QUESTION 1 (40 MARKS)

1.1 Figure 1.1 shows a sinusoidal voltage waveform displayed on an oscilloscope.


The horizontal sensitivity is 1 ms/cm and the vertical sensitivity is 2V/cm.

(a) Calculate the period T, frequency f and angular frequency ω of the waveform.
(b) Calculate the peak and peak-to-peak values of the waveform.
(c) Write the sinusoidal expression of the waveform if it is taken as the reference.
(d) Find the instantaneous value of the voltage at t = 0.2 ms.

1.2 Refer to the circuit shown in Figure 1.2.

2.1 Refer to the circuit shown in Figure 2.1.

(a) Calculate the currents 𝐼 ,̅ 𝐼̅𝑅 and 𝐼̅𝐿 in polar form.


(b) Calculate the total impedance 𝑍 ̅̅̅
𝑇 of the circuit in polar form.
(c) If the frequency is 60 Hz, determine the angular frequency ω and period T.
(d) Write the sinusoidal expressions of the supply voltage and current.
(e) Draw two cycles of the supply voltage and current waveforms on the same
axes. Indicate clearly the peak values, period and phase difference between
the two waveforms.
(f) If the frequency is now 120 Hz, what is the new total impedance of the circuit?

2.2 Refer to Figure 2.2. If 𝐼̅𝑅 = 1∠0° A, find 𝑉̅ , 𝐼̅𝐶 and the total impedance ̅̅̅

3.1 Determine the period T, frequency f and average value of the voltage waveform
shown in Figure 3.1.

𝑣𝑆 (𝑡) = 100 sin(377𝑡 + 30°) V
𝑖𝑆 (𝑡) = 200 sin(377𝑡 − 10°) mA
𝑖2 (𝑡) = 100 sin(377𝑡 + 20°) mA
