Additional Example Problems for Sections 13-1-13-4

(Kinematics of a Particle: Force and Acceleration)

Prof. Charlebois (Dr. C)

Problem #1
Given: A 10-kg block is subjected to a
force F = 500 N. A spring of stiffness
k = 500 N/m is mounted against the
block. When s = 0 m, the block is at
rest and the spring is uncompressed.
The contact surface is smooth.

Find: Draw the free-body and kinetic diagrams of the block for three different scenarios:
1) s = 0 m and F = 500 N; 2) s > 0 m and F = 500 N; and 3) s > 0 m and F = 0 N.

Problem #2

Given: The 300-kg bar B, originally at

rest, is towed over a series of
small frictionless rollers. The
motor M is drawing in the cable
at a rate of v = (0.4 t2) m/s.

Find: Force in the cable T and distance s when t = 5 s.
