DOWN SYNDROME
A genetic disorder that causes delays in physical and
intellectual development.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is

born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This means that
they have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This can
affect how their brain and body develop. People diagnosed
with Down syndrome have happy and healthy lives with
supportive care.

CAUSE OF DOWN
SYNDROME
Down syndrome is caused by a
random error in cell division that
results in the presence of an extra
copy of chromosome 21. The type of
error is called nondisjunction.

when abnormal cell division

involving chromosome 21 occurs.

EFFECT OF DOWN
SYNDROME
Symptoms associated with the
syndrome include mental retardation,
distinctive facial characteristics,
and increased risk for heart defects
and digestive problems, which can
range from mild to severe.

CHROMOSOMES
IN DOWN
SYNDROME

In most cases of Down syndrome, a child gets an extra chromosome

21 — for a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. Rarely, the extra
chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome. This extra genetic
material causes the physical features and developmental delays in
people with Down syndrome.

EFFECTS OF CELL CYCLE IN DOWN SYNDROME

Nondisjunction results in an embryo with three copies

of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. Prior to or at
conception, a pair of 21st chromosomes in either the sperm
or the egg fails to separate.

Down syndrome is caused by a random error in cell

division that results in the presence of an extra copy of
chromosome 21. The type of error is called nondisjunction

DOWN SYNDROME FACTS

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal
condition.
Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels.
The incidence of births of children with Down syndrome increases
with the age of the mother.
People with Down syndrome attend school, work; participate in
decisions that affect them, and contribute to society in many
ways.
Down syndrome is also known as Trisomy 21.

Can be detected in a fetus by amniocentesis or chorionic villi

sampling
People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain
medical conditions.
