Do we really need to sleep?

A
So is sleeping a waste of time? Well, even Dr Meddis does not deny the great psychological value of sleep,
and he asks us, „if scientists invented a pill which, if you took it, would keep you awake forever, would you
take it?‟

B
Sleep is a powerful influence on all our lives, and a 60-year-old person has spent almost twenty years asleep.
The traditional theory about sleep is that our brain needs to rest for several hours to refresh itself and to „file‟
in our memory everything that has happened to us during the day. We can put off sleeping for a limited
period, but sooner or later we have to sleep. If we are not allowed to sleep, we suffer hallucinations and
eventually die.

C
According to Dr Meddis, the „tiredness‟ we feel at the end of the day is produced by a chemical mechanism
in the brain which makes us sleep. We are „programmed‟ to feel „tired‟ or „sleepy‟ at midnight, even if we
have spent the day relaxing on the beach or doing nothing. The unpleasant symptoms we suffer when we
don‟t sleep enough are not because we have not rested but because we have disobeyed our brain‟s
programming. But Dr Meddis believes that if scientists could locate and „turn off‟ the sleep mechanism in our
brain that produces tiredness, we could live completely normal and healthy lives without sleeping.

D
In spite of this, Ray Meddis, a scientist at the Sleep Research Unit at Loughborough University, has a
fascinating new theory. He suggests that we don‟t really need to sleep at all. We sleep only because our brain
is „programmed‟ to make us do so.

A
He watched many Hawaiians riding waves on large pieces of wood. When surfing started to become very
popular in the United States in the 1950s and 60s, surfers used large wooden boards that were quite heavy.
Boards today are almost always shorter and also much lighter, because they are made of artificial materials.
For anyone who wants to try surfing, the only essential things are waves and a board. There are a few other
things, however, that most surfers find important: a cord to attach one of their ankles to the board, wax, which
they put on the surface of the board to help their feet stick to it; and a wetsuit to help them keep warm in cold
water.

B
Surfing, of course, means riding on waves in the ocean using a surfboard. Many surfers stand up on their
boards but some lie down („bodyboarding‟). The history of surfing probably began with the Polynesian people
of the Pacific Islands. One of the first white people to see anyone surfing was the British explorer Captain
Cook, when his ship arrived in Hawaii in 1778.

C
The south-west of England is an example of a place where surfers usually need wetsuits, even in summer.
Surfing has been a professional sport for many years. Most of the best professional surfers in the last 30 years,
both men and women, have been American or Australian, but surfers from Brazil, Peru and South Africa have
also won important professional competitions.

D
Surfing is something people often love after trying it a few times. For many surfers it is much more than a
hobby – they would probably agree with the American professional surfer Kelly Slater when he said „Once
you‟re in, you‟re in. There‟s no getting out.‟

A
A cartoonist working for a major newspaper heard about what happened and did a cartoon about it. The owner
of a shop in New York saw the cartoon and decided to make a stuffed toy bear, which he later put in his shop
window. The new toy was immediately popular, and the name „Teddy‟ became popular.

B
Strangely, at the same time the teddy bear was also invented in Europe by people who almost certainly didn‟t
know about the Roosevelt story. A small business in Germany run by a woman called Margarete Steiff had
been producing stuffed toy animals such as dogs, cats and elephants for about twenty years. One day, her
nephew Richard suggested that the company start making bears as well. The new toy was first produced in
1902. The first bears produced by the Steiff Company had long snouts, just like real bears, while „Teddy‟s
Bear‟ in New York had a more rounded head.

C
Just over a hundred years after it was invented, the teddy bear is possibly still the world‟s most popular toy for
small children. No doubt many people reading this will remember having a teddy bear when they were very
small – in fact some have probably kept that bear. It isn‟t only children who acquire teddy bears, of course;
they are also a popular present on St Valentine‟s Day.

