Tips:
➔ Look into New Europe tours (free walking tours of cities that show you what to do/where
to go in a short time)
➔ Look for hostels that advertise “For Backpackers” or “Run by Backpackers”. Once
you've found a hostel book it directly with the hostel! Hostel booking sites skim 20% of
profits which the hostel could have used to make you happier and their staff happier. If
the hostel doesn't have online booking off their website just shoot them an email and say
you'll be there tomorrow with cash. Ask if they can give a small discount. They'll
probably be happy to do so.
➔ Search Hostels by Price (Low to High) and then look for ratings above 80%, book for a
couple of days at a time to see if you like the hostel.
➔ The night before you travel to a new city load up the location of your next hostel on
Google maps. It should stay loaded up offline giving you an interactive map which is
extremely helpful.
➔ Type "okay maps" into google maps on your phone and you can use the map offline! You
can even see the GPS dot
➔ If someone looks suspicious look right at them, pickpockets look for people that aren't
paying much attention.
➔ Look into inter-city buses instead of trains! Often a much cheaper and more comfortable
form of transport between major cities, they sometimes have free wifi, and can be booked
last minute.
➔ Go to malls for free bathrooms, if you see "WC" in the street, they are almost always
paying.
➔ Make photocopies of passports and other Identification. Leave a set with someone you
trust, take a set with you that is separate from the originals, and carry your originals. If
the originals are lost or stolen, you have documentation.

Getting Around:
Tips:
ALWAYS STAY TO THE RIGHT
● Cars will keep an eye out for you but trams will not.
● Many streets have bicycle lanes. Stay in these lanes as much as possible.
● Sometimes you will share these bicycle lanes with scooters. Watch out for them when
turning.
● Most rental bikes are brightly colored; this is so the rest of us know to watch out for you.
● Be sure to follow the unwritten rules of cycling in Amsterdam
● Rent a bike at MacBike behind the Hard Rock Cafe in Vondelpark, take the free ferry
behind the train station, and ride up the coast for hours. They have bike trails that are
essentially freeways-for-cycling
Tips:
● Sometimes if a boat is already half full -- and all good seats are taken -- it's better to wait
for the next one, or use a different company.
● If you want to take good photos, look for a boat with an open area, or make sure you sit
near a window that opens.
● Bring a drink or snack yourself rather than buying something overpriced on board.
● If you see a large group of kids or a loud group of tourists, take another boat. The noise
inside can be deafening, and you'll have trouble hearing the guide (on tape).
● At the end of the ride, you have an opportunity to tip the captain. This is completely up to
you. I only do so if and when he has shown an interest. E.g. sometime they stop the taped
tour guide and provide extra details themselves.

Italy
Notes:
Language:
-Words ending with an 'i' in Italian are masculine plurals. Be aware that sometimes we use the
plural in English as a singular. Panini is plural, never order a panini. Order a panino, the singular
form. 1 panino, 2 panini. 1 cappuccino, 2 cappucci.
-'questo.' means 'this.' A lot of pizza places (usually called "Pizza Rustica" or "Pizza Taglia")
are walk-up joints, where you choose some pizza from a couple of types, they cut it into
rectangles for you, wrap it in paper, and you eat it while walking around. You should know
'questo' and 'basta' for those places. Point at the pizza you want and say 'questa' (o/a for
gender, try to keep that in mind when you can. Questa pizza, questo panino.) and they will kind
of pantomime out how much you want. When they get to the right size, say 'basta', which means
enough.
-Do your research on scheduled strikes. Google "Italy train strikes" and there's a variety of kind
people who translate the strike notices. The Frecce almost always run during strikes, but
infrequently, and it's better to be aware of what's going on.
*For Gelato, if the Gelato is piled high and covered in syrups and made to look big and beautiful,
it's really compensating for the bad flavor. Real gelato is either flat in the bowl, or covered by a
lid and you can't even see it.
Notes:
- Planning in Rome
- Colosseum - (Also, for great distance and wide-angle photos of the Colosseum, go up the road,
Via Dei Fori Imperiali a couple hundred meters, there is an upward hill you can walk, with
viewpoints over the city. From here you will have some very nice pictures of the entire
Colosseum building, which can be a bit difficult to take up close.)
-To go to St.Peters Basicila, instead of exiting and walking ¾ mile, walk out of Sistine Chapel
and there is a closed door that is sometimes guarded.
-Go to the suburb of Ostia for Ostia Antica. You will probably have an full city of ancient ruins
to yourself.
-Borhese museum: Don't climb the staircases to the second floor, the entrance is actually
beneath that.
- Go straight to the Sistine Chapel before it fills up with people (No foto, silencio) and then
double back to enjoy the rest at your own pace.
-Go to the Roman Forum before the Colosseum - the ticket is valid at both, and the line is much
shorter at the forum.

Weather - 60s - 70s, sunny

Things to do:
Notes:
-Download Rick Steves' free guide and print out his map
http://www.pompeiisites.org/allegati/pompei_ing%20Finale_150306115812.pdf
-There are two Stations at Pompeii: The first is 'POMPEI', while the second is 'POMPEI SCAVI'.
The station you want is 'POMPEII SCAVI'.
-You can purchase your tickets in the small newsagents found to the right of Sorrento station. It
currently costs 2.20€ one way.
-I will suggest that you buy return tickets here in order to save faffing about at the other end. You
will be far too hot and tired from 3 or 4 hours of walking around in the baking hot sun to stand in
more queues. When travelling back you will need to return to Pompeii Scavi station.
-Remember to validate your return tickets in the push box by the doors leading out to the
platform. If you forget and are asked to produce them invalidated to a ticket inspector then
expect to pay a fine.
-You will pick up your train from platform one to Sorrento, which is on the other side of the
platform. If there are any seats spare then try and sit on the right hand side for the return journey.
Remember to take plenty of water and sun cream.

Weather - mid 60s to 70s, a little chilly at night
Notes:
Things to do
-Go to www.lefrecce.it and look for trains from Ancona to Firenze. You will see plenty of trains.
-If you go to Florence and want to see the Uffizi, book online ahead of visiting - otherwise you'll
be in a queue for the entire day!
-Go out to a great restaurant for dinner, but don't go until later. Most Europeans eat dinner
around 9pm, and in Italy it's very common to take your time with a meal. If you go late enough,
you can spend all night unwinding after a busy day of sightseeing with a massive bowl of pasta
and a great bottle of red wine if you feel like drinking.
Grab a huge gelato from Grom and eat it while walking around the city checking out the sights
and sounds.Cross the ponte vecchio and walk up to piazzale michelangelo for a great view of the
sunset/city at night. There are usually street performers or bands playing to add to the ambiance
and there are a few cafes at the top of the hill.

Get Shuttle Bus to train station* - 12€
*The shuttle bus to the station leaves from close to main terminal entrance, about 100 yards from
the MP2 entrance at a guess. You get your rail tickey from a machine near the stop and that
covers the bus.The bus times, which are published on the Airport website, are arranged to
connect with trains. You should check the train times, which are also on the website, because the
do not operate on a regular timetable and there are some big gaps between services at some times
of day.
