David lived in the palace of King Saul and played music to soothe the king. David became friends with Saul's son Jonathan and was also a successful soldier, winning more battles than Saul and gaining popularity. This made Saul jealous and afraid David would become king instead of him. Saul's jealousy grew so much that he threw his spear at David and tried to kill him, forcing David to flee and go into hiding with the help of his friend Jonathan.

1 David lived in the palace
with Saul the king. He played music and he would sing praises to God.
2 Jonathan, king Saul’s
son, became David’s best friend. They worked, prayed, and had fun. They worshipped God in all they did.
3 David was also a soldier
for King Saul and was very successful in battle. He had more victories than Saul and became a popular hero with the people. 4 One day after battle, the people sang, “Saul has killed his thousands, but David has killed his tens of thousands.” Saul became very angry and jealous. He was afraid the people would make David their king.
5 Saul was so jealous and
angry he wanted David dead. When David began to sing for Saul, the king picked up his spear and flung it at David. It missed and David fled. With help from Jonathan, David ran away and went into hiding.
