Chorale and Psalm Unit: Final Assignment

In this unit, we learned about a brief history of chorales, triads in a major scale,
and the roman numerals of chords! Your final assignment for this unit is to harmonize
your own chorale.
Assignment Requirements
1. Research/Presentation Component:
You will present a 5-minute powerpoint to the class as a group. In your groups, you will
need to research the psalm that your chorale is inspired by to answer the following
questions:
1. Who wrote this psalm?
2. Provide some context about the author if applicable
3. Read some of the psalm to this class
4. Explain the context and/or meaning of the psalm. What lesson are we
learning from it?
5. Include a picture of the original melody
6. Include a picture of your score with the roman numerals for the class to
follow.

2. Instrumental Performance Component:

Your group will create a 4-part chorale from the melody you are assigned. You will need
to:
1. Perform the 4-part chorale for the class
2. Submit a PDF of your chorale’s score with a Roman numeral analysis
underneath on Edsby
3. Submit the individual part for your instrument (in the key you would have to
play it in)

Your composition must have:

1. At least two passing tones.
2. At least 1 seventh chord.
3. All 4 voices playing the entire time.

Remember: Be creative with the harmonies! The melody doesn’t always have to
be in the top voice. Try passing it around the different instruments.

Your final submission on Edsby should include: (only one per group needed)
1. Your powerpoint slides
2. A PDF of your chorale’s score

PRESENTATION/DUE DATE IS APRIL 24th, 2023
