GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE 202201.v.1

ASSIGNMENT 01 – SKETCHUP PROJECT

________________________________________________________________________________

OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

The first course assignment, Assignment 01, incorporates all topics covered throughout the
first 3 SketchUp lessons of the course into creating a preliminary 3D model design.

REQUIREMENTS

An Animal House is to be schematically designed with spaces provided for a “pocket pet”
family.

*We will not be designing the interior layout/spaces for this assignment.

The house is to be comprised of four (4) “living” spaces/volumes. The volumes must be
physically connected either directly or with enclosed “walkways.” A minimum of 4
different “primitive” volume types (Box, Cylinder, Pyramid, Cone, Sphere, etc.) must
be used, at least one of which must be curved.

Assume a scale of approximately 10% of a human house. A large human space (in
plan) may be 5m x 5m. So, the Animal House would have an equivalent (scaled) size
of 50cm x 50cm.

Any single volume should not have any exterior dimension greater than 80cm or less
than 30cm.

All walls and floors must be 1cm in thickness for any space/volume.

The house may have more than one level and must have an appropriate fitting roof for
each volume and/or the whole house. Roofs do not count as “living” volumes but count
as part of the living space they cover.

Each non-curved living space/volume must contain a minimum of 2 openings (1 door +

1 window, 2 windows, 2 doors, etc.).

You may arrange the volumes into any configuration of your choosing. They may be
side-by-side, end-to-end, or stacked. If they are stacked, they do not need to be
aligned with each other, just connected in some way. If they are not directly connected,
they must be connected in a way that allows passage between volumes. No volumes
can be unconnected to the others. Spaces that are sitting on ground level (elevated off
the ground) should have a believable structural support(s).

GRADING CRITERIA

The grade total value is comprised of the following aspects. They are not necessarily of
equal weight for grading.

• Overall model completion.

• Complete and extensive use of Components and Groups:
*Model elements must be separated and organized. Living volumes, walls,
doors, windows, roofs, etc., should be separate groups/components from
each other and nested in their respective Living volume group or
component.
• Screenshot(s) of expanded “Outliner” list showing Components & Groups in model.
• Use of Tags to organize Living volumes (at least one Tag per volume).
• Saved Views: 1 Overall Perspective, Plan(s), Front Elevation and 1 Side Elevation.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Create a single multi-page pdf, which must include all images of your “Saved Views” AND
screenshot(s) of the Tags and Outliner palettes showing ALL components/ groups in your
model.

Assignment 01 is to be submitted via Blackboard as a single multi-page PDF file.

*Note: you may include your SketchUp file, but it is NOT required.

The assignment must be named in the exact format illustrated as follows:

LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_ASSIGNMENT_01.pdf
(example: SMITH_JAMIE_ASSIGNMENT_01.pdf)

Failure to name the submitted file exactly as demonstrated above will result in a
deduction of 20% of the total grade of the assignment.

DUE DATE(S)

Assignments are to be submitted no later than 11:59pm, the day before your WEEK 6
lecture day.

Deductions for late submissions:

• 25% reduction in grade if submitted between 0 to 24 hours after the original deadline.
• 50% reduction in grade if submitted between 24 to 48 hours after the original deadline.
• 75% reduction in grade if submitted 2 days (up to 7days) after the original deadline.

GRADING

Assignment 01 is worth 20% of the total course grade.
