Unveiling the Chemistry of

the Fire Snake: A

Spectacular Combustion
Reaction

[Aiden]:
Introduction: The Fire Snake, also known as
the Black Snake or Sugar Snake, is a
captivating chemical reaction that
showcases the transformation of a simple
mixture into an awe-inspiring spectacle of
dark, snake-like structures emerging from a
seemingly ordinary pile of white powder. This
project aims to delve into the science behind
this mesmerizing reaction and provide a
detailed explanation.
Materials:
Sand
Alcohol
Baking soda
Sugar
Lighter
[Eric]:
Preparation:
1. fill a plate with sand
2. DOUSE THE SAND WITH THE
ALCOHOL
3. Mix 1 table spoon of baking soda with
4 table spoons of sugar
4. Pour it on top of the sand
5. Ignite the alcohol
Observation:
As the mixture ignites, it undergoes a
chemical reaction. The sugar decomposes
into carbon (in the form of a snake-like
structure) and water vapor. The baking
soda serves as a chemical catalyst, aiding
in this decomposition. The sand helps
support the snake-like structure.

The scientific explanation for this is that

when the sugar and baking soda mixture is
heated, the sugar undergoes a thermal
decomposition, breaking down into carbon
and water vapor. The baking soda helps
catalyse this reaction by releasing carbon
dioxide gas, which aids in the formation of
the snake-like carbon structure. As the
carbon forms, it gets trapped in the
remaining sugar, creating the dark, snake-
like appearance.

[Muhammad]:

In conclusion, the Fire Snake is a captivating

demonstration of chemistry in action. This
project provides a deeper understanding of
the scientific principles behind this
fascinating reaction.
