Promoting Health and Fitness: Strategies for Government Intervention

We often hear about the lack of care this country has for its citizens' health. However, less
often do we hear concrete suggestions for how to improve the government’s involvement. In
this essay, I will discuss two possible actions that our government could focus on in order to
promote health and fitness today.

The first of these is to launch educational campaigns, targeting the prevalent issue of
unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles ingrained in Mexican culture. Raising
awareness is the first step to change. Although some people may say that these campaigns
could be seen as intrusive or unnecessary, it is undeniable that through these campaigns the
government empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

Another measure the government could take is the regulation of food costs. Ensuring that
citizens have affordable access to nutritious food options is essential for combating bad
eating habits. Currently, high prices of healthier food products can force people to buy
cheaper but less nutritious alternatives. Some may argue that these regulations interfere
with free market principles, but we should recognize that public health far outweighs
market-driven considerations.

Considering both approaches, either one would be a step in the right direction. However, I
believe it would be wise to prioritize educational campaigns as the first strategy. Raising
awareness and educating individuals about unhealthy habits are crucial steps in promoting
health improvement. By emphasizing this approach, we lay the groundwork for a healthier
future.
