01 Translate the following excerpt into Tamil in 30 minutes. You may use any electronic
device if necessary:
A fresh look at Kannangara Reforms
The Special Committee recommended that:
1. the medium of instruction in the primary school shall be the mother tongue;

2. English should be introduced as a language subject in all primary schools where it is

not the medium. Similarly, Sinhalese or Tamil shall be a language subject in primary
schools where English is the medium (The so-called ‘language subject’ was to be
introduced at Standard 3 or the fourth year in school);

3. the medium of instruction at the lower level of the post-primary school shall be
either the mother tongue or bilingual (one of the languages being English). English
shall be a compulsory second language where the medium is not English or
bilingual. Similarly, Sinhalese or Tamil shall be a compulsory second language
where English is the medium;

4. the medium of instruction at the higher level of the secondary or senior schools shall
be English, Sinhalese, Tamil or bilingual. English shall be a compulsory second
language where the medium is not English or bilingual. Similarly, Sinhalese or
Tamil shall be a compulsory second language where English is the medium; and

5. the higher practical course shall be given through the mother tongue or the bilingual
medium.

02 Translate the following passage into English in 30 minutes. You may use any electronic

தொலமியின் வரைபடத்தில் கொழும்பு
இலங்கை வரலாற்றில் கொழும்பு மாநகரம் நீண்ட காலமாக சிறப்பான
இடத்தைப் பெற்ற ஒரு பிரதேசமாகும்.

கி.மு மூன்றாம் நூற்றாண்டில் மகா அலெக்சாந்தர் இந்தியா வந்த

காலத்தில், இலங்கை தப்ரபேன் (Taprobane) என அழைக்கப்பட்டது.

பண்டைய கிரேக்கர்கள் இந்தியாவை ஆண்ட மௌரியப் பேரரசுடன்

தொடர்புகளைப் பேணி வந்தார்கள். இந்தியக் கடற்கரையில் தாமிரபரணி
என்கிற சமஸ்கிருதப் பெயரைக் கொண்ட பெரிய தீவு இருப்பதை அவர்கள்
அறிந்திருந்தார்கள். தாமிரபரணியை அவர்கள் தப்ரபேன் என்று
உச்சரித்தார்கள். விஜயன் தாமிரபரணியில் வந்திறங்கிய வரலாற்றுக்
குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன.

வரைபடத்தை வரைந்தவர் அவர் தான். இந்த வரைபடத்தின் பின்னர்
தப்ரபேன் என்கிற பெயர் பிரபலமடைந்தது. இந்த வரைபடத்தை அவர்
வரைந்த காலத்தை அறிந்தால் நாம் வியப்புறுவோம். கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு முன்
