An Overview of Reading-Writing Connections 11
There was no real effort to link the texts to what the students
were writing; they were too busy checking their dictionaries
to figure out what the words in the texts meant. And I was
equally busy reinforcing that kind of reading behavior by not
talking at all about the reading side of writing. Indeed, I was
still separating reading from writing, as if the two acts had to
take place at separate times under separate circumstances. I
was also still assuming that the reading side of the writing as-
signments took care of itself; my job was to teach the writing.
Thankfully, we gradually began spending more time in class
discussing the readings, in the context of what they meant
with respect to the writing the students were doing. Soon we
were talking about effective reading strategies, but not strate-
gies aimed strictly at comprehension of the texts. Instead, and
without a conscious decision on my part to do so, we some-
how were looking more and more at reading as it related to
writing. What we were doing, in essence, was what Tierney
and Pearson described in the quote at the beginning of this
chapter: we were talking about reading as an act of compos-
ing (though we didn’t use that term at the time). As we talked
about the students’ writing summaries of the assigned read-
ings, for example, we began looking more carefully at how
they could use the same rhetorical structures encountered in
their reading of the assigned texts in their writing. And that
led us to looking at how they could use their knowledge of
conventions of writing to make better sense of their reading

An Overview of Reading-Writing Connections 21
• Cognitive perspectives
• Social perspectives
[From the early 1980s to the early 1990s] ESL writing class-
rooms have changed dramatically, focusing on writing as a
communicative act and emphasizing students’ writing
processes and communicative intentions. Along with this
change has come recognition of the extent to which read-
ing can be, and in academic settings nearly always is, the
basis for writing. Recent research has also called into ques-
tion the traditional narrow view of the function of reading
in the teaching of writing. (p. 1)

in texts being read and use input from reading to shape what
is being written.
With respect to historical conditions, then, we see that in-
terest in L2 reading-writing connections is a fairly recent de-
velopment and that it has occurred at least in part as notions
of language learning and teaching have changed from a struc-
tural to a communicative orientation. And, as we saw earlier,
several domains of research have emerged as particularly im-
portant sources of insight into relationships between reading
and writing in second language contexts.

L2, writing and reading are assumed to occur apart from each
other (“First I’ll do my reading for the assignment, and later
I’ll write my essay”), so that what each skill can contribute to
the other is not recognized. Then there is the likelihood that
when students encounter problems in one domain, they may
fail to understand that the genesis of the problems may rest in
the other skill—for example, that problems in writing may ac-
tually start in problems with reading. If students’ acquisition
of meaningful, effective academic literacy is our goal as L2
writing teachers, we must conduct our classes as places where
the two anchors of literacy—reading and writing—are both
accounted for in significant ways. This presupposes that we

a model?
5. A point posited throughout this chapter (and this
book) is that reading needs to be incorporated into
the writing classroom, but what has not been made
clear is what proportion of a writing course the
reading component should occupy. What
recommendation would you make for the
proportioning of reading and writing? For example,
equal treatment of the two skills, or 75 percent
writing and 25 percent reading, or a 60-40 split? On
what basis should such a decision be made?
