Motive Question story “Hyde Park” by Petina
Gappah, I have prepared a question
for you to answer.

Are you ready, class?

Kindly read the question please. Yes, Ma’am!

Please take note of the question for What are the themes of the story?
you will answer it later after
reading the selection.

4. Reading the But before we proceed to reading Okay, Ma’am!

Story let us first investigate the author’s
background to fully understand the

9
story.

Pettina Gappah was born in 1971

in Zambia, a country located in
East Africa. She is a Zimbabwean
lawyer and an author who
graduated in various universities
such as University of Zimbabwe,
Graz University, and Cambridge. She
is also the one who wrote the short
story of Hyde Park and books such as
The Book of Memory, Rotten Row,
Now that you finally know the An Elegy for Easterly, and many
author’s background, let’s have a more.
brief background of the story.

The short story of Hyde Park is

about the bizarre and wonderful
experience of the author and the
main character, Petina Gappah
during the summer of 1997, as she
strolls around the beauty of Hyde
Park in London. The city of
London never failed Petina in
giving wonderful vibes as she
arrived since it is one of the places
that she only saw in books and on
television when she was young.
The nice greeting changed her
perception in London as if she was
given a warm welcome inside the
bus despite the bus driver’s tone
and appearance. As she looked
around her view, she became glad
that many cities look at London as
their ideal city since it is very
different in terms of the view and
the citizens’ behavior. Petina’s
wonderful experience resulted in
her going back to London several
times since it made her feel at
home.

10
Alright! Class did you understand
the story?

5. Answering the Yes, Ma’am.

Motive Question
Okay, going back to the questions
given to you earlier. What could be
the possible themes of the story?

Anyone from the class who wants

to answer? Yes, Ms. /Mr.________.

6. Comprehension
I think the themes of the story are
acceptance and equality.
And why do you think so?

It’s because in this short story of

Petina Gappah, a Zimbabwean author
who has an African appearance, her
experience was different since the
people did not discriminate her despite
of her looks. The citizens of London
even respected her by greeting her in a
nice way just like what they do to
others. This short story talks about that
not all people are racist.

Indeed! That’s correct! Thank you

for sharing us your thoughts. Let’s
give him/her a pabebe clap!

(the students clapped)

One of the main theme of the story
“Hyde Park” that you must
remember is about equality wherein
people accepts you for who you are
regardless of your race and
apperance.
7. Discussion

Now, let us delve with our

discussion. What was again our
lesson for today?
11
Adverbs, Ma’am!
Yes! Our lesson for today is all
about, Using adverbs in narration.

ADVERBS

In English language, adverbs are

words that provide a deeper
meaning or description of a verb
within any sentence.

So, in simpler term adverb is a

word or phrase that modifies or
qualifies an adjective, verb, or other
adverb.

For example,
in the sentence “Don't drive fast,”
the word “fast” is an adverb
because it's modifying the verb
“drive.”

Did you understand class?

Yes, Ma’am!

For you to easily identify and fully

understand what adverb is, let us
tackle the 4 basic types of adverb.

However, as we continue our

discussion, I'll be utilizing this
example table, which shows four
types of adverbs and has blank
columns for you to determine the
meaning of each and provide some
examples that support the category
to which each adverb belongs.

12
May I call on Ms._________.
Please answer number one. You
will choose one meaning and two
examples to stick on the blank
columns beside the adverb of time.

Okay, Ma’am.

How about for adverb of place,

manner and frequency? Who wants
to join Ms._______ infront and try
to fill in the blank columns.
(Students raised their hands)

Okay, you may answer infront.

(Students finished their task)

Alright! Let us see if all your

answers are correct!

First is the Adverb of Time,

As the name suggests, the adverbs

of time are used to tell the reader
when some action is done. We can
identify an adverb of time by
asking the question ‘when’.

Some examples of adverbs of time

are yesterday, already, always,
last month, tomorrow, etc.

Second on the list is the

Adverb of Place,

These adverbs are used to indicate

where the action is done. Adverbs
of place can be identified by asking
the question ‘where’.

Some examples of adverbs of place

are in the table, here, outside,
under the tree, etc.

Third is the;
Adverb of Degree/Manner

13
These adverbs are used to indicate
how intense an action of quality
is. The adverbs of Manner can be
recognized by asking the question
‘how something is done’.

Some examples of adverbs of

manner are quite, almost, nearly,
too, neatly, etc.

Last on the list is the,

Adverb of Frequency

These adverbs are used to denote

how often an action or event is
happening. The adverbs of
frequency can be recognized by
asking the question ‘how often’.

Some examples of adverbs of

frequency are never, sometimes,
twice a day, all the time, etc.

Okay class, now that you know the

differences of the four types of
adverbs, do you think their answers
on the table are correct?

Very good! At this point then who Yes, Ma’am.

among you can give me an example
sentence using Adverb of Time?

Possible answer:

 She finished all her workloads

Do you have any questions

regarding adverbs?

understood our lesson very well.
8. Presentation of
Rubric We can now proceed to our group
14
activity entitled “Write me up.” But
before that, I want to give you the
rubrics to follow for this activity.
Please read, everyone.

 Content- 20 points
 Neatness – 10 points
 Cooperation-10 points
 Delivery - 10 points
Total of 50 points
9. Group Activity
Since you already have your
respective groups, may I ask one
representative per group to get the
materials you will be using here in
front. I know that it will be very
easy for you to finish this task
because it was quiet similar from
the activity that we’ve done a while
back, but this time you will do it by
group.
Okay, Ma’am.

And we’ll see whether you will

make the best out of it, like what
the saying goes “two heads are
better than one.” Right?

What you are going to do is that

from the list of words that I will be
posting infront, you will categorize
these words into the types or
categories of adverbs. Then you
will choose two words for each
category and use it in a sentence.
Each group will be given a manila
paper and a marker to write their
answers and you will post it on the
board. Then you will choose a
representative to report your
answers. I will give you ten
minutes to work on your task.

Is my instruction clear?

Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, please do your activity

quietly.

Time is up! Please prepare for your

report group 1 first and then

15
followed by the other groups.

You may start. Group 1 will present their report.

excellent report. Lets give them a

Around of applause for them
please. (students clapped their hands)

to all of you, your reports are all
beyond my expectation. You did
very well. And because you put so
much effort with your report, I
think you all deserve an almost Thank you, ma’am!
perfect score as a reward.

Give yourselves a clap, class. Good

10. Valuing job!

Adverbs are important since they

are the component of the sentence
that gives our writing more
information and detail, which
makes them important in both
narration and daily life. Adverbs
are like the taste buds of a person,
without it we can never know the
real flavor of our food, same with
adverbs it can encourage the reader
to visualize the action, the
characters' feelings, and their
