2024 NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH CELEBRATION

ACTIVITY PROPOSAL

I. TITLE: 2024 NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH CELEBRATION

II. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COVERED:

Republic Act No. 6949, s. 1990: Act to declare March eight of every year as a working
special holiday to be known as National Women's Day.
DepEd Order 32, s. 2017: Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy which aimed to
integrate the principles of gender equality, gender equity, gender sensitivity, non-
discrimination and human rights in basic education.
Memorandum Circular No. 2023-01, titled Guide for the 2022 National Women’s
Month Celebration
III. BACKGROUND/RATIONALE

The United Nations officially designated March 8th as a day to honor women's
contributions worldwide, prompting the Philippines to establish its National Women’s
Month Celebration. This serves as a platform to showcase women's achievements and
address issues concerning their empowerment and gender equality. Further reinforcing
this commitment, R.A. 6949 s. 1990 declared March 8th as National Women’s Day,
encouraging participation in activities promoting gender equality and women's
empowerment. Together, these initiatives highlight the Philippines' dedication to
acknowledging and advancing women's rights and contributions, rooted in the historical
legacy of International Women’s Day.
In the Philippines, the Philippine Commission on Women sets the 2024 National
Women’s Month Celebration aims to capitalize on the recurring theme “WE for gender
equality and inclusive society,” introduced in 2023. This theme, launched to renew
commitment to the advocacy, builds upon the accomplishments under the 2016-2022
theme, “WE Make CHANGE Work for Women.” The earlier theme stressed the
importance of compassionate and harmonized networks towards gender equality and
women’s empowerment (GEWE).
The annual campaign's banner serves as both a positive affirmation and a call to
action, symbolizing progress in closing gender gaps in the Philippines while rallying
further support for the cause. According to the 2023 Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI)
Republic of the Philippines

Report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Philippines maintains its status as the
leading Asian country in narrowing the gender gap, achieving 79.1 percent gender
parity and securing the 16th position globally—a three-place rise from its previous
ranking. In the East Asia and the Pacific region, it ranks second, only behind New
Zealand, marking its prominence as the sole Asian nation in the top twenty. This aligns
with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which emphasizes deep economic
and social transformation for inclusive growth, aiming to provide equal opportunities and
skills for all Filipinos to participate in a competitive economy.
