Department of Mathematics (I.I.T. Roorkee)

Autumn Semester: 2020-21 Due Date: 2.09.21

.

1. (a) Let f be increasing on [a, b] and let D = {x1 , x2 , ...} denote the set of discon-
tinuities of f in the interior of (a, b). Show that the infinite series

Σ∞
k=1 |f (xk +) − f (xk −)|

converges and has a sum not exceeding f (b) − f (a).

(b) Define a function Jf , called the jump function of f , as follows: Jf (a) = 0, and
if a < x ≤ b, then

Jf (x) = f (a+) − f (a) + Σxk <x [f (xk +) − f (xk −)] + f (x) − f (x−),

where the sum is taken over those points xk in D∩(a, x). It is obvious that Jf
is increasing function (???) on [a, b]. Derive the following further properties: (i)
Jf (y) − Jf (x) ≤ f (y) − f (x), if a ≤ x < y ≤ b.
(ii) Jf (x+) − Jf (x) = f (x+) − f (x) and Jf (x−) − Jf (x) = f (x−) − f (x)
(iii) f (x) = Jf (x) + g(x), where g is increasing and continuous function on [a, b].

2. Determine whether or not the following functions f are of bounded variation on

[0, 1]. (a) f (x) = x2 sin(1/x) if x 6= 0, f (0) = 0. (b) f (x) = xsin(1/x) if
x 6= 0, f (0) = 0.

3. A function f , defined on [a, b], is said to satisfy a uniform Lipschitz condition of

order α > 0 on [a, b] if there exists a constant M > 0 such that |f (x) − f (y)| <
M |x−y|α for all x 6= y, and x as well as y in [a, b]. (a) If f is such a function, show
that α > 1 implies f is constant on [a, b], whereas α = 1 implies f is of bounded
variation on [a, b].

4. Show that a polynomial f is of bounded variation on every finte interval[a,b].

Describe method for finding the total variation of f on [a,b] if the zeroes of the
derivative f 0 on [a,b] are known.
