ME8692 – Finite Element Analysis
PART A (Answer any five) 5×2=10 marks
1. Define shape function. State its characteristics.
2. Write the finite element equation for one dimensional heat conduction with free end
convection.
3. Write down the expression of longitudinal vibration of bar element.
4. Differentiate CST and LST elements.
5. Write the displacement function for CST element.
6. What meant by plane stress analysis?
7. Write the strain displacement relation for CST element and explain its terms.
8. Define plane strain analysis.
PART B 40 marks
1. A steel bar of length 800 mm is subjected to an axial load of 3 KN as shown in figure.
Find the elongation of the bar neglecting self-weight. (13)

2. A tapered bar is having a length of 100 cm. Area of cross section in fixed end is 3 cm 2
and the free end is 2 cm2 with the variation of the sectional area as linear. The bar is
subjected to an axial load of 50 N at the smaller end. Calculate the maximum
displacement & stress developed in the bar. Young’s modulus = 2 x 105 N/mm2 (13)

3. A wall of 0.6m thickness having thermal conductivity of 1.2 W/mK. The wall is to be
insulated with a material of thickness 0.06m having an average thermal conductivity of
0.3 W/mK. The inner surface temperature in 1000 OC and outside of the insulation is
exposed to atmospheric air at 30oC with heat transfer co-efficient of 35 W/m2K.
Calculate the nodal temperature.

(13)
4. Consider the simply supported beam shown in fig. let the length L = 1m, E=2×10 11𝑵/
𝒎𝟐, area of cross section A=30cm2, moment of inertia I=100mm4, density[ρ] =
7800𝑲𝒈/𝒎𝟑. Determine the natural frequency using two types of mass matrix. Lumped
mass matrix and consistent mass matrix.

(14)
5. For the plane stress element shown in Fig, the nodal displacements are: u1=2.0mm;
v1=1.0mm;u2=0.5mm; v2=0.0mm;u3=3.0mm; v3=1.0mm. Determine the element stresses
σx, σy, σ1, and σ2 and the principal angle θp.
let E=210 GPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.25 and

t=10 mm. All coordinates are in millimetre.