D
The most common story about the invention of the teddy bear involves Theodore Roosevelt, who was
president of the United States in the early years of the twentieth century and whose nickname was „Teddy‟. In
1902, the President was on a bear hunting trip when the other hunters asked if he wanted to shoot a bear that
they had tied to a tree. As he didn‟t think this was proper hunting, he refused.

Flat-sharing - the inside story

A
After a year the foreign girls went home and I decided to look for a new, preferably quieter flat! This time I
decided to share with a friend, someone I already knew well. We‟ve been living here now for nearly a year and we
get on really well – except for her irritating habits of eating my yoghurts and finishing the coffee!

B
I know all about it because I‟ve been sharing flats for the past four years, since I moved to Edinburgh to study. I
must admit my first experience was a bit of a disaster. I saw an advert in the newspaper from a girl who was
looking for a flatmate. When I met her, she seemed really nice. However, I changed my mind about her a few days
after I moved in. I found out that she was absolutely obsessive about being tidy. It was obvious that we were
incompatible, so I moved out after the first month.

C
You‟re going to go to university in a different town and you need somewhere to live. Or perhaps you just don‟t
get on with your parents. Have you ever thought of sharing a flat?

D
Then I decided to try sharing a house with several people. I rented a room in a big old house which I shared with
four other girls. It was great because the house was always full of young people from all over the world and we
had a lot of parties. However, there were three problems. Firstly, it was almost impossible to do any work.
Secondly, there was only one bathroom. And thirdly, the biggest arguments we had were always the day the phone
bill arrived!

TASK B : Circle T for True and F for False

Music News
So what’s new with ‘Moonshine’?

A
On this CD, Moonshine show they can produce perfect music in a variety of styles, from the slow ones we are
familiar with to the ones that will keep your feet tapping. However, I felt that they put their best songs at the
beginning and the last few tracks were not of quite the same quality. Despite this, „Here Again‟ will be a big hit
and bring more success to this band.

B
It is clear from the first song on the CD – which is a dance tune – that the band is no longer going to concentrate on
slow songs. The second tune is also a dance tune and is even louder and heavier. These two tracks will certainly
come as a surprise to many fans. Either of them could easily become a hit single though, because they are
excellent.

C
Singer Rob Letchford gets a chance to really show how good he is, reaching each note perfectly. Fans should be
grateful he recorded the songs for the album before he had trouble with his throat. This has resulted in the band
having to cancel their next tour. (Anyone who has bought tickets need not worry as all the concerts will be
rearranged as soon as Rob has recovered.)

D
The band Moonshine released their third CD last week. „Here Again‟ is a follow-up to „The Waves‟. There have
been a few changes since the last CD, with Tom Wilcott on bass guitar replacing Simon Mc Vee, who left the band
last year, and the arrival of Tom Simpson on drums.

Tattoo Art

A
More and more young people are getting tattoos in North America in spite of the pain they may have
to feel to get one. This responds to various reasons.

B
To begin with, the desire to be part of a group, to be accepted by one's friends, can have a great
influence on what a person does. Unless they are very self-confident and have a very strong
personality, when a person's friends are all getting tattoos, that person will probably get one too, just
to form part of the group.

C
The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. Tattoos can be
seen on people appearing in commercials selling expensive cars. Famous sports heroes with tattoos
are shown in magazines. So are fashion models. These media images link tattoos to ideas of wealth,
success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a tattoo for its fashion and status value.

D
However, it is not always the influence of other people or the media that results in a person getting a
tattoo. Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their beliefs, or
their feelings – in other words, to show their individuality. A musician in a rock band may get a tattoo
of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of endangered animals on their
shoulders. Lovers may tattoo each others' names over their hearts. A tattoo can be a public sign to
show what is important in a person's life.

TASK A: Match the headings to the paragraphs

Being trendy C

1 A sense of inclusion

2 A sense of identity

3 Why so popular

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

CHEAT!
Recently a study in the USA has shown that 75% of high school students have cheated in tests and
exams. If we include copying homework, the number is 90%. Many students don‟t even realise that this
is wrong. They think cheating is OK now because it is common.

