ABSTRACT
This study provides a comparison of suitable drivetrain configurations for the Polytechnic Muadzam
Shah (PMS) racing team Formula Motorsports Education Competition (FMEC) electric vehicle (EV)
racing car. The investigation aims to identify the best drivetrain configuration according to the required
power and the transmissible electric motor torque to the driven tyre. The study focuses on an electric
motor combined with continuous variable transmission (CVT) and an electric motor chain drive system.
To find out the best drivetrain system configuration in FMEC EV racing car is adopted on the testing
process on the road surface and on the dyno roller machine that defines the electric motor rpm and
powertrain transmission ratio in order to improve vehicle travel range and performance. The vehicle
power supply is divided between the driver controller and electric motor from lithium iron phosphate
(LiFEPO4) batteries with a battery management system (BMS). After the testing process, the potential
of each drivetrain configuration is indicated according to its response to the vehicle's speed, and hence
the best drivetrain configuration is determined.

Keywords: electric vehicle, continuous variable transmission, chain drive, travel range, speed.
