INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the chosen topic to study. It includes the background of the study,
the statement of the problem, conceptual framework, significance of the study, and scope and
limitation of the study, which are manually laid out by researchers so that the audience can fully
Almost all business owners are excited about opening their new business, but with the
growth of Globalization there are challenges that have to be faced by their business. just like the
difficulties in balancing growth and quality in a business. Globalization is the means by which
countries interact with each other. For small businesses, growth often comes with growing
pains. In many instances, you have to make the choice between working long hours and asking
your staff to do the same or finding ways to cut corners. Neither is a great solution, meaning
that, ultimately, you will have to find a way to grow your business without hurting your business.
According to Melanie Chan (2017), there are many challenges small businesses face,
the most prominent being competition and price wars. One analogy puts it this way, suddenly
small businesses are like small fish in a big sea with other small and large fish. The other
smaller species compete for the same food, while the larger fish simply eat the smaller ones to
Small businesses also need to adopt technology in their businesses. The only way small
businesses can compete on the same scale as larger ones with globalization is to adopt
methods of automation and connectivity. It may not be effective anymore for the local vineyard
to simply service the same clients they always have, writing out receipts and steering away from
anything remotely computerized. Small businesses need to evolve to stay relevant and this
includes creating an online presence with the allure of being accessible and being open to
automated solutions that will aid manufacture in the long run. The learning curve can seem

doing things.

globalization and participating in it can be able to make the business grow faster and reduce
poverty. Though globalization requires a high level of education and literacy and poverty level is
still increasing, owners of small businesses in Marikina city should reduce the standards on

City in the Philippines is one of the places that was affected by Globalization, and there was
much to look forward to on the business, the people hope to bring developments within the
business as well on the economy in order to help the society to be on its better status.
Globalization has been very effective in the Philippines. There have been major changes
in the economy since 1995 when the Philippines took part in signing agreements with the World
Trade Organization. There have been changes in the country such as more labor and more
companies that have emerged to help the economy. Globalization has been rapidly developing
in the Philippines ever since the influence of the United States during World War II. The
globalization of the Philippines, in my opinion, has grown since the development of the country.
There are a lot of technological and global advances that have gone on in the Philippines and I

Globalization is a great sign of development of an economy, it also has a negative impact on the
small businesses resulting in their business putting it to a competition. One example of small
businesses in Marikina City are milk tea shops, street foods shops, coffee shops etc.
Technology is also one of the main tools of competition and the quality of goods and services.
On the other hand it necessitates quite a lot of cost for the company. The company has to use
the latest technology to increase their sales and product quality, this affects the lifespan of small
business and environment in different ways. These have affected all small businesses related
populations, brought by trading in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment,
people, and information. It speeds up the movements and exchanges of goods, services,
technology, and capital in the business. As Globalization leads the concept of main factor in the
business industry, the competition gets bigger which affects the small businesses in Marikina
City. The said competition affects the target market, technological adaptation, the cost of goods
and services etc. the small or local businesses have to compete with bigger corporations that
produce cheaper or lower costs of goods which puts the small businesses at risk. Biswanath
(1988) has conducted a study of small scale industries to analyze whether the productivity level
of these industries is up to their optimum level or not. He observed that small scale industries
have very lower labor productivity, however capital productivity is very high. His overall
Globalization also affects the needed capital for starting a business. As globalization
increases, the chance that a business owner needs a larger capital to start a business grows,
because he needs to keep up with the growth to advertise his business. Also because of
Globalization, customers have a large multitude of choices in the market and this affects their
behaviors. They want to acquire goods and services quickly and in a more efficient way than
before. They also expect high quality and low prices. All these expectations need a response
from the company, otherwise sales of the company will decrease and they will lose profit and
market share. A company must always be ready for price, product and service and customer
Small businesses in Marikina City begin to lose their distinctive features, and lose their
global diversity. There are many new businesses that change the theme and adapt it to what is
the current trend that is popular globally So that it will also affect our own product and the other
country's product is more recognized than our own product. Since the resources available and
the amount of the capital to be invested in businesses are quite low, establishment and
development of large size industries is not an easy task for such businesses.
Increase in the standard for hiring employees, so even if an applicant can do the job, they are
not given a chance because they do not fit the said standard of a business or company. The
increasing demand and low supply of job opportunities may cause employees to offer cheaper
labor to secure employment. As a result, it also makes it easy for employees to opt for cheap
labor in places that have higher employee exploitation due to lax or non-existent labor laws.
This situation creates a vacuum and removes employees in the company or industry, increasing
unemployment and inequality in the country. Although there's the option of retraining employees
and re-integrating them into new international markets, this may take considerable time, further
increasing the global competition for limited job opportunities. Provisions may contain different
rules regarding employee rights and obligations, work permits, termination procedures, filing

Economic globalization has created many challenges for small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) due to the rapid increase in competition. At present, the economic competition is seen
in global domains, and it has become severe after the 1980s with economic globalization and
turned more severe after accessing the WTO (World Trade Organization) trade regime in 1995.
As SMEs build a vital corporation to the economies in developed and developing countries, it is
vital to consider the influences of economic competition on SMEs than other industries due to
industry-specific features such as low technology base, high concentration in the labor-intensive
sector, low entry barriers, relatively low fixed costs of production, and mainly producing
price-taker goods (Prasanna et al. 2019). Today, the WTO is the leading multilateral
organization which governs global trade and promotes the free trade conditions in the global
economy.

