THE IMPORTANT OF GADGETS & ADDICTION TO SOCIAL MEDIA

CHAPTER 1
Introduction

Chapter one consists of five parts: (1) Background of the study, (2) Objectives of the study, (3)
Significance of the study, (4) Scope and Delimitation of the study, (5) Definition of Terms.
Part one, Background of the study, includes conducted researches about the Important of
gadgets and addiction to Social Media.

Part two, Objective of the study, states the aims to be achieved by the researches.
Part three, Significance of the study, brings out the value of the study; the relevance of the
results: for whom the results was relevant; how was the research add knowledge/ practice to
those who are involved; and how was useful for policy makers.

Part four, the Scope and Delimitation of the study, explains the scope and extent of the study.
And the last part, Definition of Terms, gives the operational meanings of the important terms
used in the study for purpose of clarify and understanding

Background of the Study


A Gadgets according to Oxford living Dictionaries online is a small mechanical or electronic
device or tool. Basically gadgets are simplified devices that make work easy. With less effort we
can now do many things with just a click of a button. Nowadays, we use gadgets in our daily lives.
We have grown so used to it that it becomes very difficult to live without it. We cannot deny the
fact that gadgets make us live comfortably; a gadgets can also bring joy and entertainment to the
family; especially to the younger generation. Gadgets such as tablets, Smartphones, Nintendo,
Xbox, Wii, and etc. Are very popular to teens and even to adults. Staying away from friends and
family is no longer difficult with the use of web-cam and other types of videos calling accessories.
Unlike before, it would take days for a message to be received but messages nowadays are
instant and spontaneous, thus communication is easier and within reach.
Social media, like many other things in life’s, is constantly changing and involving to offer
every user a better experience. There have recently become many more means of
communication, and many more young people have access to them. Moreover, people walk
through this world with their hands rather than their mouths, tapping keyboards and touchpad
to the rhythm of their thoughts. This is the way people communicate in 21st Century.
In the decade, advance in information technologies have substantially altered, the way
humans interact. Between email, texting social networking, instant messaging and skype, people
now have the resources that would make it possible to spend days or month without coming face
to face with another person yet still remain connected, with the world. From 1995 to the
present, the number of internet user world has risen form 16 million as of March 2012, which is
32.7 percent of the world’s total population (Internet World Stats 2012).Today 77 percent of
young people have a cellphone, of these teens only 39 percent made phone calls daily, where as
63 percent text messaged daily as pointed out by dokoupil (2022). Use of these new methods of
communication, as traditional voice based methods have diminished, had reduced
communication to as few textual characters as possible.
The digital Report revealed that Filipinos spent an average of 4 hours and 17 minutes per day
on social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter. The date were based on active
monthly user data form social media companies as recent as January 2017. The Philippines is
followed by Brazil (3 hours and 43 minutes) and Argentina (3 hours and 32 minutes). Moreover,
the United States, where of these social media players were founded, is among the bottom half
at an average of 2 hours and 6 seconds per day. The least active are the Japanese who logged on
to social media an average of 40 minutes per day (Delavin, 2017).
Considering the recent growth and impact of social media on the academe and the lives of the
students, the researchers decided to focus on the effects of prolonged use of internet gadgets of
children because excessive use of gadgets can have negative effects to an individual. A lot of viral
news in social media has included this type of situation where in children suffer from scizures due
to excessive gadget use.
The research will explore more about the positive and the negative effects of excessive use of
gadgets especially in Junior High students of Bitadton National High School probably because
they do not know how to limit themselves in using gadgets and mostly parents do not restrict
their child in doing so. With such concern, this study was conceptualized.
This study population covered 90% or 110 students of Grade-10 admitted that they are
addicted to social media including 1 school head, and 3 school teacher in grade 10 here in
Bitadton National High School during school year 2023-2024.

Objectives of the Study


The main aim of this study was investigate whether demographic factors (including age and
gender), impulsivity self-esteem, emotions, and attentional bias were risk factors associated with
Social Media Addiction.

1. To introduce to the readers the relevance of the topic in the present society.
2. To distinguish positive and negative effects on the use of electronic gadgets.
3. To present instances of events where in the over exposure to these gadgets post some
risks to Junior High School Student.
4. To determine the safety measures and to eliminate treats.

Significance of the Study

• The results of the study will greatly have benefitted the following:
• Future Research: the data of this study may help the future research because it will serve
as guide and reference undertaking similar study.
• Students: this study may help the students to understand and marks as a caution about
the effects of over-usage of gadgets on their health.
• Parents: the result of the study may provide a knowledge to the parents regarding the
negative outcome of having a long period of time in using a gadgets.
• Teachers/ Professors: similar to the benefits of parents, teachers will know the result of
being addicted to the gadgets that also can be used to give advice on their students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

• Scope:
• The scope of this research study will only be focusing on the addiction to the Social Media
and important of gadgets to the person which interviewed.
• Limitations:
• This research will not be going to touch about the status of the interviewed person.
• This study will not be going to collect the personal information such as Name, Address,
Contact Info’s and Parents Name of the interviewed person.

Definition of Terms

Effects- this pertains to the things that affect or impact the use of Internet Gadgets among
students.
•A change that results when something is done or happens : an event, condition, or state of
affairs that is produced by a cause.
Frequency of use- this refers to the number of times a student utilizes internet gadgets in daily
basis.
•Frequency of use means the rate of use by the individual as documented by the number of
times per day, week, or month, as appropriate, a supply is used by the individual.
Prolonged- this pertains to the amount of time used by continuing to use internet gadgets
longer than usual.
•Continuing for a notably long time.
Internet Gadgets- Refers to the technology use as medium for communication or for playing
games with the use of Computers or Smart Phone.
•The Internet, sometimes called simply “the Net,” is a worldwide system of computer
networks.
Rising generation-refers to the millennials or young student who will soon to be adult.
•A body of living beings constituting a single step in the line of descent from an ancestor.
Social Media-This refers to a series of websites and applications designed to allow people to
share content quickly, efficiently and in real-time.
•Social media is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on communication,
community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. People use social media
to stay in touch and interact with friends, family and various communities.
