In 2023 solve the problems with ☺.
1. ☺ ♦ SI Units - A rectangular channel is 4m wide and 2.5m deep. The water level in the
channel is 1.75m deep and is flowing at a rate of 21 m3/s. Determine the cross-section
area, the wetted perimeter, and the hydraulic radius. Is the flow laminar or turbulent?
2. ♦ English Units - A trapezoidal section has a 5.0 ft base width, 2.5 ft depth, and 1:1 side

3. ☺ ♦♦ English Units - Consider the geometry of the channel sketched below and develop a
spreadsheet to calculate the cross-section area and wetted perimeter as a function of flow
depth. Calculate every 4” until a maximum stage elevation of 10 ft. Determine the

6. ♦ English Units - A trapezoidal channel has a bed width of 10 ft and side slope 2H:1V.

Part B) Your first meeting with Jill went very well for you
and upon return from travel, Jan asks whether you considered the energy cost for your project. Well, I guess you
didn’t. The energy cost adjusted for inflation is assumed constant at ~10 cents per kilowatt-hour. Can you redo
your analysis for each pipe diameter, plot the total cost of your project over a period of 50 years? Meanwhile, Jill
Second meeting with your client – Jill is all excited about what you said in your first meeting and she finds the
project reasonably priced and affordable for her District. She tells you that her very good friend Jack (a local
entrepreneur selling pipes in your City) can supply 5,500 ft of 6” diameter pipe at $15/ft with a 50% discount on
the purchase of any suitable pump. This looks like a super deal for the District. Jack also told Jill that the best
solution would be for you to design a system with two parallel pipelines. In cutting the discharge in half, he said
that your energy costs would drop a lot. Conduct your analysis to find out whether Jack’s super deal is so great.
Prepare a revised 2-p. summary of your analysis. Make your recommendation in a 2-page summary to Jill.
Remember that communication skills are very important! (keep your 2-page summary for possible questions
10. ☺ ♦♦♦ SI Units - Design Problem A concrete-lined canal having one side vertical and
other side is sloping at 2H:1V. The canal carries a steady discharge of 10 m3/s with n =
0.014 and velocity not exceeding 0.715 m/s. Design the dimensions and the bed slope of
the canal to minimize the construction per unit length of 100m. The excavation cost is
2.0$/m3 and the cost of lining is 6.0 $/m2.
Assume that the canal water surface must be
maintained at an elevation of 0.5 m above the
land surface. [Hint: first define the cost as a
function of width b and depth y, then replace b as
a function of y. Plot the cost as a function of y
and find the minimum.]. Your answer should
delineate your problem formulation, assumptions,
methods, accuracy and presentation.