increase their market competitiveness. Furthermore, the fall of communist economies, the

Local Literature
(John Villa, Aug 2016), Globalization has offered considerable controversial impact. It
has been viewed as a process that is a major factor that is a key to the development of the
world economy and also it is inevitable and irreversible. Some regard it with hostility, fear that
increases inequality between nations, threatens employment and living standards and social
progress. These brief facts are an overview of some aspects of globalization and aims to
identify ways in which countries can tap the gains of this process while remaining realistic about
its possible abilities and its dangers. In fact, globalization offers essential opportunities for global
developments but it is not progressing at an even pace. Some countries have adapted to

(2017), Globalization is also considered as one of the factors for the observed decline in the
sensitivity of inflation in the Philippines to changes in real economic activity or the flattening of
the Phillips curve. On the one hand, a flatter Phillips curve implies that demand shocks and
policy errors will not translate into large inflation movements. On the other hand, this means
that, if inflation is above target, bringing it down to the target level would entail a greater
sacrifice of output, giving greater weight to the central bank’s commitment to its primary
responsibility for price stability (Guinigundo (2017). This attribution is based on three
from increasing prices when demand rises. Second, increased trade and investment flows have
made prices less responsive to domestic demand pressures. Third, global migration, which has
intensified in recent years, has caused wages and prices to become less sensitive to domestic
demand shifts. These apply to the Philippines’ exports or imports, which have become less
concentrated (concentration index declined from 0.36 in 1995 to 0.29 in 2016, with 1 as highly
concentrated) and the country has also reduced its divergence from world trade patterns

(Eric S. Parilla 2015) In the midst of economic slowdown and recession, many people
are deprived of enjoying basic living needs. The creeping truth of an economic disease is further
contaminated by hateful political ignominies and social unrest; hence the small and average
economic forces are pinned down to poverty and scarcity of economic needs. It is however with
this eminence that many individuals look for alternative sources of income and become
entrepreneurs. The Philippines enacted R.A. No. 9178, a law that promotes the establishment of

need to nurture and develop entrepreneurs able to take advantage of opportunities created by

business is continuing to drop. Global transformation has a severe impact on small businesses.
According to Oobayashi, these changes mean the loss of the conventional foundation of the
existence of small businesses. Thus, it will result in the loss of job opportunities and the
foundation to start a business. It eventually will lead to the loss of national economic strength.”
The mass production system not only caused the rate of profit to fall, it also resulted in a
reduction in the amount of profit caused by the economic slump. With the amount of profit
declining, the attempt to increase financial income was made through financial speculation.
However, the financialization of the economy boosted the instability of finance, as epitomized in
the 2008 financial crisis. Thus, finance regulations were enhanced with the Basel Capital
Accord. Thus, financing small businesses became difficult. Originally, small businesses in Japan
suffered a chronic fund shortage, and financing from banks made their existence possible.
Nevertheless, the reinforced financial regulations exacerbated the fund shortage of small

economic development. The participation of all sectors is also required in the formation and

This could be due to the Nigerian federal government's deregulation of critical sectors. The

Local study
The global economy has recognized the role of micro-and small businesses in providing
jobs, social development, and serving as an alternative to unemployment, all of which are
critical for economic growth (Rungani & Potgieter, 2018; Tefera, 2013) [38, 43]. Prior research
emphasizes the importance of micro and small businesses in alleviating poverty and
unemployment (Medalla and Mantaring, 2017) [31]. MSEs accounted for the majority of
business entities in the majority of industrialized and emerging economies. However, a recent
study indicates that the growth of microenterprises has remained a challenge, particularly in
underdeveloped countries where capital is scarce and opportunities are limited (Tambunan,
2019)
The Philippines, which has hitherto been reaping the growth dividend from the third

forged previously may need a fundamental rethinking to enable the country to survive, and

According to (Miranda, A.T. and Miranda, J.L.F., 2018), In rural communities, business
establishments such as the SMEs can be a source of power, more so, if they are making a dent
on the lives of a significant number of rural people. Obviously, SMEs have the capacities and
capabilities to generate employment and income that at the very least will provide the people
fair chances of accessing, owning and controlling resources. Through employment and income
that SMEs can provide, people get opportunities of availing improved services on health,
nutrition and education and further maximize their potential toward availing better facilities on
housing, water and power supply. The emergence and growth of SMEs in rural communities
becomes evident when the needed support mechanisms that will make the business
environment more conducive to business operations are in place. Trade policies, for example,
should encourage investors to establish, develop and expand their businesses. Other factors
that may prove beneficial to the emergence of SMES such as the presence of credit institutions

SMEs are recognized by the Philippine Government as the cornerstone of economic growth. In
particular, the government has enacted the Republic Act 8289, also known as the Magna Carta

those that are rural and agriculture-based. The sector contributes about 33 per cent to the
country’s economic growth and employs about 67 per cent of the labor force. The role of the
SMEs in the economy’s growth is very vital. They contribute to a more equitable society.
