CHAPTER – 1
INTRODUCTION

When a customer makes a purchase, they expect value from that exchange. Think about what you
ate for breakfast today. You paid money to receive a product that satisfied your hunger. Is that all
the value you received? Perhaps not. If you ate eggs, bacon, and coffee at a restaurant, you had
both a product and a service experience. Maybe someone at the restaurant handed you a menu,
took your order, brought your food, refilled your coffee, cleaned up dishes, and collected payment
for your meal. The eggs, bacon, and coffee were the product, while the acts of the restaurant staff
were a service. And the summation of it all was the product–service experience.
Products are tangible items that are part of an exchange between a buyer and seller. Products can
be seen, touched, owned, and stored. For example, the computer or tablet you’re using to read this
textbook is a product. You may have visited a store to see and touch the product before purchasing
to ensure it met your needs. Post-purchase, the computer or tablet is yours to own and store for
later use as you please. The tangible nature of the product allows the consumer to possess it.
Services are intangible solutions that are also an exchange between buyer and seller. Unlike
products, services cannot be touched, owned, or stored for later use. For example, a college course
on marketing is a service. Students cannot own the course; they cannot store it for later, nor will
they have a tangible object representing the course. Another defining feature of a service is the
customer is typically a part of the service experience. Imagine buying tickets to your favorite band
in concert. You will have to attend the concert to realize the full benefit of the service experience.

Types of Products

Products are broadly classified into two categories – consumer products and industrial products.

Consumer products
Consumer products are products that the ultimate consumer purchases himself for direct use. The
consumer purchases these consumer products to satisfy his personal needs and desires. Some
examples of consumer products are toothpaste, eatables, textiles, computers etc and various such
products.
Now there are many types of consumer products as well. Let us take at the classification of
consumer goods based on the shopping effort involved:
Convenience Products: These are consumer goods that are very convenient to purchase. They are
bought frequently and with very little effort. Examples include medicines, toiletries, newspapers
etc. Such convenience products have ongoing and continuous demand. Such goods are also bought
in small quantities and are also generally lowly priced.

Shopping Products: To shop for these consumer products, consumers devote considerable time
and effort. They compare prices and features and a lot of thought is involved before making the
decision to buy. Some such examples are electronics, furniture, jewelry etc. These products
generally fall in the higher price range. Such products are pre-planned purchases.

Specialty Products: For specialty products, consumers make special efforts to buy them. They
are not your regular run of the mill consumer products. The buyer is willing to go through a lot of
effort to purchase such products. Take for example any artwork, paintings, sculptures etc. The
demand for such specialty products is usually pretty limited and the prices are high.

Industrial Products
These are products which are used as input for manufacturing other products. Unlike consumer
goods, these are not for direct consumption. These are meant for business and non-personal use.
Some examples of industrial products are raw materials, machines, tools etc.

Here the demand for industrial products is limited. Since they are not consumer goods the demand
for them is not vast. The three broad categories of Industrial goods are as follows

Machine and Machine Parts: These goods are used entirely in the manufacturing process. These
include raw materials like cotton, lumber, petroleum etc. They also include manufactured products
like glass, rubber etc.
Capital items: These are goods/products used to manufacture finished goods. They include
installations (lifts, mainframe computers etc) and equipment (hand tools, personal computers etc).
Business Services and Supplies: These are industrial goods and services that facilitate the
manufacturing process. They include services such as painters, technicians, maintenance, and
repairs. And products such as lubricants, stationary etc.
BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Smart Helmet Project is a project is a project on how to make the proper helmet wearing Can be
compulsory implemented to all Indian citizen by developing a connection Between the motorcycle
helmet and the motorcycle. This project consist of study of fatal Road accident and causes which
involving motorcyclist, study on creating connection Between motorcycle and helmet by using RF
module, and developing a prototype on Smart Helmet itself. Helmet been created for the daily use
when riding motorcycle in Order to protect human or user head from seriously injured when
accident happen. A Quality helmets are made of a combination of fibers, glass and carbon on the
outer shell And special polystyrene foam with fire-retardant lining on the inside to help absorb
Impact and prevent burns.. Before a quality helmet being sold to the motorcyclist, this Helmet will
be going for various types of inspections to make sure it is very safe and Comfort to be used by
the end user.
This Smart Helmet project was initiated especially to focus on connecting the helmet With the
motorcycle by using a connection device or in specifically by using an RF Module. This project is
design to uncompromising the proper helmet usage among the Motorcyclist. As we know, the
improper helmet usage will cause a serious bad injury to The head of motorcyclist when an
accident happens to them. It show that the Motorcyclists as a focus group have the highest fatality
and serious injury when the Proper helmet wearing not implemented because their head will
directly expose to the Hazard when the helmet pull out from their head. With this Smart Helmet,
the user will Not be able to start their motorcycle if they are not wearing helmet tidily. The system
of The smart helmet itself been computerized to make sure that the helmet must be neatly Clipped
before the user can start the ignition of their motorcycle.

The Smart Helmet also works as a medium or tool to make the motorcycle safe from Being stolen
by motorcycle thieves. This is because, by having the uniquely connection Between motorcycle
and helmet, the helmet will be created specifically unique to the Owner of the motorcycle and
specific motorcycle only can be use by user who have the Specifically connected helmet. By
having this function, the motorcycle owner can happily Do their other job by reducing their mind
on thinking of their motorcycle security.

