> Aims of Entertainment Speech
An entertainment speech aims to share
goodwill, joy and pleasure to the audience.
The purpose of an entertainment speech is
not to educate, inform, or inspire because
the primary goal is to make the audience
relax, enjoy and even laugh.
Four Key consideration
1. Be prepared
you should organized your thoughts and think through the speech before you
stand up and speak out.
Example:
1. If the situation is impromptu, you can jot some basic notes on a napkin to
keep you guided on the flow of your speech.
2. Be adaptive to the occasion
remember that being a competent speaker is about being both personally effective
and socially appropriate. Different occasions will call for different levels of social
appropriateness.
Example:
1. If you are asked to deliver a speech commemorating the first anniversary of a
school shooting, then you must avoid using humor and telling jokes because it is
inappropriate to the occasion.
Four Key consideration
3. Be adaptive to your audience
Different audiences will respond differently to speech material, so the more you
know about your audience the more likely you’ll succeed in your speech.
Example:
1. If you are asked to deliver a speech in a wedding, then consider ways to find
common ground with the audience in order to gain their attention.
"Um-hum! And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain't you got nobody
home to tell you to wash your face?"
"Then it will get washed this evening," said the large woman starting up the street, dragging the frightened
boy behind her.
And with those simple lines, Hughes affects a magical transformation turning a tough old black woman
into everyone's mother and a young hoodlum into everyone's friend, brother or son.
