FINNED HEAT SINK

AIM: To design and implement finned heat sink to maintain temperature using the Ansys-
Icepack software.

PROCEDURE:
• Open Ansys-Icepak
• Build the model, create the cabinet of specified dimension.
• Now create the backing plate by selecting block button of specified coordinates.
• Create the fan(2D) of given dimension and specify coordinates.
• For more than one fan select copy fan and give the offset dimension.
• Create the heat source and give the thermal specification like power generated etc.
• Create fins of specified dimensions, specify the coordinates, and specify the
thermal properties.
• Copy the fins and give the offset dimensions to get more than one fins.
• Check the model.
• Click on generate mesh.
• Give mesh parameters as coarse.
• Click on display mesh, check the mesh.
• Click on basic settings click reset button to know Reynolds and peclet number.
• Click on problem setup wizard.
• Set the flow regime to turbulent, ignore heat transfer, choose zero equation, steady state.
• Ignore radiation, save the model.
• Click on start solution.
• Examine the results by various post processing techniques.
• Select the contours and plane cut the desired view and select temperature.
• Select the velocity vector option to see the flow inside cabin.
• Select the object face option to check the temperature on the backing plate.
• Examine the results, if the temperature is maintained below 65oC, then change the values
accordingly.
• Save the model.
• Exit Ansys-Icepak
Direct contact with cooling fluid:

Direct contact with cooling fluid typically refers to a method used in various cooling systems,
such as heat exchangers or cooling towers, where a heated substance comes into direct contact
with a coolant fluid to transfer heat efficiently. In this process, the heated substance, such as hot
gas or liquid, is brought into direct contact with the coolant fluid, usually water or another suitable
liquid. The heat from the heated substance is transferred to the coolant fluid through conduction,
resulting in the cooling of the heated substance. This direct contact allows for rapid heat transfer
and efficient cooling. Direct contact cooling is often employed in applications where rapid cooling
is required or where traditional methods of indirect cooling are not feasible or efficient enough.

Indirect contact with cooling fluid:

Indirect contact cooling for electronics involves using a heat exchanger to transfer heat from
electronic components to a coolant fluid without direct contact. Electronic heat is transferred to the
heat exchanger, which then transfers it to the fluid circulating through a separate loop. This heated
fluid is then cooled externally before being recirculated. This method ensures safety, as it prevents
the electronic components from being directly exposed to the coolant fluid, reducing the risk of
damage from leaks or electrical conductivity issues. It also offers versatility, as various coolant
fluids such as water, refrigerants, or specialized dielectric fluids can be used depending on specific
cooling requirements. Indirect contact cooling systems are efficient, achieving effective heat
transfer while maintaining a clean and controlled environment around the electronic components.
Additionally, the separation of components from the coolant fluid simplifies maintenance and
servicing, as components can be accessed without draining or disturbing the coolant loop. Overall,
indirect contact cooling with a coolant fluid provides an effective and flexible solution for
managing heat in electronics systems, offering both safety and performance benefits.
