    Coffee originated in Ethiopia and Yemen in the 15th century and spread from there. It was used for prayer concentration in Mecca in the 15th century and became halal in the Ottoman Empire. Coffee came to Italy in the mid-16th century via Mediterranean trade routes and spread to the rest of Europe from the Ottoman Empire, being introduced to coffee houses in Germany and Holland. The first coffee shop in London, England opened in the 17th century. Coffee houses were popular places for philosophical and political discussion. Brazil became the largest coffee producer in the 1850s and has held that position since.