A
In the past, weaker students cheated, but now cheaters are often clever students who need higher grades.
There is a lot of competition today. One high school student says, „There‟s big pressure to get into a
good university. You have to get good grades, and to get good grades some people think they need to
cheat.‟

B
In the American study, 50% of the students agreed with the opinion „People sometimes have to lie and
cheat to succeed.‟ It seems that cheating has become normal for some people. But it isn‟t only at school
that people cheat. We see more and more cheaters in sport and in business. Unfortunately, adults don‟t
always set good examples.

C
New technology makes cheating a lot easier. There are websites where you can download exams and
essays. There are people online who write essays for you. Students are instantly messaging homework
answers and they can send text messages to friends in exams or put answers into their mp4 players.
Some students take photographs of tests and then email them to friends. So what‟s the solution?

D
Teachers can prohibit cell phones and cameras, and use special software to detect copying in homework.
Principals can even suspend or expel cheaters. But it is better for people to know that they don‟t have to
cheat to be successful – cheaters never win and true winners never cheat.

TASK A: Match the headings to the paragraphs

How are they cheating? C

1 Who‟s the real winner?

2 The culture of cheating

3 Why cheating?

TASK B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

Recycled style: A fashion show with a difference

People from all over the world come to London Fashion Week. This year, one fashion show at the
Science Museum is different. Models walk down the catwalk to loud music and photographers take
hundreds of pictures. But that happens in every show, so what‟s different? The answer is, of course,
CLOTHES.

A
All the models are wearing clothes made from reused materials which usually end up in our rubbish
bins. For example, one model has on a hat and jewellery made from old CDs, another, a jacket made
from firemen‟s old trousers and another, a pair of shoes created from car seats.

B
The show is from five eco-designers, who all have new collections. They want to make new clothes
without creating waste. Therefore, they recycle, reuse and recreate.

C
The designers are all worried about the impact of clothes on the environment. „We are witnessing a
culture where people are buying clothes, then throwing them away,‟ says one of the designers. „If we
really care about our life quality on this planet, we need to recycle much more. And do so NOW! We
need to make sure everybody protects the environment.‟

D
Every day in the UK, two billion kilograms of clothes are thrown away, clothes which come from cheap
fashion shops, with the consequent increase of rubbish. If every one of us managed to reduce this
amount considerably, how much good would we be doing ourselves and our planet!

TASK A: Match the headings to the paragraphs

Does the Perfect City Exist?

A
Where do you think the world‟s most fashionable place would be? Dubai? Thailand, maybe? Well, think
again! In a recent survey of over 1,000 young people, it wasn‟t the exotic and tropical place that finished at
the top of the list, but Reykjavik, in Iceland, is now the place where young people would most like to go.

B
The city, which is one of Europe‟s smallest capitals, with a population of just 120,000, offers an amazing
variety of entertainment, from superb restaurants and cafés to cinemas where you can watch the latest
Icelandic and international films. In addition, you can get to know the incredible night culture there. Besides,
you can try an amazing variety of cold drinks created in Iceland.

C
However, if you prefer doing activities in the fresh air you can take a bus out of the city and within an hour‟s
ride, you‟ll find horse riding, fishing and mountain-biking. You can even board one of the many tourist boats
and spend a day whale-watching. Finally, you can relax in one of the most amazing hot springs in the world.
They are like jacuzzis!

D
This city has a reputation for friendliness that is well-deserved. When you go through passport control at the
airport, the officials will probably share a joke with you instead of giving you serious looks or asking you
difficult questions. Most people take planes from Europe but you can get there from the USA, Canada and
even Japan! So, what are you waiting for? Put on your seat belt and take off for Reykjavik!

Task A: Match the headings to the paragraphs. One has already been done.

Task B: Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.
