1 AIM

The aim of this report is to describe all the detailed calculations that have been carried out to

design preliminary a circular tapered foundation with anchor cage interface for a GE6.1-158

HH121m IEC Class S for some Wind Farms in Aragón (Spain).

2 SCOPE

The scope is the description of all the necessary inputs, the verifications taken into account, its

results and a resume of the safety factors obtained for each requirement.

3 INPUT DATA

3.1 GEOTECHNICAL PARAMETERS

The foundation has been design for the following geotechnical parameters, according to reference

0:

 *Minimum soil bearing capacity: 135 KPa (safety factor applied 3)

 Minimum static elastic modulus of the soil: 45 MPa

 Poisson´s coefficient: μ=0.35

 Kdyn,lim: 1.50E11 Nm/rad

 Kest,lim: 3.00E10 Nm/rad

 Refill dry density: 18 kN/m3

 Friction angle: 30º

 Excavation slope: 1H:1V

 Buoyancy: No

 Seismic hazard risk: No

 Exposure class: No

* If a wind turbine has its foundation on a slope or near slope, the effect of the proximity of the

foundation to a slope indicated in the regulations or reference guides, will be taken into account in

the calculation of the soil bearing capacity. In the case of very steep slopes, regardless of the soil

bearing capacity value of the terrain, the calculation of the safety against global stability shall be

carried out.

4.1 LOAD CASES APPLICATION

As the slab is about a circular shape, load case with forces acting on a direction at 45 degrees from

the side of the foundation (diagonal case) has not been taken into account, because it is the same

case as the one considered.

4.2 FOUNDATION DIMENSIONS

The following pictures show the selected dimensions for the design of this foundation in

millimeters, taking into account reference [2].

Figure 4-2 Foundation Main Dimensions

Figure 4-3 Foundation main dimensions – 3D view

NOTE:

This design is valid for a covered up foundation, at a foundation level of -3.01m below

natural ground level to below to the lower level of the blinding concrete. In case of

executing a partial cover and/or with different foundation level, it must be studied the

support conditions and determinate the validity of the foundation, and specify the

situation and execution of the refill over it.

It has been considered 2% of slope in the filling material.

Verification through FEM:

The following image shows Z displacements of the foundation in meters.

Figure 5-1 Z displacements under unfactored shear failure loads (m)

Maximum Z displacement of the foundation is 0.034788 m, so maximum soil stress (σ) taking into

account ballast modulus (Ks) is the following:

Pmax  KS  z  4.65MN / m3  0.034788m  0.162MPa

And the safety factor is:

SF    1.04
Pmax 0.162

Therefore the condition for soil bearing capacity is OK.

Condition 2: This verification has been made taking into account factored shear failure loads and

applying a safety factor of 2 to the soil bearing capacity. The safety factor must be greater than 1.
Analytical verification:

Figure 5-2 Z displacements under factored shear failure loads (m)

Maximum Z displacement of the foundation is 0.040431 m, so maximum soil stress (σ) taking into

The safety factor is greater than 1, so the condition for soil bearing capacity is OK.

5.2.2 SETTLEMENTS

This verification has been made considering extreme loads and dead loads without safety factors

applied. Maximum relative settlement of 3mm is permitted to avoid excessive displacements at

upper flange of the interface.

Verification through FEM:

The following image shows Z displacements of the foundation in meters under unfactored extreme

abnormal loads.

Figure 5-3 Z displacements under unfactored extreme abnormal loads (m)

Relative settlement is 39.59 mm, and a maximum relative settlement of 73.20 mm

(24.40·3mm/m=73.20 mm) is permitted to avoid too high displacements at upper flange of the

interface.

Therefore the condition for settlement is OK.
