Sort the Beginning sounds with the correct mat
How to play
• Children are each given an initial sound mat
• Ensure children know the sound the letter makes.
• Place all picture tiles facing down.

Aa
• One child at a time selects a tile and if the initial sound matches their mat, they
place it on the mat. If if does not match, they return it to the pile.
• This version helps children also develop visual memory skills, but it can be
made simpler by facing all pictures up instead.

Other Ideas:
• Use the sound mats and find a specific number of objects in the classroom
that begin with that sound and place them on the mat.

Lost and Found
Playdough fun

EXTEND LEARNING:

• Can you make a penguin?

• Can you tell me about your
favourite part of the story?
• What would you do if you found
a penguin?
• Have you ever been lost?
• What should you do if you ever
get lost?
Penguin pals count with me!
counting
Use the following cards to count our Penguin
friends.
See if the children can write the number, make
the tally and try writing the word. For
reference there are also ‘word tracing’
cards.

These cards can also be used with the

playdough mats. The children can make that
many playdough balls, reproduce the word or
create the number.

To extend – have children tell you what number number tally

comes before and or after, what is one more,
one less etc.

Penguin
Measuring
Using the following printables, have children
sort the penguins according to size.

Children could glue the penguins on lengths of

cardstock from smallest to biggest or biggest
to smallest.

To extend, have children use formal or

informal units of measure to record how long
each penguin is. Children could write the
number UNDER the penguins.

The colored measuring length printable can

be laminated for durability and placed in your
math center with different informal units of
measurement. Children simply write and wipe
their answers.