CHAPTER – 2
INNOVATION IN PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Product innovation is the introduction of either a new product or an existing product with
significant improvements related to its characteristics. Improvements could be in various
specifications and areas such as technical, technological, physical use, software updates, overall
size and texture, and so on. For instance, consider the Apple Watch; they release different series
every year with significant updates and improvements such as using cellular technology,
monitoring your heart rate, acting as your fitness partner, measuring blood oxygen level, and so
on. We see the addition of features in every series, and these improvements make them a different
product altogether.

Introduction to innovation in products and services

In recent times helmets have been made compulsory in Telangana State. Traffic accidents in India
have been Increased every year. As per Section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, every single
person riding a two-wheeler is required to wear protective headgear following The standards of
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Also Drunken driving under the influence (DUI) is a criminal
Offence according to the Motor Vehicle act 1939, which States that the bike rider will get
punishment. Currently Bike riders easily escape from the law. These are the Three main issues
which motivates us for developing this Project.
The first step Is to identify whether the helmet is worn or not. If helmet is worn then ignition will
start otherwise it remains off. For this, Force Sensing Sensor (FSR) sensor is used.
The second step is alcohol detection[2]. Alcohol sensor is used as breath analyzer which detects
the presence of alcohol in rider’s breath and if it exceeds permissible limit ignition cannot start. It
will send message to the number saying that “Rider is drunk and is trying to ride the bike”. MQ-3
sensor is used for this purpose. When these two conditions are satisfied then only ignition starts.
The third main issue is accident and late medical help. If the rider has met with an accident, he
may not receive medical help instantly, which is one of the main reasons for death. Every second
people dies due to delay in medical help, or in the case where the place of accident is unmanned.
In fall detection, we place accelerometer in the bike unit. By this mechanism accidents can be
detected.

Design and Realizations

A smart helmet is designed using Arduino with transmitter (fig a). If alcohol concentration is
present in human Breath, then it displays the message on LCD and it sends The SMS to register
no. with their current location(fig b). If accident occurs and bike falls, then it Displays the message
on LCD and sends an SMS to the Registered numbered with the current geographical Location.
CHAPTER – 3
TECHNICAL DESIGN TO MAKING THE PRODUCT

1. Force Sensing Resistor (FSR)

Force Sensing Resistor is placed inside the Helmet, where the actual human touch is sensed. It is
Determined by the helmet unit whether it is worn or not Before starting the bike. If this condition
is satisfied, then It sends the signal to bike unit to starting. Force Sensing Resistors or FSRs are
strong polymer thick film (PTF) Devices whose resistance is inversely proportional to force
Applied to the face of the sensor. This sensor is used as human touch control in various
Applications, such as medical systems, automotive Electronics and in robotics and industrial
applications. Force sensing resistor is a two-wire sensor with a Resistance that changes on applied
force.
2. MQ-3 Alcohol Sensor

MQ-3 gas sensor shown is used for identifying The alcohol content from breath. It can be
positioned just In front of the mouth. The sensor responds to various Molecules in alcohol and
determines if the rider is drunk. The sensor also has a potentiometer to adjust the Concentration of
gases. We calibrate the detector for 0.4mg/L of alcohol concentration in air and use a Resistance
of 200 KΩ. It has a 4 pins namely GND, VCC, A out and D out. The sensor supports both analog
and Digital outputs. Here we use digital output of this sensors.
3. Accelerometer ADXL345

The ADXL345 is a tinny, tri-axial Accelerometer with resolution of 13 bit. The output of
Accelerometer is digital and uses 16 bit 2’s complement Data. It can be connected via Serial
Peripheral Interface (SPI 3-4 wire) or I2C interface. ADXL345 is used for both Measurement of
static and dynamic acceleration. In this Project we use accelerometer, which measures the static
Acceleration of gravity. Free-fall sensing unit senses if the Bike is falling. And Bike unit take
decision that accident is Occurred or not.
4. RF Communication Circuit

An RF transmitter module is a small PCB subassembly capable of transmitting radio waves and
Modulating radio wave to carry data. Transmitter modules are usually implemented alongside A
microcontroller which will provide data to the module That can be transmitted. RF transmitters are
usually subject To regulatory requirements which dictate the maximum Allowable transmitter
power output, harmonics and band Edge requirements.
An RF receiver module receives the modulated RF Signal and demodulates it. There are two
modules, such as, Super-heterodyne receiver and super-regenerative Receiver. Super-regenerative
modules are usually low cost And low power designs using a series of amplifiers to Extract
modulated data from a carrier wave. Super regenerative modules are generally imprecise as their
Frequency of operation varies considerably with Temperature and power supply voltage. Super-
heterodyne Receivers have a performance advantage over super regenerative; i.e. they offer
increased accuracy and Stability over a large voltage and temperature range. This Stability comes
from a fixed crystal design which in the Past intended to mean a comparatively more expensive
Product. However, advances in receiver chip design now Mean that currently there is little price
difference between Super-heterodyne and super-regenerative receiver Modules.
5. Vibration sensor

Digital vibration sensor ( DFR0027) is a digital Plug and Play sensor block. It has vibration
switch, digital Input module and dedicated sensor expansion boards with The Arduino in
combination. It can sense the weak Vibration signals. When the accident occurs, it senses the
Pressure and sends it to the Arduino which in turn it sends The message to the registered mobile
number.
