PREFACE

This course is multidisciplinary which combines theories and perspectives from various
disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, political science, biology, sociology, public
administration, arts, and information technology. It aims to help you develop an awareness of
your surroundings; the desire to establish good and more meaningful relations with others; and
the ability to make appropriate choices, preferences, and decisions through creative, intuitive,
and critical thinking.

This set of modules provides opportunities for you to discover patterns and extract
meaning from emerging trends. The first topic deals with trends and networks and their impact
on people, communities, and societies as well as on the environment. You will learn that human
beings and the environment are closely interrelated with each other and that individual actions
have a bearing on the surroundings including the planetary network as exemplified by the
problem of climate change.

Furthermore, it talks about creating a better world through democratic interventions and
prudent use of technological inventions. It emphasizes that technology should serve rather than
enslave the human being who is its creator. It takes closer look at the sure of all ideas, actions,
and innovation by illustrating the various ways in which the person’s mind shapes social
relations.
