5GSH1000
Cover Sheet for Process Industry Practices
INIH1000, INSH1000, and INSH2000
Materials and Installation of Hot Service Insulation

1. The following Process Industry Practices (PIPs) are accepted as Shell General Specification (GS)
5GSH1000 with modifications as indicated below:
• INIH1000 Hot Insulation Installation Details
• INSH1000 Requirements for Hot Service Insulation Materials
• INSH2000 Installation of Hot Service Insulation Systems
2. Above PIPs are generic and require decisions regarding insulation materials and design thickness.
Decisions have been made for major projects to optimize cost and performance. Thickness
tables and data sheets for use on new construction projects are attached to this cover sheet.
3. The purpose of 5GSH1000 is to combine all the Shell hot service materials and installation
requirements into one documentation package.
4. 5GSH1000 partially replaces existing Shell General Specification 5 GS-1.
5. Insulation thickness tables and type codes, formerly in 5 GS-1, are found in 5GSEG1000.
6. Refer to 5GS1001 for installation of insulation for strong wind conditions.
7. Refer to 5GS1002 for fire protection of insulation.
8. Refer to 5GS1003 for insulation for ethylene oxide equipment.
9. Refer to 5GS1004 acoustical insulation for piping.

5. Application of Insulation

Add:

5.13 Mechanical Equipment Insulation

1. Unless otherwise specified, flanges, bearing houses, threaded connections and

supports of mechanical equipment shall not be insulated. Unless otherwise
specified, mechanical equipment shall not be insulated.
2. Unless otherwise specified, insulation shall be removable, flexible insulation
covers.
3. Insulation that is not removable shall have the following characteristics:
a. Shall consist of insulating cement, applied in 3/4" to 1" thick layers to the
required thickness.
b. Shall be reinforced at mid depth with wire mesh or with pieces of insulation
firmly wired in place.
c. All voids shall be filled with insulating cement to provide a smooth surface.
4. The final finish over the insulating cement shall be hex mesh and a 3/16 to 1/4"
skim coat of insulation and finishing cement followed by fabric reinforced mastic
applied after the insulating and finishing cement has thoroughly dried.
5. Permanent insulation for electric traced mechanical equipment shall have the
following characteristics:
a. Insulation shall be semi-rigid mineral fiber.
b. Insulation shall be fitted snugly in place.
c. Insulation shall be weatherproofed with a wire mesh reinforced built up
mastic coating.

5.14 Process Area Tank Insulation

1. Insulation for tanks with a diameter less than 25' shall be the same as insulation
for vessels.
2. Insulation for tanks with a diameter greater than 25' shall be a prefabricated panel
system. Proposed panel system shall be submitted to Shell for review and
approval.
3. Bottom shell insulation shall be cellular glass for a minimum of 12", or greater as
required by local conditions.

4. A heavy fillet of silicone caulk shall be used to seal around all projections
through the jacketing.
5. Tank roof insulation shall be prefabricated panels or a built up roof system.
Proposed system shall be submitted to Shell for review and approval.
6. Top of the flashing angle shall not be penetrated for connection of fascia boards.

5.15 Instrument Insulation

1. Level bridles and associated piping shall be insulated per the adjacent insulation
requirements. Insulation shall not obstruct the sight glasses. Exceptions require
Shell approval.
2. Unless otherwise specified, insulation of instruments beyond the root valve
connection at the piping or equipment will be by others.

5.16 Inspection Port Kits

1. Ports shall be installed at the locations specified by Shell

2. Ports shall be positioned so that the inspection point is in the center of the
opening.

1. Table is based on non hygroscopic mineral wool insulation with a K factor of 0.28 at 50°F.
Typically, Owens Corning or Rockwool mineral wool insulation.
2. Insulation thickness is optimized for use with Raychem's XTV self limiting heat trace cable at
120 and 208 volts.
3. Minimum ambient temperature shall be 10°F.
4. If the insulation thickness specified in Table 1 of this GS is thicker than that specified in
this table, the thickness specified in Table 1 shall be used.
5. Heat traced equipment (other than piping) shall be insulated with 3" mineral wool.
