Role of Symposium in the Human Rights and Gender Relations

The Grade 10 & 11 students will organize a symposium entitled TAOTAYO: TA(y)o this will tackle
relevant and bold issues that mostly concern the violations of human rights and gender relations.
Prominent advocates will be invited to talk such as representatives from Commission on Human
Rights, Department of Social Welfare and Development (Region IV-A), Gabriela Women’s Party and
Ladlad LGBT’s party. This symposium will provide a valuable opportunity for informing Ibarang, to
encourage their fellow students to recognize, protect and promote the human rights and respect for a
person’s sexual orientation and gender identity.

I. Objectives

1. To Conduct a symposium focusing on Advancing Human Rights and Gender Relations

I.1 To explain who are responsible to uphold, protect and promote human rights;
1.2. To recognize the need for people to claim their rights
1.3. To encourage respect for a person’s sexual orientation and gender identity
1.4. To explain the situation of women and men in relation to family and society and
1.5. To understand gender-based violence and abuse in the context of the overall aspiration
for social justice, freedom and democracy

II. Procedure

1. The first step in the process of planning and organizing a symposium is preliminary analysis
and planning. This step consists of :

1.1. Setting meeting objectives and analyzing the target audience

As with any activity, everything starts with identifying the purpose of the seminar. The
objectives will set the tone for the event — providing the basis on how, where, and when to
conduct the symposium, as well as whom to involve.

1.2. Determining implementation methods.

After objectives have been formulated, the symposium format must be selected and
implementation methods must be determined.

2. The second step in the process is organizing symposium committees. This step consists of:

2.1. Determining the symposium committees, and Selecting the committee chairperson

As soon as the basic elements of the symposium have been identified (objectives, budget, event
date and time, venue, target audience), organizers are now free to move forward to the next

phase of the preparation. Agreeing on the main and supporting topics of the seminar is a key
factor in ensuring its success — so are the individuals to whom you assign them for discussion.
While the chosen topics are able to rouse curiosity and interest among your intended audience
even before the event takes place, the choice of speakers can also contribute the symposium’s
overall success in terms of attendance and engagement. These two elements are the “heart and
soul” of the event. Don’t leave these to chance, or to complacency.

3. The third step in the process is developing the symposium master plan and preparation of all the
symposium materials and other technical requirements.

3.1. Prepare all the seminar materials and other technical requirements

Based on the topics and program sequence prepared, take time to proofread, compile and print all
the seminar materials on a per-topic basis at least one (1) week before the actual event, ready for
distribution! A technical rehearsal will also be perform to make sure all the speakers’ visual
presentations (if any) have been tested and given a quick run through prior to the event. Just to
make sure that all the files are compatible with the equipment being used and that all the equipment
are in optimum condition.

3.2. Schedule one final production meeting before the actual event
Once all the details are in place, schedule a production meeting with the entire team, suppliers and
speakers included, to ensure a smooth-flowing (if not stress-free) seminar!
