COURSE DESCRIPTION
A specialized professional course for civil engineering students in structural
engineering designed to understand the concepts, theories, and principles in the design
process of bridge structures.

Course Project
WHO?
A group of students with a maximum of 3 members in the same class.
WHAT?
Each group of students will select one (1) bridge that have failed, collapsed, or demolished due to
failure (demolished due to old age are not allowed) from the year 1980 to 2024. The selected bridge will be
proposed first and must be approved by the instructor. Once approved, the students shall submit a research
report in writing and shall be presented on the final term. Students are allowed (but not required) to provide an
unscaled miniature during the presentation.
HOW?
The research report shall include the history, types of materials used, age, cause of failure, pictures,
explanation, etc. of the selected bridge.
The written report shall be in the following format: The format for the verbal presentation shall

CRITERIA FOR GRADING: WHEN?


Written Report: Verbal Presentation: 1. Topic Proposal shall be until the scheduled

Rules & Regulations of this Course
1. This course allows 10 hours (3 meetings) of absences for a 3-unit class during the
semester. Only letters seeking excuses for medical reasons, work reasons, death
or burial of immediate family members or relatives living in the same household
are to acceptable. ABSENCES DUE TO PERSONAL VACATIONS ARE NOT
CONSIDERED AS VALID EXCUSE. Students whom have more than 3

absences will be subject to unauthorized withdrawal (UW).
2. Activities such as quiz and exams that were missed by the students with VALID
absences shall be given on the next meeting he/she/them will be present.
3. Activities such as quiz and exams that were missed by the students WITHOUT
VALID EXCUSE shall receive a grade of 70% for the missed activity. If the
student were to ask for permission to be absent without valid reason 2 meetings
before, I will allow the student to take a special exam a week before the exam
date with a maximum grade of 90%.
4. 30 minutes of break shall be given to the students per meeting.

5. Students are allowed to eat any food during lecture. However, foods that
creates too much noise and are prone to distraction are not allowed and
may be subject for a warning.
6. Sleeping during class is highly discouraged but not forbidden.

RULES & REGULATIONS


7. Students that causes any form of intentional/ unintentional distractions
during lectures will not be tolerated. More than one (1) warning may lead
to the expulsion of the student from the current lecture.
8. Students who will be caught cheating during an activity will have a grade
of 0% for the said activity and a warning will be issued. Students who will
receive two (2) warnings, from the entire semester, due to cheating will be
sent to the Dean’s Office.
9. Students with questions about the lecture may ask their question after the
lecture.
