CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods used in the conduct of the study. It includes research design,
research environment, respondents and sampling procedure, data collection procedures, research
instrument and statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will employ a descriptive research design to investigate the relationship between the
utilization of instructional materials and the academic performance of selected Grade 9 students at St.
Peter's College. This design is deemed appropriate for the study since it aims to determine and describe
the effectiveness of instructional materials in enhancing pedagogy and improving students' academic
performance.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

This study will be conducted in St. Peter's College. It fosters a dynamic campus life, actively encouraging
students to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations. These
include opportunities in student government, sports teams, cultural events, and community service
projects, all aimed at fostering personal and social development among the student body.

RESEARCH AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES

The respondents of this study are Grade 9 students officially enrolled in St. Peter's College for the school
year 2023 - 2024. Samples were selected using a purposive sampling procedure, enabling the
researchers to choose respondents based on the predetermined criterion of their involvement with
instructional materials and academic performance.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT AND ITS VALIDITY

Given the study's focus on understanding the impact of instructional materials on Grade 9 students'
academic performance, the researchers chose to employ a survey questionnaire created by them. The
questionnaire comprises both closed-ended and open-ended questions designed to gather insights into
the influence of instructional materials. To ensure the appropriateness, accuracy, and validity of the
survey instrument, the researchers incorporated indicators from previous studies and had the
questionnaire reviewed by their research teacher.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

For this research, a survey questionnaire was utilized as the primary data collection tool. The
questionnaire consists of structured questions to guide both the researchers and respondents. Due to
the sensitive nature of the study regarding instructional materials and academic performance,
respondents were assured of privacy when answering the questions. The questionnaire underwent
scrutiny by the research teacher for revisions and was granted approval once deemed appropriate.
Subsequently, a formal letter requesting permission to conduct the study was submitted to the assigned
teacher. Upon receiving approval, the researchers proceeded to administer the survey questionnaire.
Following data collection, the researchers retrieved the completed questionnaires and tabulated the
responses. The gathered data were then analyzed for discussions and interpretations.
