Tittle : Sizing Calculation For Liquid Service Control Valve Revision No. 0

1. CALCULATION OBJECTIVE
The objective of this calculation is to determine the correct size of control
valve for liquid service. Calculation methods are done according to ISA and IEC
procedures.

2. GENERAL INFORMATION
Equipment name = Control Valve
Equipment tag number = CV-201
Line number = SSG-RA-P1-8"-SS304-INS

3. PROCESS DATA
2.1 Liquid data
Liquid name = Propanol
Volumetric flowrate q = 30.000 L/h
0
Operating temperature T = 60 C
Density at temperature ρ = 764 kg/m3
Inlet pressure P_in = 450 kPa
Outlet pressure P_out = 435 kPa
Vapor pressure P_vap = 20,3 kPa
Critical pressure Pc = 5190 kPa

2.2 Valve data

Valve body type = Globe valve
Valve characteristic = Equal percentage
Valve nominal size NPS = 4 inch
Rated flow coefficient Cv_0 = 125
Pressure drop ratio Xc = 1
Liquid pressure recovery factor Fl = 1

2.3 Piping data

Upstream nominal pipe size NPS = 8 inch
Upstream pipe schedule sch = 40
Downstream nominal pipe size NPS = 8 inch
Downstream pipe schedule sch = 40

4. CALCULATION
4.1 Piping Factor Calculation
FP is a correction factor that accounts for pressure losses due to piping fittings
such as reducers, elbows, or tees that might be attached directly to the inlet and
outlet of the control valve to be sized. FLP might recalculate.

With ΣK is a summation of velocity head loss coefficients of all fittings that
attached in upstream and/or downstream of control valve, respectively :

Upstream pipe inside diameter D1 = 203 mm

Downstream pipe inside diameter D2 = 203 mm
Valve body diameter d = 100 mm
N1 constant N1 = 0,0865
N2 constant N2 = 0,00214

Resistance coefficient of upstream fittings K1 = 0,47

Resistance coefficient of downstream fittings K2 = 0,47
Inlet Bernoulli coefficient Kb_1 = 0,94
Outlet Bernoulli coefficient Kb_2 = 0,94
Total velocity head loss coefficient ΣK = 0,94
Piping factor FP = 1,03
Adjusted pressure recovery factor F_LP = 0,79

4.2 Determine Sizing Pressure Drop

In order to sizing adequate control valve, the lowest pressure drop should be
selected. If the actual pressure drop across the valve (ΔP)is higher than choked
pressure drop flow (ΔPchocked), then choked pressure drop must be selected.
Otherwise, higher pressure drop will causes cavitation and flashing that will

Liquid critical pressure ratio Ff = 0,94

Actual pressure drop ΔP = 15,0 kPa
Chocked flow pressure drop ΔP_ckd = 253,6 kPa

Selected sizing pressure drop = Actual ΔP

Sizing pressure drop = 15,0 kPa

4.3 Calculation of Required Flow Coefficient

Flow coefficient (CV) are calculating with following equation :

𝑞
𝐶𝑉 =
Δ𝑃𝑠𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔
𝑁1 𝐹𝑃
𝑆𝐺
Liquid specific gravity SG = 0,76
Required flow coefficient Cv = 75,7

5. RESULT
The required CV above are evaluated with rated CV that initially selected. If
required CV exceeds assumed valve, it shall recommended to increase one nominal
size. Altough next larger size gives correct result, it is may not always true.
Engineer need to evaluate flashed flow into consideration. Calculation need to be

Rated flow coefficient Cv_0 = 125

Required flow coefficient Cv = 75,7
Status
Valve are sized properly, current type and dimension are selected

Selected valve size NPS =4 inch

Selected valve type Globe valve
Selected valve characteristic Equal percentage
Selected flow coefficient Cv_0 = 125
Final required flow coefficient Cv = 77,3
Result = Satisfied
