16A2 rifle, our primary duty weapons were
the pistol and pump action shotgun. All roving sentries and post standers
were equipped with both the handgun and long gun.
The interior of a ship is naturally a rather confined space and the
loading and unloading of firearms had to be carefully monitored. Anyone
familiar with military service will remember the clearing barrel at the
armory entrance. Our clearing barrel was essentially an eight-inch
diameter pipe filled with sand.
My biggest beef with the old Remington guns was with the
unloading procedure. On more than one occasion a weary sentry would
pull back too far on the slide and drop a shell into the chamber. When we
received our new Mossberg 590 shotguns I was pleased to see how
simple it was to load and unload the magazine tube. With the shell

The 590
Mossberg developed the 590 primarily for the law enforcement
and potential military markets. Very similar to the 500, the 590 shares
the same receiver and virtually all other features. The primary difference
from the 500 is the configuration of the 590’s magazine tube. This
part can be easily opened for cleaning and is readily adaptable for the
addition of an extended magazine tube. The Parkerized metal finish
mates perfectly with other military small arms.
Mossberg offers the 590 with an optional bayonet lug
and ventilated metal hand-guard, features that are obviously
intended to appeal to potential military users. The bayonet
lug for the 590 is compatible with the M7 and M9 bayonets
used with the M16 rifle.
Reliability and relatively low cost are features that made
Mossberg popular with the civilian market as well as attracting the
attention of the U.S. military in the late 1970s. It was during this time
that new combat shotguns were needed to replace the aging
Vietnam-era pump guns still in inventory (see inset above for more
on MIL SPEC 3443D).
For those who recognize the astronomical pressures and
pounding a 12 gauge load inflicts on the components of a
shotgun, as well as the other brutal testing criteria, this was
a downright torture test. When all was said and done,
the Mossberg 500 and 590 were the only shotguns
that met or exceeded all the requirements—
a testament to American-made reliability.
