1) All organisms are made of cells.

Introduction
2) The cell is the most basic unit of life.

Cell - A cell is the most basic (Fundamental) structural and functional unit Further Expanded by Virchow
of all living organisms.
Also known as the building block of life. 3) All cell arise from pre-
existing cells.
Discovery
Robert Hooke discovered cells in 1665 while
examining a thin slice of cork (comes from the
bark of a tree) under his microscope he noticed
that it was made up of small box like structures
separated from each other by a partition shaped
like a honeycomb . He called these boxes cells
(Latin word for 'a little room' .
Different Types of Cells
Significance - The very first time that someone
observed that living things appear to consist of
separate units.

In 1764 Antoine Van Leeuwenhoek(Dutch

scientist) Observed a living cell (unicellular
organism) under a microscope . He discovered
that cells are moving freely and also observed
some minute components in the cell.

In 1831 Robert Brown Discovered the nucleus in

the cell.

In 1839 Purkinje first coined the term

'protoplasm' for the fluid substance of the cell.
